Absolutely, it wouldn't be my preference, but has to be a better option than continuing to pick Bashir ahead of a proper bowler. If you play four quicks plus Stokes, that has to be ridiculous overkill. I also don't see how you can produce these dead flat decks which they favour to bat like it's a LO game without a spinner to do hopefully do something late in the game on a dry pitch.
It's definitely not the batting, they're both equally **** at that. Stokes watched a highlight clip of him on Twitter and thought his style of bowling will suit Australia, the high release point, overspin, height, etc. Unfortunately those physical characteristics don't outweigh the fact he doesn't turn the ball, his control of length is all over the place and he can't stick to a line. He can't get a game for his county, he shouldn't be playing for England. I get the impression they're too stubborn to change though, and you'll get to watch Australia smacking him around Perth in November.I feel sorry for Bashir in the sense he's a kid plucked form nowhere who just isn't ready, and I can't work out why he was picked ahead of Leach, for example, who isn't that great himself but has a lot more to offer. I mean, do they think Bashir bats a ton better than Leach or something? he barely took a wicket in second grade Shires here ffs.
I don't get it. It's like the spin version of Konstas - you risk ruining a potential long term option by playing them too soon instead of letting them develop at FC level and having some nous when they eventually get a game. Leach is there, and he seems perfectly serviceable, in as much as finger spinners are ever worthwhile.
