RIP Cloughie

I have just been told that, sadly, Brian Clough, arguably the greatest football manager of all time, has passed away today.

I am heartbroken, and if it is true, will be posting nothing else today.

RIP young man.

My thoughts are with his family, he was a great man and a fantastic manager. Very unlucky that he was never given the opportunity to manage England. He would have done a good job, I have no doubt about that.

RIP Cloughie.

Great Man, Great Manager

Top anecdotes - Stu Pearce is dropped from the first team and goes to ask Cloughie why:

Pearce: Boss, Why am i in the second team?
Clough: Because you're too good for the thirds son!

I break my self-imposed silence to (belatedly) thank Sky News.

After receiving a lashing from Gary Birtles, Viv Anderson and Frank Clark, they have stopped pushing the alcohol and bungs so much and are now concentrating on the life of a genius.

And they read my tribute out several times...

Brian Clough was arguably the greatest football manager of all time, because
he didn't need hundreds of millions of pounds behind him in order to win
championships and European Cups.

It remains a huge travesty of justice that he was always passed over when
the knighthoods for services to football were handed out to lesser mortals.

Well said Luckyeddie, Brian Clough was simply the greatest manager in the World ever he guided 2 semi-big clubs from the Second Division to the Championship and with Forest the european cup TWICE, Ferguson and Wenger have spent loads of Money and have not won it more then once.......

How he was Never Knighted or England manager is a Mystery to us all,

The discussion at the moment involving Derby and Forest supporters is what sort of lasting tribute should the clubs put in place - and it's a difficult one.

Two clubs, the greatest of rivals, and Cloughie won championships at both (and European Cups at Forest, of course). That seems to imply that the memorial ought to be in Nottingham - but he lived in Derby.

My vote goes for something in between - the main A52 road which links the cities of Nottingham and Derby should be renamed Brian Clough Way (just a shame it won't ever be 'Sir' Brian Clough Way now).

There is a precedent - witness Clive Sullivan Way leading into Hull.

I can't think of a better way - a monument 12 miles long for a man who seemed larger than life itself.

There had been some talk of a posthumous knighthood for the great man.

Think this falls rather pathetically into the "too little, too late" category. A legend who's been retired & in poor health for over a decade should have been "Sir" long ago. Frankly, I'm surprised that an arch-populist like Blair missed such a trick.

Perhaps being a (whisper it quietly) socialist counted against Cloughie...

One final thought - everyone I have spoken to on other sites and on the DCFC mailing-list thinks that re-naming the A52 between Derby and Nottingham 'Brian Clough Way' is a wonderful idea.

My friend Howard suggests that it is so very apt because "...the greatest thing to come out of Derby is Brian Clough; similarly the greatest thing to come out of Nottingham is the A52".

Unarguably one of the greatest managers of all time - but I thought he was a bit of an idiot at times.

RIP Brian Clough.

It's gaining momentum - been suggested now on a couple of radio stations, representatives from both clubs think it's a good idea and there's talk of the city councils getting involved.

The idea started this morning when a few of us from Ramstrust were discussing tributes. We sort-of discounted the 'statue' idea because we are in the final stages of the 'Steve Bloomer' project - and that already involves a statue.

I'm not going to get into 'whose idea it was' - it was a bit of a communal thing which just sort-of evolved over about 5 or 10 minutes when I mentioned what they had done in Hull, but seeing as N*ttingh*m and Derby are still (relative) giants of football in the East Midlands, seeing as the majority of football supporters from the 'away' sides and just incidental visitors to the area approach the cities via the M1 AND the M1 exit for both cities is at J25 - the A52 - it just seems a nice idea that so many people will be reminded of a man who brought so much pleasure to so many in the area.

'Brian Clough Way' - got a nice ring to it already.

RIP and a sad sad lose.

IIRC didn't Roy Keane first began his career under Brian Clough at Forest before going to Old Trafford?
