I'm in, and I'm pretty reasonable at this game.

The Super Cup kicked off at the home of cricket as defending Champions Surrey visited, a tough task to anyone - but the man in the hot seat was as good as they come, the only man to complete the "Bedfordshire Challenge", and inside three seasons too.
Jamie Dalrymple and Abdul Razzaq came in as Middlesex bolstered their spin battery and lower order on a pitch that looked set to turn from the word go. Razzaq and Fraser kept things tight early on, before twirlers Razzaq, Tufnell and Paul Weekes followed suit as despite Ally Brown's cameo 67, Surrey only mustered 208-6. The hosts' reply began poorly, however, and 87-2 became 125-5 as Razzaq, Koenig and Strauss fell quickly. The lower order kept fighting, however as Shah, Joyce and Dalrymple all played brisk, gutsy knocks and with two overs to go, David Nash and Angus Fraser needed six. Fraser took two off Saqlain, but was then caught close in by Hollioake with one ball left, which Phil Tufnell bizarrely took a single off. One over, three to win became four balls, three to win, before Tufnell creamed Bicknell through the covers for four to the disbelief of the bowler and fans. Middlesex won by one wicket! ********************************************** Middlesex v Surrey Super Cup - group match - 28 Apr 2002 ********************************************** Surrey - 1st Innings ---------------------------------------------- M Butcher c Joyce b Fraser 2 A Stewart c Nash b Razzaq 28 M Ramprakash b Tufnell 50 G Thorpe c Hutton b Weekes 14 A Brown c Joyce b Fraser 67 A Hollioake c Hutton b Razzaq 33 A Tudor not out 5 M Bicknell not out 0 I Salisbury S Mushtaq J Ormond ---------------------------------------------- Extras (nb2,w2,b1,lb4) 9 TOTAL (6 wkts, 50 overs) 208 ********************************************** O M R W ---------------------------------------------- J Dalrymple 10 0 50 0 P Weekes 10 0 39 1 P Tufnell 10 2 36 1 A Razzaq 10 1 40 2 A Fraser 10 2 38 2 ---------------------------------------------- 1-14 2-40 3-62 4-115 5-200 ************************************ Middlesex - 1st Innings ---------------------------------------------- P Weekes b Tudor 25 B Hutton b Ormond 2 A Razzaq lbw b Ormond 56 S Koenig c & b Mushtaq 19 A Strauss b Tudor 4 O Shah lbw b Bicknell 32 E Joyce c Bicknell b Mushtaq 20 D Nash not out 18 J Dalrymple lbw b Bicknell 19 A Fraser c Hollioake b Mushtaq 5 P Tufnell not out 5 ---------------------------------------------- Extras (nb1,w3,b1) 5 TOTAL (9 wkts, 49.3 overs) 210 ********************************************** O M R W ---------------------------------------------- I Salisbury 10 0 41 0 M Bicknell 9.3 0 44 2 S Mushtaq 10 0 47 3 A Tudor 10 1 49 2 J Ormond 10 2 28 2 ---------------------------------------------- 1-4 2-57 3-87 4-99 5-125 7-164 8-197 9-205 ********************************************** Middlesex won by 1 wicket Man of the match: A Razzaq ********************************************** |

Things went rapidly tits-up against Essex, however, as Aftab Habib (!!) ripped through the middle order and another disciplined bowling effort (Essex 223-7, Flower 104) was wasted as after Ben Hutton's 56, 90-1 became 108-5 and then 150-9. Tufnell and Dalrymple added 21 for the last wicket, but it was never going to be enough.
