Considering how globally massive chess as a sport is as compared to cricket, and how billions of Indians are worried about chess, meh.

Cricket is hardly global. Achievement wise, Anand is way ahead of Tendulkar comparatively.

Not at all. What is the number of Grandmasters whom Anand compete with each year? And what is the number of players whom Tendulkar has competed in his career? Any comparison is laughable. Chess still remains a dormant sport in India. While Tendulkar was instrumental in making it a craze on his own.

You are mistaking popularity with achievement. Anand competes against many grand masters.. He has effectively been player of the year 6 times. How many times can Tendulkar claim that he was player of the year.

Is chess actually classified as a sport? Not me being facetious, I've just never heard it referred to like that.

It isn't. Fails the "Stephen Hawking" test.

Any activity where the motor neuron disease-striken theoretic physicist could beat you must be purely mental, so devoid of the physical aspect, it isn't a sport.

Chess is always covered in the sports news media section and in sports magazines in India. Never knew it wasn't a sport.

Anand is my favorite Indian sportsperson of all time. What he has done for chess in India (Directly or Indirectly) is simple amazing. His Achievements, IMO, are highest and most decorated among Indian sports fraternity. And yes, Chess is a sport.

and it's just a bonus that he is an absolute nice guy, not like some of those other arrogant pricks at the top of the chess world...

I have no idea how it's a sport either to be honest. Not putting down the great chess players out there, but if you had to run with a piece and avoid cover tacklers to place it in the appropriate position then it'd be a sport.

I was fortunate enough to meet Anand when he was a junior at a chess tournament in Thessaloniki in 1988....

He was a very pleasant young man. Not so young now, though!
