Surely McCarthyism and no doubt other historical examples also display conspiracies and controversies derived from dire identity based arguments.

It's so ridiculously disingenuous to prescribe it to just being tit for tat due to the "left" and "SJW"s doing it too.

That's certainly not what I'm suggesting. Particularly I'd never describe it as "just tit for tat". I'm just saying this shrill, disingenuous, identity based nonsense characterises the modern political landscape. The roles have just flipped.

Wasn't it Walter Jones behind freedom fries? Turned out to be a decent republican in his latter years hammering the war and his role in the decision to invade Iraq. Amash, Paul and sme Democrats were very kind when he passed.

Unsurprisingly neo con war mongering **** Bill Kristol loathed him.

It was mainly a Bob Ney (a truly despicable character) thing. Walter Jones apparently went along with it more or less just because he thought it was amusing, and said later on that he regretted it.

Also the whole WTC mosque "controversy". In fact this whole episode has been strongly reminiscent of that.

Man alive there was some enormously stupid **** that went on in the early 2000s. It's just harder to remember because it hasn't been permanently memoralised by the internet to the same degree as in the last decade or so.

Tend to think with the passage of time, same thing will happen to the Trump bullshit too. Unless some key bit of legislation is enacted that has the whiff of permanency, the Trump presidency will probably be looked at like a bad gastro weekend. Even now I see people saying "Oh yeah, he had a Muslim ban...."

Definitely totally 100% not manufactured outrage at all, nope.

"This is a sad thing that happened, thoughts and prayers" "JUST LIKE ISIS!"

There are tons of these. This is utterly, utterly deranged.

It's a bit tasteless but there's a reasonable point in there IMO, in the sense that "hey, it sucks to see sacred sites harmed, right? Maybe you could extend the same sympathy and care to some of ours too?"

The way it's put though, it comes off more like "what about meeeeeeee"

Yeah this more than anything to me. I find it cringey more than actually disrespectful or lacking a point.

Well yeah, the phrasing is off-putting but I see the point.
