Bangladesh: A quest for glory. [Mediocre ICC 2005 tale]

2nd One day match...we have no change but NZ have a couple of changes:

New Zealand XI
1. C McMillan
2. S Fleming (c)
3. J Oram
4. P Fulton
5. K Mills
6. L Vincent
7. B McCullum (wk)
8. J Franklin
9. T Canning
10. D Tuffey
11. I O'brien

NZ won the toss and sent Bangladesh in to bat.

Islam and Iqbal did what they usually do in ODI..make a start and look to go on then get out to silly shots. Rahman was out for a duck playing stupidly too. Sonet showed why he's our best ODI player with a classy and sensible 86 backed up by Aftab Ahmed's 49 and Manjural Islams 27.

Our bowlers were fantastic however! At one stage Anwar Hossain had bowled 7 overs no wicket for 9 runs! He came back on for the final spell and got 1 wicket for 14 runs off 8.4 overs...

Manjural Islam bowled very tight until a couple of overs when Canning got onto him but he took revenge and got him out and ended up with a five wicket haul!

Bangladesh 6 for 231.
Ishraq Sonet 86 N.O.
Aftab Ahmed 49
T Canning 2-38
J Franklin 2-49

New Zealand all out 183.
L Vincent 54
T Canning 23
Manjural Islam 5-51
Nazmul Hossain 2-38

Bangladesh won by 48 runs.
MOTM: Majural Islam

3rd ODI. Same line ups.

The super all rounder bug seems to have reached Tama Canning when he hit 35 off 32 8-)

I guess its our fault we didn't get him and Vincent out when NZ were just 7 for 133. THey went on to make 190

Sigh. Our batting started excellent then we were let down as an easy win slipped away.

New Zealand 7 for 190
L Vincent 70 N.O.
T Canning 35 N.O.
Anwar Hossain 2-33
Arafat Sunny 2-48

Well, this was an excellent performance by most of our batters, and some bowlers! Iqbal and Ahmed got us off to a good start with a partnership of 82. Ahmed and Saleh then put on 52 before Ahmed was out. Then a massive 3rd wicket partnership between Saleh and Naeem Islam saw 210 added to the total. Naeem was unlucky to fall just short of his century...

Saleh and Rahman put on 50 before Saleh was out for his highest score of 171. THe next 3 wickets fell for 8 runs and our total didn't look to get past 450.

Then Elias and Arafat Sunny stopped the collapse with 51 which was followed by an amazing 122 run stand for the 9th wicket between Arafat Sunny (124 N.O.) and Rezaul Haque, 68. Even the last wicket partnership was worth 55. A good performance all round...

Arafat Sunny then bowled a beautiful spell taking 5 for 65. No doubt, he was man of the match.

Bangladesh all out 633.

Crumbs! THe first day was rain and light effected and we only got in two sessions. We batted quite well with pretty much everyone getting starts (the last three were the only ones to score under 30 but managed to get 15 or more).

Elias Sunny played the match of his life taking 12 wickets and hitting 90 runs. They avoided the follow on, just, late on day four. We came out swinging and amazingly managed to do better in aggressive batting than we ever have before, quickly getting 157 from basically a session. We declared and gave ourselves 2 and a bit sessions to get them out for less than 313. We came mighty close and with 30 mins left Ferreira blocked out the rest of the innings. If we had only those extra overs from when the game was rain effected...

...anyway, we should get them in the next match :)

Big win over Sri Lanka there.

Batting first it looked a good pitch to bat on day one but would get better for the spinners. Four batsmen reached 50 and another couple got starts. Manjural Islam unlucky to miss out on his 2nd test hundred.

We bowled solid and consistent and it paid off. They just got past the follow on. The seamers opened the bowling taking 4 wickets which was followed by the spinners finishing off the rest.

With a lead of nearly 200 and 2 and a half days left we were obviously looking to bat quickly and in just 3 sessions posted 270 runs! leavng us with nearly half of day four and all of the final day to dismiss Sri Lanka.

They wanted to win too and batted agressivley but lost wickets and as they lost more got more defensive. At one stage they were 7 down in the final session and could've drawn but 2 wickets in 2 overs ruined that and were all out soon after.

Would be awesome to get another series win!

Roll on match 2..

In this test Manujural Islam passed 1000 runs (@39.86) and 70 wickets (@25.21) from 20 matches.
Nafees Iqbal also passed 1000 runs (@36.71) from 15 tests.
In the previous test Aftab Ahmed passed 1000 runs (42.26) in 14 tests. :)

This was without a doubt, our most solid and classiest win. No scrambling to get anyone out, or trying to make runs or hold on. We batted smartly, slowly and surely and bowled even better. Sri Lanka never looked in it and it showed with this massive win.

Nafees Iqbal was robbed of a century with a dubious LBW decision on 93. Sonet and Rahman both posted 50's and Saleh hit an impressive 79.

Bowling went well except Samaraweera hung around like a bad smell remaining unbeaten on 94. Manjural Islam took 5 wickets.

We batted again with a lead of around 150 with a bit of time to go. Batting collapses in the past have been our downfall. Today was a different story as Arif Ahmed and Nafees Iqbal broke the record for the 1st wicket partnership for Bangladesh with 164.

5 batsmen hung around as Iqbal got to his 2nd test century then we declared with a day to bowl out the tourists.

Three quick wickets before lunch and they were looking shakey. The Sunny spinners took 34 overs between them to finish off the rest of the line up.

Our first series clean sweep!

With the rise of Elias Sunny, he has taken over as 2nd choice spin all rounder in front of Mohammad Ashraful. Ashraful's contract has been terminated and lef tout of the twenty man squad. He is replaced by H Ismail, a right handed opening batsman aged 23.
He has made his debut in FC this season with an average of 40 and 3 centuries. I'll post his full details later.
