Ooh my 1000th post

After going unbeaten for a long while the club were experiencing somewhat of a boom in spectator numbers. This had a knock on effect on merchandising sales and reporter Craig Matthew-Johnson went to interview Joan and Claire the girls that run the club shup:

CMJ: So girls I hear sales are up.
Claire: Yeah but we don’t get any commission, it just means we have less time to discuss last nights Corrie.
CMJ: And do your make up?
Claire: That too.
CMJ: So do you get many people asking you out?
Joan: Whats that got to do with the sales?
CMJ: Just asking thats all, thought i doubt anyone would ask you out looking like that. Anyway what’s been selling well?
Joan: We’ve been selling a lot of team photo’s and a fair few copies of Halsey and Chapman’s coaching manual ’Spinning the Web’ but our biggest seller is the personalised CW replica shirt.
CMJ: Excellent, who’s the biggest name then?
Claire: Well Buggsy sells a few and Chapman of course, but Cloete seems to sell the most.
CMJ: I reckone people would buy anything from you love, Anyone who doesn’t sell many?
Claire:Well we’ve only ever sold one Neil Pickup shirt.
CMJ: Really? Who bought that?
Joan: Well 2 lads bought it for their mate, but I think it was for a joke because the kid came and exchanged it for an inflatable spider the day after.
CMJ: Do you want to catch a movie tonight?
Joan: OK
CMJ: Not you fatty, Claire. What do you say Claire? No? oh well a few cans and a copy of Razzle it is then.

The next match was away to Warwickshire. It proved to be a match of great swings and good cricket. Without Malone and Gray on England duty, CW still fielded a strong line-up and they chose to bowl upon winning the toss. Nath immediately broke through, snaring both openers. Wagh, Bell and Penney provided resistance but Chambers got a golden. Brown frustrated the web just when they thought they could whip the tail out. He scored 57 to add to Bell’s 80 to get Warwicks to a decent score but Chapman’s 2 late wickets swung it in CW’s favour. 263 all out.

The usual top order failure was followed by a solid innings from Bluefox and a mature one from Jellett. The fireworks were provided by Richards whose century came of 95 balls and with Nath adding a crucial 49, CW had a lead of 132 at 395 all out.

Powell and Wagh batted well for the second wicket but the loss of both of them soon after each other was followed by Penney and then Bell to leave Warwicks 176-5 and seemingly in trouble. Enter Dougie Brown the man who had been such a pain in the first innings. He forged a stand of 185 with Keith Piper(78) and smashed a magnificent century to propel Warks to 430 all out, a lead of 298 with 2 sessions left.

Any hopes of a run chase were extinguished pretty quickly, CW fell to 90-6 at tea and it looked bad, very bad. That was when Kearsley came in and he added 34 with Richards and 40 with Nath but the 9th wicket fell with 18 overs to go the crowd thought it was over. They didn’t count on Kearlsey and last man Chapman. They held out superbly without offering a chance and Kearsley finished 46* from 147 balls with Chapman 10* from 36.

Overall, disappointing 2nd innings bowling effort but great stand to get the draw.

Worcestershire were the next opponents in the National League at Worcester. Jellett was rested as he was a bit tired after staying up late the night before the match and returning international Gray replaced him. Malone also returned and was moved up to 3 in the batting order as CW went for more options in the bowling attack. With Mr Wright injured the fast bowling options were Nath, Kearsley and Malone with Chapman, Halsey and Richards the spinners.

Winning the toss and batting first, Eclipse and Smith got them off to a solid start with a partnership of 48, then Malone came in and he and Eclipse put on 79 in quick time. Bluefox put on 56 with Eclipse aswell as they reached 183-2 but then 2 quick wickets halted progress, Eclipse departing for 94 from 76 balls. Weber and Gray put together a century partnership to keep the runs flowing, Weber’s 70 coming from just 48 balls. CW managed to reached 305-7 from their 45.

Worcestershire’s reply wasn’t pretty, although Kearsely and Nath took some punishment, Star bowler Malone soon had them in desperate trouble with 5 wickets and Halsey and Chapman took another 4 wickets to bowl the hapless side out for 140 and put CW top of the table.

With rumours of unrest from certain players in the second team over selection the CW board released the following statement:

“The CW board would like to emphasise the Team Ethic which this club adheres to, we expect members of the squad to accept the team selections and let their performances do the talking. However we do not wish to have unhappy players at the club and any player that wishes to may have his contract terminated at the end of the season and be released from the CW side.”

Big game - cup semi and Cricket Web had to travel to Leeds of all places in their attempt to secure passage to Lords. The cricket web board decided to stump up for a top hotel for the night before in an effort to get the players best prepared. Unfortunately all the top hotel’s in Leeds had heard about the Web’s antics before and refused to book them in. Forced to stay at a youth hostel, Chaulk and Ferd set of the fire alarm at 4 in the morning and the sprinklers soaked everyone, the Web were thrown out on the spot and forced to spend the rest of the night on the team coach, apart from Rueben Thomas and Bluefox who had pulled some Leeds Lasses and were showing them a good time.

So the morning of the game dawned and the squad was a bit worse for wear, the same side as for the last match was put out and CW won the toss and batted, mainly because Bluefox was nursing a hangover and didn’t want to take to the field.

With Brad Smith and Buggsy going cheaply he was at the crease soon enough and blew away the cobwebs with some fine hitting as he and Eclipse combined to put on 15, Eclipse hit 91 andB luefox scored 86 from 75 balls before departing to take some aspirin. Jellett was also in the hutch quickly but Gray hit a 30 ball 46 to propel CW to a very good total 319-9 after the 50.

Early strikes for Buggsy and Kearsley were followed by a solid innings from Richardson of 67. From 118-2 though Yorkshire absolutely folded, The third wicket fell to Chapman in the 21st over and they were all out in the 29th. Richards only bowled four overs but took 6-21 as Yorks**** committed suicide.

In to the final go Cricket Web and in fine form too.

After the highs there must be some lows and this must rank as one of them, as Cloete put it, “I don’t like losing at the best of times but to lose to a bunch of inbred farmers is too much to take.” His temper might have been running a bit high after losing 500 pounds to some locals in a game of Poker at the pub the night before the match, but his mood was soon to be felt by the rest of the squad as they lost a match in which they were clearly the better side.

Enforced changes were made as a result of the international call ups of Malone and Gray, Cloete returned after injury and Bennett won a place in the side after a fine knock In the seconds. Chapman was left out and Hall came In to open the bowling with Kearsley as the only other pace option given the injuries to Mr Wright and Patrick Nath.

CW won the toss and had no hesitation in batting despite the cloudy conditions. Eclipse and Brad Smith put on 50 but they were going slow and Eclipse lost his wicket in an attempt to lift the rate. Bennett came in and the scoring rate actually dropped even more, the crowd were relieved when Smith was out after scoring a slow half century. Cloete forced a much better rate when he came in but Bennett plodded along before he was finaly out for 64 from 191 balls. Bluefox was out quickly and Jellett hit a brisk but brief 20, followed soon by Weber hitting 12 from 11. Cloete went for 61 and Richards and Kearsley took them past 300 but Kearsely was left not out on 31 with the tail gone. All out for 328.

The Yorkshire first innings included one of those periods when CW lost control of the game. Tom Halsey had bowled an excellent spell to take 4 wickets and Yorkshire were 111-6 and reeling. But former Scotland/England all rounder Hamilton combined with Fellows to add 135 for the seventh wicket and bring the Yorkies back into it. Hamilton finished unbeaten on 78 as Yorks got 281. Halsey picked up 5-99.

Speed was of the essence and once CW lost 3 wickets Bluefox and Jellett turned on the style for a 71 partnership, Weber came in and played delightfully for his 79 but just when CW were right on top Yorkshire struck to skittle the tail and leave 328 for victory, stiff but doable.

They starrted brilliantly with Wood and Mcgrath putting on 140. CW bowlers were surprisingly ineffective on a wearing pitch and that must be a worry for the future, the reappearance of Chapman is inevitable. Stead carried on the openers’ good work with another half century. Richards induced some minor panic with 4 quick wickets to leave them 8 down but Vic Craven’s 39* guided Yorks home to a 2 wicket victory.

Very disappointing for CW who now lie 4th after 6 matches.(W2 D3 L1) The time has come to find out if they have the stomach for a title fight or is relagation a possibility?
