From what I've heard the landscape of West Virginia is absolutely stunning tbf. Most of Appalachia is, mind.

Alabama, not so much. I'd also not describe West Virginia as feudal in the same way as the plantation society that Albama produced; more absolutely blasted post-industrial dystopia.

Seriously tho - if you're ever in the states let me know. I live very close. I'll take you there. It can actually be a fun trip if you're into the outdoors at all.

It is beautiful, especially the shenandoah valley area. But the poverty is crushing.

I also recommend the book Hilbily Elegy btw. Gives you some idea of what it's like.

It's a different sort of poverty though. It's the poverty of a place which you can tell was once prosperous and - if not rich - then at least dynamic and thriving and has just been totally gutted.

Central and southern Albama have clearly never, ever been prosperous.

It's funny how small government advocates are happy with the state governments wasting millions of dollars defending the inevitable lawsuits that will arise from women being denied a constitutional right.

The lawmakers know that these laws will be invalidated by judges and they will have to spend millions to take it to the Supreme Court (which is their goal).

Sure, but who are the small government advocates he's referring to?

Has to be the vast majority of small government advocates surely? Given that there are several times more conservatives than libertarians.

Conservatives aren't small government advocates. They just want certain parts small

I am very into the outdoors, which I think is what fuels my desire to go.

The accounts I hear from people who have visited or lived there is that the population is er...somewhat...backward (particularly in relation to their attitude to people who are non-white/christian/native speakers of English.

But yeah if I make it across I will definitely get in touch. I still remember our trip to the pub in London fondly haha.

Have to say, Pete Buttigieg is the most impressive of the Dem candidates I've seen to date. Still think Biden will be the likely nominee, but Buttigieg's an outside chance if America can get over his young age, coupled with the fact he's gay. Unlike most I've heard, he actually has some substance.
