Olympics - does anyone actually care anymore?

Had great fun watching the winter olympics this time around. Such bizarre events - how many different versions of shooting penalties can be found to justify different versions of Biathlon. Very confusing!

Also incredibly bizarre to see New Zealand ahead of Australia and Great Britain on the medal table. Given the small number of NZ Olympic Gold Medallists, the two this time around will be famous for life and beyond. Effectively already NZ's greatest winter athletes of all time.

It sounds like the British 4-man bobsleigh did pretty awesomely, finishing 6th, with no central funding.

Sounds like lots of our competitors had no funding. Curling gets a huge chunk of money so needed the results it got but to crowd fund and finish 6th is almost a better achievement than a gold and silver.

Yesterday it was announced that Russia and Belarus athletes would be allowed to compete in the Winter Paralympics as neutrals. Of course today they’ve been removed. It makes you wonder if these sporting bodies actually follow world affairs at all, never mind understand the strength of feeling against the war mongers.

They did actually. Early on in the conflict Fifa announced that Russian players could play in the Olympic style, no anthem, no flag and a different name to their countries ordinary competing name. But then they got ripped to shreds about it, teams refusing to play etc and yeah. Everyone else followed ****.

Wouldn't blame the corpos for this

the whole compete as neutrals thing has always struck me as being a slightly odd...er....solution(?) tbh

basically writing "NOT RUSSIA" across every Russian athlete or whatever doesn't strike me as a particularly effective way of not giving Russia a platform

They “did actually” what? If they understood what was going on in the world they would have instantly removed Russia from everything, not attempted a half baked compromise that anyone with a brain knew couldn’t work.

Yeah that's what I believe too, I'd imagined your opinion was that Russia should be allowed to compete. Apologies.
