If Trump been Trump can't inspire them to vote then ****ing hell. Ultimately Joe may pivot to the centre if he gets the nomination, but his policies will be much more appeasing to the left than what Trump or Pence offer. Those on the left who said,,"both as bad as each other" in 2016 surely after the last few years surely won't have the same opinion in 2020.

YEs they would. This time at least. In any case, very few people despise Biden. Even if they arent inspired by him. Theyll be inspired to vote against Trump. Unlike some of the more left wing candidates who may be despised by the blue collar workers in the Midwest - which is Biden’s strength. Liberals in California and Connecticut are irrelevant.

Think you're being pretty generous to lefties, especially considering they did the exact opposite last time when it was abundantly clear who Trump was. Hopefully they get it now. As is well known, the mid-terms mean squat.

Say what you want about the right, they know how to back their man before the fact, dissolving in a swamp of self-interest afterward. Lefties dissolve beforehand in a swamp of principle, wipe their eyes saying how did this happen then moan about unity for the next cycle. It's infuriating.

Nah midterms mean plenty. The weakness of the GOP as whole in 2008 was laid in 2006, likewise 2010 and 2014 for the Dems.

It's all about the downballot strength etc and state governments are really important, as too many progressives only realised far too late.

The biggest story of the mid terms for me anyhow was how college educated suburban voters deserted the GOP. Trump may loath them, but he can't win without getting some of those voters back, however he has doubled down on bollocks like the wall and the usual rhetoric to try to placate his die hard base. Its very naive from Trump.

i did not say this...you must be confusing me with someone else. as i mentioned earlier, you have a very optimistic outlook on the whole situation and while i hope you are proved right, the facts on the ground show otherwise...

how did obama win his two elections? a combination of his considerable charisma, white guilt, a very efficient and comprehensive ground campaign for getting out the vote and missteps from his opponents...he had to be near-perfect to win and outside of the 1st debate against romney and the pennsylvanians clinging to guns and religions comments in his first campaign which luckily didn't hurt him much, he was...

what does biden bring to the table that can inspire a generally lazy and largely uninformed electorate? unless the dems can increase turnout significantly from what we had in 2016, they don't stand a chance...and i don't see biden as the person to do that...

you know that the republicans + russian bots will run huge disinformation/smear campaigns against whoever gets the nomination (and likely through the democratic primary process as well)...trump's base of between 35 and 40% of the electorate will stand by him no matter what and will also vote enthusiastically, moderate republicans who are repulsed by him may or may not vote but they are highly unlikely to vote for a democrat (trump is still very popular among republicans and that rating will just go up as we get closer to the election, they will vote for him in the high 80s to low 90s)...now to get independents to 1. turn out and 2. vote in big numbers for the democrat, the nominee will need to be charismatic, tough (enough to withstand all the inevitable smears) and run a great gotv campaign and biden just doesn't fit the criteria...

all the gop needs is to suppress enough minority votes via "laws" + dissuade enough "on the fence" voters from even voting with negative campaigning + bring on wedge issues that trigger conservative mindsets + the bogeyman "socialism, be afraid! be very afraid!!!" message, that will be enough to suppress overall voter turnout and trump will be home free probably with gains in the two houses as well...

And smalishah's avatar is the most classy one by far Jan certainly echoes the sentiments of CW

@gimp if you love my post, you should at least read it before opining...just a suggestion...there are several other equally valid factors mentioned there that could influence the election...having said that the fact that russia meddled in the u.s election is a fact, proved beyond doubt so is the fact that they are continuing to do it and will do it in 2020 as well...you would fit right into the "generally lazy, largely uninformed" category...

Hahahah **** off mate, I am many things but sadly I cannot be lazy (would that I could) and I am definitely not uninformed either.

You’ll note I didn’t deny Russian bots existed btw.

good then we are in agreement...all i said was they were a factor, not that they were the only factor and apparently you concur...also sorry about the personal comment, couldn't resist it when i thought you were just dismissing the russian involvement out of hand but in retrospect, i guess it was a cheap shot, a lazy, uninformed remark about you...

Yes, the Democratic machine rigging the primaries and debates was a factor in the election. How awful for the public to find out about it!

I think Biden running will result in Obama’s tenure being unsympathetically re-evaluated. Plus he’s a bit creepy. It'll be a repeat of Hillary.

Unlike Hillary I think Biden would attract enough support in the right places to get over the line. But I don’t think he’s the strongest candidate.
