South Africa won this tournament last year and the side for this year looks fairly decent a few players aside, notably the captain, vice captain and Yusuf Abdullah - whose either in the side as a token gesture to Natal cricket or South Africa’s desire for a left arm seamer for next winter has left them with not much to work with. Aside from Abdullah there is only Lonwabo Tsotsobe, Charl Willoughby (whose Kolpak) or under-19 bowler, Wayne Parnell.

Also surprised RSA have not opted for a replacement for Vaughn van Jaarsveld, unless Vincent van der Bijl has convinced him to stay with South Africa but it will be interesting to see how Morne Morkel, de Wet and du Plessis get in, all three should be at the forefront of future South African sides.

What are the aims of this tournament? as looking at that SA team I cant figure out what the vibe is as there is such a wide range of players, ages and talent.

Very strange team composition

Very strange team composition
Official line from CSA “For these young players to play at a top-class international opportunity in Australia, is perfect, to test the skill and resolve of these would be Protea players. This side is brimful of exciting talent and will be given the perfect opportunity to enhance their future prospects.

“This year we are intentionally taking a young team to fit the tournament culture and give younger players the opportunity of touring overseas for the first time,” said Vince Van der Bijl.

But Goughy, the side originally was rather different. The likes of Johan van der Wath, Charl Langeveldt, Albie Morkel, van Wyk, Con de Lange and Alfonso Thomas were all expected to take some part with the High Performance side this year (so was Arno Jacobs) but the Irish series was arranged after the High Performance squad was selected, therefore a bit of patch work has occurred in deciphering the players who might be better off in Ireland than Australia. Most of the guys from the 14 were not apart of the original 25 man CSA program.

Incidentally, South Africa in August will be having another High Performance Camp before a series of three-day matches, where the likes of Boeta Dippenaar will be expected to feature.

So from that you would assume that the players would be a) young and b) the future of SA cricket.

From that list there are certainly a number of players that shouln't be close.

Bodi and Alviro are over 25 (28 and 26 respectively) and are good Franchise players, nothing more. If they are the future of SA cricket then all I can say is "God help SA cricket"

Tsolekile is included as vc which is a mystery for me. They already have a keeper in the squad, the guy cant bat to save his life and he isnt even an automatic choice for the Cobras anymore.

Abdullah is very ordinary, is already 24 and has never taken a FC fifer.

Im not keen on the Faf selection either. Im not his biggest fan but part of that is probably due to the fact that he keeps a guy Ive played a lot of cricket with, like a lot and think is a better player, out of the Titans team

Zondeki has gone backwards and isnt a real threat at FC level anymore let alone at a higher level.

Of the 14, 8 are pretty good picks. Though I would even question the logic of taking 2 off-spinners.

Though I will conceed it is tough to pick a team like this with only 6 franchise teams and approx 40 Saffies playing in England as non-overseas players

Be interesting to see if New Zealand go with some younger players, or the older guys who aren't in the Black Caps.

I can't believe I ate the whole thing
Can't believe James Marshall is captaining New Zealand A. Has to be up there with with sending Kyle Mills in at ahead of Fleming as dumbest decisions ever made in cricket,

New Zealand A James Marshall (capt), Andre Adams, Hamish Bennett, Neil Broom, Grant Elliott, Gareth Hopkins (wk), Jamie How, Nathan McCullum, James McMillan, Warren McSkimming, Rob Nicol, Iain O'Brien, Michael Papps, Aaron Redmond, Bradley Scott. Under 19 players Corey Anderson, Trent Boult, Greg Morgan, Tim Southee, Kane Williamson.

However, sending U-19 players isn't the dumbest idea ever. Fully applaud it. Hopefully they can get some game time.

Wow, a bit of editing would be much appreciated on that second post.

Idiotic decision to appoint James Marshall as the captain, he rarely scores runs for Northern Districts and is well out of the running. I'm expecting big thing from Michael Papps and Jamie How as they try to stake a claim for the openening spot. Delighted to see so many Otago players there, seven all up.

New Zealand A's players will have more than a month of opportunities to push for places in the senior team at the Twenty20 World Championships when they embark on a training and playing tour of Australia. The squad departs on Monday for a three-week camp in Darwin before the Emerging Players Tournament in Queensland starting on July 16.

New Zealand are one of four sides taking part in the contest - the Australian Centre of Excellence, the Karnataka Association XI and the South African Emerging Players are the others - and they will play seven one-day games and two Twenty20 matches. "It will provide an opportunity for some players to prepare for the Twenty20 World Championship in South Africa in September," Ric Charlesworth, the New Zealand Cricket high performance manager, said. "But more importantly, it offers us the opportunity to view a new group of players on the periphery of the national team."

The 15-man squad, which will be led by James Marshall, will be joined at the camp by five under-19 players who are preparing for the Youth World Cup in Kuala Lumpur in February. Dave Nosworthy, the State Canterbury coach, will look after the team and be assisted by Mike Hesson and the bowling coach Vaughn Johnson.

New Zealand A James Marshall (capt), Andre Adams, Hamish Bennett, Neil Broom, Grant Elliott, Gareth Hopkins (wk), Jamie How, Nathan McCullum, James McMillan, Warren McSkimming, Rob Nicol, Iain O'Brien, Michael Papps, Aaron Redmond, Bradley Scott. Under 19 players Corey Anderson, Trent Boult, Greg Morgan, Tim Southee, Kane Williamson.

Cosgrove and Cullen head Australian Institute intake

South Australian pair Mark Cosgrove and Daniel Cullen head a squad chosen to take part in a 19-week programme with the Australian Institute of Sport, Cricket Australia said Friday.

A squad is chosen every year to train at the country's premier sporting facility and is a gauge of up and coming cricket talent in the country.

The 16-member squad will play in a tournament for emerging players in Brisbane from July 16-27 against teams from South Africa, New Zealand and a Karnataka State team from India. The programme concludes with a tour to India in August. Left-handed batsman Cosgrove, 22, has played three one-day internationals and off-spinner Cullen, 22, has played five ODIs. The squad will begin the programme on April 23 under academy head coach Tim Nielsen in Adelaide. In addition to the AIS squad, selectors have also chosen six players to attend the institute on a part-time basis. They are Ben Hilfenhaus, Shaun Marsh and Cullen Bailey along with Moises Henriques, Andrew McDonald and Luke Butterworth. "We have selected these players to benefit the short-term and long-term future of Australian cricket and believe we have an even distribution of batsmen and bowlers who are all capable of playing at the next level," chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch said in a statement. Two of last year's AIS scholars have already graduated to the senior national team, with Adam Voges selection in the 13 for the Perth Ashes Test and Ben Hilfenhaus' recent debut for Australia at one-day level.

The AIS scholarship intake for 2007 is: Michael Hill (Victoria), Peter Siddle (Victoria), Aaron Finch (Victoria), Ed Cowan (NSW), David Warner (NSW), Philip Hughes (NSW), Craig Phillipson (Queensland), Grant Sullivan (Queensland), Brendan Drew (Tasmania), Matthew Wade (Tasmania), Luke Pomersbach (Western Australia), Luke Ronchi (Western Australia), Shawn Gillies (Western Australia), Aaron Heal (Western Australia), Mark Cosgrove (South Australia) and Daniel Cullen (South Australia).

Next generation ready for battle

Luke Ronchi
©Getty Images / Cricket AustraliaAustralia’s next generation of cricket stars are finalising their preparations ahead of a 13-day, four-nation Emerging Players Tournament starting Monday 16 July at Caloundra Cricket Club on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.

The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) team, incorporating the Cricket Australia Centre of Excellence program, will be aiming to win the title for the first time. To do so they will have to play their best against representative teams from India, New Zealand and South Africa in Twenty20 and 50-over matches.

India won the inaugural Emerging Players Tournament trophy in 2005 while South Africa claimed honours in 2006 year in a thrilling last ball victory at Allan Border Field.

AIS Director, Professor Peter Fricker, said the Emerging Players Tournament has rapidly become a focal point in the Australian Institute of Sport cricket program.

“Since its introduction in 2005, the tournament has grown in profile due to the role it has played in developing international cricketers for four nations,” Professor Fricker said.

Some of the players who have experienced international cricket and competed in the Emerging Players Tournament are; Adam Voges, Ben Hilfenhaus (Australia), Jacob Oram, Shane Bond, Hamish Marshall, Mark Gillespie, Ross Taylor, Peter Fulton, Michael Papps (New Zealand), Neil McKenzie, Robin Peterson (South Africa) and Robin Uthappa (India).

The AIS team consists of many players that are already impacting heavily at first-class level in Australia. These players include Luke Pomersbach, Luke Ronchi, Brendan Drew, Craig Philipson, Aaron Heal and Ed Cowan, while Mark Cosgrove has already represented Australia in a one-day international.

AIS Head Coach, Brian McFadyen, said: “The Emerging Players Tournament provides a great opportunity to test the development of skills during our 12-week preparation phase at the Centre of Excellence.

“Many players have looked to expand their skill sets during the high-density training program and we are excited about the prospect of improvement in all of our scholarship holders. There is no doubt that they are all fitter and more advanced in all areas of their games than last year so they enter this tournament with great confidence.

“Although the development of players is the key criteria of the AIS program, we are still expecting a strong showing in this year’s tournament and aim to win the title for the first time.”

During the tournament, McFadyen’s coaching support staff will consist of Dene Hills, Troy Cooley, Mike Young and Darren Lehmann.

Should be a better bet still...but presumably Abdallah fills the Asian quota. Tsotsobe had top stats this year though.
