Student loans seems like one of those issues that will mostly play well to people who were turning up for the D candidate anyway.

Weren't the Republicans proposing a bill to raise tax liability on Ph.D. students? Not sure what came out of it. They barely make 30K a year on stipend and would have ended up paying half of that in taxes. Infuriating stuff when you consider that they cut taxes on the rich.

They removed it ... it think it was an unintended consequence that was eventually corrected.

Young people tend to have pretty poor turnout numbers in the US even though they strongly poll Democrat. It's probably not an issue that's going to swing allegiances but it might encourage some left-leaning young people to vote by giving them some more skin in the game.

A lot of it has to do with some very clever price gouging by the education industry. I'm not sure how much of that is down to government policies or reduced funding.
Andrew Yang who is running for president who obviously won't win discussed this on Rogan recently. He implied what you are saying also. Worth a listen and yeah I know we all hate youtube clips!

Yeah in terms of young voters (bearing in mind that "young" in this context means "everyone under 40", which is an awfully expansive notion of young) the game in terms of persuasion is well and truly won, they vote Dem by massive margins these days. It's the anaemic turnout which is more what Dem organisers worry about, and they know that student loans are a serious lightning rod amongst younger voters (along with climate change to an extent) that mainstream politicians have barely address.

So is this the last election that'll be seriously impacted by the Boomer vote or did we already have that one?

Yeah I've never gotten this attitude myself. People my age and younger who demand inspirational pollies but then respond to their problems with the electoral system by not voting at all with classic perfect enemy of good thinking. What kind of a response is that?
