Cricketweb World Cup

The CricketWeb team had gelled so well that they decided to team up for the world cup.

Having dug deep into their past each managed to find a link to Zimbabwe. Some were a bit weak but the top dudes in the ICB were easily fooled.

Bluefox managed to convince them that his dead rabbit's half brother had its roots in Zimbabwe whereas Dave 'superking' Richards claimed his eligability because the apple tree in his parents house had roots going all the way there.

Others followed with more believable 'facts' like Cloete's next door neighbour knew someone from there and Dylan worked with someone called Bob from Zimbabwe.

Anyway, could the now infamous CricketWeb team bring the cup back?

First game - Namibia

Zimbabwe win the toss and opt to bat.

Jellett and Smith put on 61 runs in just over 7 overs before smith is run out on 36.

Jellett followed 9 runs later for 27 and Eclipse then went for 19. The score 88-3.

After Chapman was bowled for 5 things were not looking to good for Zimbabwe.

Things changed when Craze and Gray put on 174 runs before Craze was bowled for 113. Gray was unbeaten on 116 at the end of the inings with Tarick and Reuben both falling for 1. Cloete was 17no.

This left Namibia chasing 338 for victory - Surely an impossible task.

The wickets fell consistently. Reuben taking 3 - 52 and Cloete, Nath and Richards each taking 2.

Zimbabwe win by 71 runs and Crzae was mom. Next up England.

A close victory on a superb batting strip....

Jellett is the hero. 175 with two century stands of 131 and 120 for the first two wickets put Zimbabwe in a great position.

Poor bowling however saw England come back into the game. Kearsley, making his debut, bowled well with figures of 4-47.

It went to the last over with England needing 7 but they only managed only 1 run to give Zimbabwe a 5 runs victory.

India was next ...

A couple of changes sees Hall and Bluefox make their debuts. Chapman and Nath being rested.

Zimbabwe are put into bat on a blustery but warm day. Jellett's heroics of the previous match are not repeated and he is out for 14. Eclipse comes and goes quickly and India were gaining confidence.

A good partnership between Craze and Smith ended when Craze edged it to 1st slip. 113 -3. Both Hoy & Gray supported Smith who soon reached 133 at the end of the inings. Gray was dismissed on the penultimate ball and Zimbabwe made a respectable 236.

India started brightly but the openers Hall and Kearsley soon made their impact. Ganguly caught Gray of Kearsley for 6, Dravid bowled by Hall for 7 and then Kearsley seeing Tendulkar caught in 2nd slip.

Cloete then Mazumdar and India were 59 -4. Kambli then calmed their nerves with a solid performance to put India back in the game. Bluefox responded admirably on his debut taking 3 wickets for 35 runs and in the end Kambli was unable to hit enough to win over a solid Zimbabwe team. At the end of play they were 221 for 8 - 15 runs short.

Zimbabwe lead the group, but Australia are next.

A beautiful day for cricket and Zimbabwe win the toss. Electing to bat on what Joanthan Agnew describes as a hard dry pitch Zimbabwe were confident that Australia would have to fight.

As is becoming the normal Jellett and Smith got Zimabwe of to a good start before a lack of concentration brought Smith's innings to a halt at 44. (67 -1) Eclipse supporting Jellett then helped Zimbabwe put on another 60 before being run out for 31. The top order all continued to make useful contributions and although no one really shone a total of 260 -6 was a respectable total against such a strong team.

Australia seemed nervous as they opened their innings. Hall struck early three times and with another wicket from Kearsley, Australia were 30-4. Gilchrist and Waugh slowed things down and started to settle nicely against some fairly week spin bowling until Bluefox caught Waugh out with an absolute beauty! Reiffel came in and continued where Waugh had left of putting Australia back in the game. His support to Gilchrist was essential but his dismissal by Hall brought an end to Australia's attack.

Cloete eventually got the important wicket of Gilchrist and the tailenders were picked of by Reuben and Bluefox. Australia never looked like they would reach 260 and they didn't. All out for 233.

Another great victory and a place in the next round.

Zimbabwe were beginning to think they were invinciable.

Netherlands were next and they ought to have been no problem but perhaps a touch of complacency was seen.

Netherlands won the toss and decided to bat on a worn pitch which could only get worse.

They started slowly but managed to survive the opening spell by Hall and Kearsley.

Then Reuben started to bowl and they were skittled. He took 6 wickets for 38 runs.
Unfortunately the lack of support from his teammates meant that the tail enders notched 84 runs to give them a hope.
Their inning finished with them 231 for 8.

Zimbabwe did not get off to the best start. Both Jellett and Smith tried to be too attacking and were quickly dismissed.
Eclipse and Craze helped steer them back on track but a wild shot saw Eclpise completely miss the ball and see his middle stump fly through the air. Craze followed soon after and Zimbabwe were in tatters at 138 -5.

Cloete and Gray were dismissed quickly and although Kearsley and Reuben managed to stay in they couldn't maintain a run rate sufficient to win.

The innings finished with Zimbabwe 39 runs behind and looking rather red faced from a poor performance.

The coach had some harsh words after such a dismal performance. Pakistan were a stronger side and needed more commitment.
The openers Jellett, Smith, Eclipse and Craze were told to calm down and not be so aggresive as this was causing huge batting problems.
Cloete was dropped and Richards was brought back into the line up especially as the pitch would help the fast bowlers.

The toss was won by Zimbabwe and they decided to bat. Jellett and Smith both understood the instructions and played sensibly until they were very settled. Going along at 4 an over they then increased the aggression bringing the run rate up to 5.
With 150 on the board and still no loss Zimbabwe were looking impressive. Jellett was then beaten by an superb ball an his middle stump was broken in two.
A brilliant innings of 78 and an excellent partnership of 154.

Eclipse continued where Jellett left off. His measured approach and quick thinking punishing the loose balls saw him reach 30 at which point Hussain deceived him with the slower ball and took his off stump out the ground.

Smith by this time had made a century and continued to bat until the end. The score 260 for 2.

Pakistan needed 5.2 an over to win it was not all over yet.

Pakistan came out with fighting intentions and soon realised that the strip was difficult. Two easy wickets were taken and they were 24-2. Kearsley and Richards opening the bowling taking 1 each.
Pakistan regrouped, calmed down and began to play.
It wasn't until the spinners came on and finding the rough that Pakistan began to look rattled again. Reuben struck again and Bluefox pairing beautifully with Reuben also made his mark.
Three more quick wickets had brought Pakistan to 124 - 5.

Reuben and Bluefox both added another wicket each before they had finished their quota.

The tailenders put up no fight at all. Hall taking one wicket and Richards taking the last three in the same over wrapped up an emphatic victory.

Sri Lanka were unbeaten coming into this match and they were as confident as team could be.

Zimbabwe made no changes from the side that Pakistan and when the toss was won they decided to bat.

It started badly. Smith bowled for one in the second over. Less than 30 runs later Jellett then completely misses and is also bowled. The score 41-2.

When Craze came and never really settled it was no surprise that after making 16 he was stumped leaving Zimbabwe on 65-3.
Unfortunately Sri Lanka seemed to have put fear into every player as they came and went quickly so that Zimbabwe were bowled out for 148

Zimbabwe had a hard task to win this and some extra good bowling was going to be needed to break down a strong, enthusiastic side. Sri Lanka came out to finish off the job and settled down playing beautifully. They lost their first wicket to Hall and it wasn't until Reuben came into the attack that more wickets started to come. He once again shined taking 3-36.
Bluefox did take another wicket but it was to no avail. Sri Lanka only needed to score at 3 an over and they reached their target in 24 overs.

Zimbabwe were outclassed but the side that is surely the favorites to win. A disappointment but its not all over yet.

The West Indies were the next team and although they had showed some promise in the tournement so far they were not considered to be a real threat for lifting the cup. They had a good solid side and were verbally confident about their chances against a 'weak, inexperienced bunch of no hopers.'

Zimbabwe were put into bat, which they did not mind and it soon became apparent that the batting was going to make runs.
Jellett and Smith played some outstanding shots and guiding Zimbabwe past 50 in the first 11 overs was a comfortable start for them. The West Indies, for their part, had some sloppy bowling and they were punished by a refreshed Smith in particular. However, after 79 runs on the board Smith lost concentration and gifted his wicket.
Eclipse, who had become great at supporting his partners, did just that and Jellett began to steal the show. Eclipse came and went having made a reasonable score again.
Craze did the same as he did against Pakistan. Although looking less nervous he had hardly got settled before he tried to play a wild shot and he completely missed and was bowled.

Jellett continued to bat well as new parnters came and went and keeping the run rate at 5 he finished unbeaten on 140.
At the end of the innings he received a well deserved standing ovation.

Now could the bowler match such a brilliant batting performance.

It wasn't long before Hall did with the ball the equivalent to what Jellett did with the bat. Reducing the West Indies to 26-4 with bowling of extrordinary quality. He bowled Campbell for 1, then saw Bluefox make a wonderful dive to catch Lara for 8. Then almost repeat the move to catch Sarwan for 12 before taking Chanderpaul's middle stump when he only reached 2. The West Indies were in disarray, their top order smashed to bits.
It was always going to be hard to recover from this position but when Richards started to bowl it was impossible. His accuracy was impeccable and it wasn't long before he had taken Jacobs and Tuckett.
Reuben followed up nicely with a great lbw appeal which saw McGarrel go for 1 and then in the 26 over Richards took the last wickets in three balls. West Indies 99 all out.

A fantastic victory which has confirmed a semi final place.

It was a cloudy morning and the pitch favoured fast bowlers so it seemed prudent to replace Tarick with Nath. Zimbabwe new they were through to the semi and really this result was not going to change anything but it would be a good confidence boost to win and enter the semis on a high.

Zimbabwe were put into bat after losing the toss. The day was going to be sunny in the afternoon so Zimbabwe were going to have to bat well in order to keep South Africa under pressure.

South Africa's pace bowling soon put Jellett and Smith to the test. However, they fended off soem tricky balls until an Smith was out lbw to a superb ball from Kalis.
Eclipse unfortunately didn't settle either. The rough was proving to be difficult to cope with and Eclipse managed only 11 before edging it to 2nd slip of the bowling of Klusener.

When Craze came in he was ordered to play safe for a few overs until he was well settled given his impetuousness of recent matches and the difficult pitch they were playing on. Craze heeded the advice and his partnership with Jellett was truly magnificent. Lasting until the last over of the innings and making 173 runs Craze and Jellett mastered the bounce and began to play in a controlled yet aggressive way which punished poor balls and defended the accurate, fast paced experienced bowling of the South Africa attack.

Jellett once again carried his bat and has now hit 261 runs since last being out. It was a reasonable total and if the bowling could once again match Jellett's batting Zimbabwe were in with a good chance.

It started off well with Kearsley taking a wicket in the second over and Nath following up with a couple of wickets so the score stood at 56-3.
Kallis started to prove problems for the Zimbabwe attack and his splendid innings of 97 was cut short eventually by Richards but not before Cullinan was out for 45 and McKenzie got himself run out with a mix up with him. The game was close, although the run rate was under 4, South Africa were losing wickets. Bluefox dismissed Klusener for 0 so the score was 220 for 7.

16 runs needed off 4 overs with 3 wickets.

Unfortunately Reuben lost his line with nerves and South Arfica got all 16 runs in his over taking a 3 wicket victory with 3 overs to spare.

It was disappointing to lose especially with such a tough game against Pakistan coming up. Hall's bowling looked particularly weak and conceding 62 runs in 10 overs was not a good sign. Nath got two wickets but at 4.6 an over he will need to improve his line and length if he is to make an impact against Pakistan.
