Stage 2, Mannum - Hahndorf, 148 km

A short stage, but good breakaways ought to stir up the field; a number of serious climbs to be tackled, including a 9km long in the middle which could decide the stage if the pace is high enough.

Sergei Lagutin of Navigators Insurance broke off on the second climb, and was chased by a couple of groups, with the 5-man group including Manjunath Reddlapalli seeming the strongest. They caught him at the 45km mark, and began working together to keep the field away.

However, Reddlapalli was wasting his energy; Ljungblad and Longo Borghini both looked significantly stronger on the climbs, and he decided to sit back and wait. On the 9km climb, the front group broke apart, leaving Ljungblad and Lagutin in the lead as they began the descent. Meanwhile, further back in the field, Bugs Malone had counter-attacked to a South Australia.com-initiated attack, and were a minute or so ahead of the peloton.

Ljungblad kept fighting, and held a near 2-minute lead by the foot of the next climb, with 40km to the finish. Malone raced through the groups, and went in hot pursuit of Ljungblad, gambling everything on chasing down Ljungblad before the top of the hill.

It nearly worked. However, Ljungblad held a 17-second lead over the top, leaving Malone to do plenty of dirty work on the downhill; Malone then unwisely took the lead in the two-man group, Ljungblad attacked from his wheel to begin the sprint, and Malone simply had no answer. However, with a significant gap back to the peloton, the two have started excellently in their chase for the general classification. In the main bunch, Mitch Docker secures a stranglehold on the points classification as he hung on over the mountains and eased home into third place.

Whats up with the topless guys in the sprint finish screenshot? Would have thought that cycling was above the people that like to get pissed and stand topless cheering for the grandstands.

Stage 3
Stirling - Victor Harbour; 123 km

A few hills, but I thought this wouldn't pose a problem. As it turned out, it was the downhill part that was most dangerous.

A strong breakaway of six got away early, including Perry of Barloworld, Balciunas from Agritubel, and de Schrooder of Chocolade Jacques. They had a maximum lead of six minutes, but Casson Dairy began rallying with 80km to go, attempting to catch as much as possible before a slow pace over the climb would protect the sprinters.

This did not work. Unibet shattered the field, and in the crazy race to get back into the peloton, Ryan Dunn crashed into the asphalt. He lost three minutes and damaged his hip, and wired that there was no point in the others giving him helped. With Kearsley having struggled more on the uphill than Dunn, it seemed unlikely that Casson Dairy would have anyone in the final dash.

Despite the high pace of the peloton, the breakaway seemed in with a genuine chance when they had one minute with 10 km to go. Yet, the sprinter teams reeled them in easily, though Kearsley struggled with the pace and could not get forward. Forner impressed with a top ten placing, but once again the sprint was predictable.

Stage 4
Willunga - Willunga, 147.4 km

The 4-km 10 % climb with 20 km to go is likely to shatter the field to bits; this will be Malone's chance to wrest the orange jersey from Ljungblad. After an early downhill, there's three laps in a 30-km circuit before attacking the final hill.

The expected breakaway came on 14km, but was judged slightly too dangerous by Casson Dairy, who set an early pace. However, after the breakaway was caught Savings & Loans somehow flowed away from the group. Julian Dean joined the 12-man effort, along with Longo Borghini and other assorted riders.

It was doomed. Attacking to get rid of the Savings & Loans team worked rarely, though Dean and Pearson eventually got a lead with 25km to go; shortly afterwards the climb began and Forner raced in at a massive pace to catch up, with Casson Dairy having dominated the catch to the breakaway. Dean took the lead in the main bunch when he was caught, but this led to a lower pace, and Jelle Vanendert began attacking with 3km to the top.

This was a good time to challenge Ljungblad, who was still stuck somewhere in the middle of the 70-man peloton. Malone raced onto Vanendert's wheel, and caught up after 400 metres before continuing to push.

Motivated by fan writing, Malone left Vanendert with ease

Malone raced away easily, and though there were other attackers from the main bunch, such as Rujano of Unibet, Brandt (Predictor-Lotto) and Gerrans of AG2R, Malone held on easily and had over a minute when he passed the top. Ljungblad desperately tried to defend the jersey, attacking over the climb, but still trailed by more than two minutes over the climb, some twenty seconds ahead of a Crédit Agricole-led peloton along with Dwyer and Forner.

The final 20 km were a time to collect groups; Gerrans caught up with Rujano and Vanendert, and the three chased Malone well while cooperating, while Ljungblad and Brandt lost time to a fast-riding peloton. However, as seen above, Malone had a significant gap back entering the final sloping two kilometres. Though Gerrans rode hard and sprinted away from his second group, Malone was unbeatable, and could celebrate the stage win and the orange leaders' jersey.

Btw, can anyone make a 69 x 46 sized logo for us to wear on the jerseys? Gets a bit confusing having unibet on our jerseys. :p

I was attempting something yellow background with red writing. Obviously lacked credibility.
