Down to wage hyper-inflation in the last 20 years. Granted, our spending in the late 90s/early 00s wasn't sustainable, but looking back I think we really missed a trick in the mid 90s. Gascoigne was on about £18k a week at Rangers and I can remember the outrage when Ravanelli joined Middlesborough on a £40,000 a week contract, which was completely unheard of. We could compete with absolutely anyone in Europe in terms of wages back then; had we allowed Walter Smith to leave in 1997 like he wanted to and appointed Advocaat we could have signed Ronaldo from Barcelona. That would have been immense.
