The Best Fieldsmen I Have Seen

JBMAC

Indeed, probably the best catch I've ever seen tbh.
I do recall Australian Opener,John Dyson, taking an extremely good catch at the SCG(?)...right on the boundary.. and he took it like a Soccer Goalkeeper...Very spectacular.

Good call mate - my all time favourite catch, the first true "classic" I have a vivid memory of seeing. Bruce Yardley to Sylvester Clarke, a big swipe deep toward the leg side boundary, and Dyson flings himself up, both hands in the air, hits the deck hard, and then rolls over with a pained grin on his face with the ball in his hands. A gem.

A bit of trivia - did you know that Dyson WAS in fact a former goalkeeper?

Mark Waugh, Ricky Ponting and Jonty Rhodes.

But the best catch I have ever seen was taken by one Adam Dale in a domestic one day match for Queensland in the late nineties. Anyone who saw it would surely remember how awesome it was.

I think Waugh deserves to be in the top 5 because of his versatility as much as how effortless he made it look, in his younger years he was an excellent cover/point/outfeilder, very quick across the ground very accurate throw very reliable, and as he aged he moved into the slips and was brilliant there to, best slipper Ive seen. Ponting seems to be following a similar path moving from excellent infeilder to slipper.

People like Hayden, Laxman, Taylor and Stephen Fleming do an excellent job in the slips but I dont rate them that highly as allround fieldsman due to their lack of mobility in other positions (with possible exception of Fleming).

Plenty of excellent cover/point/midwicker inner circle men going around and they seem to get the most credit for their fielding because it looks the most spectacular when they come off...I reckon Symonds is the pick of these atm tbh...edging out the likes of Collingwood, Hussey, Clarke, Afridi , Yuvraj.

And there are some very good specialist outfielders going around to, mainly fast bowlers with strong arms....Brett Lee and Mitchell Johnson have to be among the best, very athletic and reliable.

Hussey you have to be kidding!! I know he's taken a couple of screamers, but he's nothing special, he has the worst arm too.

Fleming is a pretty shoddy fielder when he's not in a catching position, first slip or short cover for example.

Mark Waugh for me was amazing, the catch he took at cover to dismiss Chris Cairns in Brisbane is close to one of the best pieces of fielding I have seen. For me purely for his hands and his judgement I'd rate him higher than Jonty, and just behind Harper.

Growing up in South Africa I can't go past Jonty, but justifiably so as everyone agrees he was one of the best. Another South African who was very solid in the field would have to be Alan Donald (just ignore my signature please) the man was one of the best outfielders in the game IMHO.

Roshan Mahanama was a great catcher, as is Sanath Jayasuria.

My list would read as follows from the players I've seen:

Roger Harper
Mark Waugh
Jonty Rhodes
Ricky Ponting
Paul Collingwood

Great list

Frank Woolley by all accounts had a wonderful pair of hands as well. And my dad tells me great things about Harvey and O'Neil.

Ah yes forgot to include Harvey, I know O'Neil had a great arm, and was chased by an USA baseball team
