What's missed was an interesting point made by Trump on how NK would go forward. He's stated he doesn't care what model they use. So much for being under the thumb of Bolton...It's a far cry from the usual USA mode of trying to enforce democracy on a culture that wouldn't be ready for it.

I think most of the credit should go to the real negotiators and informants behind the scenes i.e. those that are working for the state department/cia/the deep state. Which also means that the foreign policy criticism should go towards them too.
One thing in the POTUS's favour is that events came to a head for technological reasons. Once the threat becomes imminently real, shirking falls to the wayside. This could be a peaceful outcome, but imagine if NK turn the other way, it's going to be a cluster****.

Definitely seems like a positive development to me

I reckon this might just be the end of the Western tradition of using diplomacy to pressure foreign governments over domestic human rights abuses. But that hardly ever worked anyway.

It's also far too young to count as a tradition. I'd probably more think of it as a historical aberration, and this is just another step in the "return to history" so to speak.

It's probably one of his jokes, it's very hard to tell with that character.

Legend has it he was a stand-up comic back in the 80s

The paper that we should instead be looking at is today's remarkable copy of the Rodong Sinmun, which has 14 photos of Kim Jong-un's stroll last night through downtown Singapore on the front cover, and a pledge by the supreme leader to "learn from Singapore", plus effusive praise of the city-state.

Not only did they break with tradition by reporting on the dear leader's exploits overseas before his homecoming, they also decided to include in their montage pictures of Singapore's gleaming skyline, and this, my friends, is unprecedented. Showing images of rich countries is just not done in North Korea because you don't want people to realise how backward they are compared to the rest of the world. (They could get ideas, you know?)

If Kim Jong-un truly received an epiphany in Singapore -- that you can have *both* economic growth and total control -- we may well see a redux of Deng Xiaoping's "Learn from Singapore" moment in North Korea, then maybe the Trump-Kim summit would not have been in vain.

Singapore as an ideal version of NK isn't the worst path of thought Kim could take, yeah.

Is there anyone left at all who likes Bill Maher? Left-wingers hate him for a bunch of reasons too.

I think he's popular with fans of Jonathan Pie, Maajid Nawaz, Nick Cohen etc. People who mostly identify as left but don't think the left as it currently exists are doing a good job of representing 'true' left-wing values.

I don't know. All I know is that he's a smug **** who's ideas have not evolved since his edgy teenage years.

Anyway, notwithstanding that this "split California into three states" idea is advanced in utterly, utterly bad faith and is purely designed at gaming the system as much as possible, in isolation it's actually... an idea with some merit IMO
