Santaro beating Novak I assume would be a bigger shock. Monfils a joke at times, Novak even back then was pretty special.

Bad feeling the Rogers cup could turn into a formality for Federer, a few shocks already in his side and the truly awful Ferrer in the next round. :sadangel:

Nadal also started well. Him vs. Shapovalov should be interesting.

Yeah, I really can't see anyone stopping Federer before the final. No doubt Monfils or someone will beat him now.

Poor performance that from Rafa. Its hard to criticise that much a man who cruised to a French Open only a few months ago, but I don't think he has that clutchness he once had, so many close matches like that he has blown over last few years.

Its without doubt one of the most depressing elite men's competitions in years, basically a glorified Challenger competition with a few obvious exceptions. Hopefully the journeymen don't lower the tone even further when they play the genuinely world class players in the next few rounds.

The likes of Thiem, Raonic, Goffin, Dimitrov and Nadal really need to improve, because losing to mediocrity like they have over last few days highlights what many people fear, this week, next and more importantly the US Open could be an absolute formality for Roger Federer.

Only Zverev will be of any concern to him right now.

C'mon Niall, you're being way too harsh here. Competition wasn't much better when Djokovic was annihilating everyone in 2015 either. Only a 34 year Federer was giving him decent competition, and even then, he couldn't win the important matches. Last year Murray took No. 1 after Djokovic started his post-RG descent. Don't see the big difference.

Great win for Shapovalov, about time the younger guys started coming to the party.

Nonsense. The depth is still amazing. The number 17 seed won the Australian Open. :ph34r:
