All evidence points to Conor not being particularly heavy handed when compared to a world class boxer

Not surprising as there was very little he threw that wasn't a sloppy arm punch

Also this whole 'Conor only won the first 3 rounds because Mayweather let him thing' is such a nonsense argument.

If Mayweather could have starched Conor in the first 3 rounds with no risk, he would have. If any of us get in the ring there with Mayweather we're done in the first minute of Round 1. No question.

He couldn't do that to Conor because Conor showed enough nous and skill to force Mayweather to sit back, watch, and figure out a path. Conor posed enough of a threat to earn those 3 rounds from Mayweather.

Likewise, if he could walk out in Round 4 and KO Conor, he would have. Why would he not? Why hold back? He himself said he expected it to be done in Round 6/7, but it took longer than he expected because Conor was a lot better than he expected.

Conor didn't win rounds due to pity from Floyd. Conor didn't make it to Round 10 because Floyd, for the first time in his life, in his final fight, after the tickets had been sold and the PPVs bought, decided now is the time for him to carry his opponent for 6 rounds more than he needed to, just to give the fans something to watch. Thats ridiculous. He's KOed former world champions in 5 rounds, and he's gone 12 rounds doing nothing but defend. He does what he needs to do to win fights.

The fight went to round 10 because Conor was good enough to warrant a 40 year old Floyd needing 10 rounds to stop him. Conor won all the rounds he won (3, 4,5 however you look at it) because he earned the respect of Floyd to the point where Floyd let him have those rounds.

I don't get why people are trying so hard to discredit what he did. He did very well, it was a good fight, and Mayweather won. Why do people have such a chip on their shoulder about this? Why the negativity? Why the desire to discredit what just happened? I don't get it.

I don't even watch boxing and it was clear as day that Mayweather just wanted Conor to waste his energy. Even the comms were saying that and so did he after the match.

If your point is that Mayweather was somehow forced into this tactic because Conor was enough of a threat, then you're wrong imo. It just seems like that was the plan all along because it was the smartest option and he stuck to it perfectly.

idk **** about boxing though, so wtv

Nah see if Mayweather could walk forward at will and starch McGregor then why hang back and wait?

There was a threat with engaging early with a fresh McGregor who he didn't have a read on yet. So he took the more guaranteed route. Floyd said that hinself. And McG deserves credit for being able to even provide that level of threat. He earned those rounds.

Well obviously he isn't fit for boxing. He's built his body to be optimal for 5*5 of MMA, and even then he's not the best at lasting 5 rounds at 100%. He wasn't going to be fit for 12*3 in what, 6 weeks?

The rest I disagree with. He fought in an awkward style because there is no point boxing technically with the greatest boxer of all time. We have no idea what he looks like trying to box in a 'correct' manner because he didn't attempt that. He tried to be awkward and weird, and that will lead to putting your feet in weird places and throwing punches with sub-optimal technique.

He just didn't try to hit hard. It doesn't me he can't. He's shown he can in MMA.
Tyson Fury is awkward. He can still punch properly. Being awkward doesn't mean you lose all technique.

McGregor hit Floyd with a couple of really nice counter upper cuts - probably the most impressive thing he did the whole night. Was Floyd rocked? Did his legs go at all? Did his demeanor change at all? No. If Cotto, Canelo, Mosley, Pacquiao, ODH etc hits him with that punch he probably gets dropped, or at the very least he runs for the next 2 rounds. McGregor just doesn't have that level of punching power.

Discredit what he did? He made upwards of 30 million dollars. That's fantastic. Good for him.

I don't understand why you're trying to pretend it was a good, high quality fight. It was exactly what we were expecting - a joke fight that's a fun spectacle.

is it really that hard to believe a specialist boxer is usually going to punch a lot harder, and be used to taking harder punches, than even the best MMA fighters?

fair credit to mcgregor for getting in the ring in a fighting style that restricts him and is the bread and butter of his opponent

I'd fight Mayweather for $30m tbf.

Isn't Mayweather 51-0, or does he not count the time he beat his wife in his career stats?

In 100 hundreds they'll look back and say he took on a non-boxer for the sake of beating Marciano's record. In fact they might say it next week.

See it's this kind of language that so negative and I don't understand why people have to be this way.

A joke fight is CM Punk Vs Mickey Gall, or James Toney Vs Randy Couture, or even Ali Vs Inoki.

This wasn't a joke fight.

It may have looked like a joke on paper before the fight, and you had people saying Conor wouldn't land a punch. That Mayweather would run through him and put him away. The fact he couldn't, and the fact that McGregor could win 3 (I had him winning 4) rounds out of the 10 that were fought is massively impressive.

But people are discrediting that too and not wanting to give Conor the props he deserves. I don't get it. They say it was the 'gameplan'. So either Conor was a legit threat who had to be beaten by patience and attrition, or he was a joke who proved to be better than expected and was good enough to earn Floyd's respect and thus win rounds. It's one of the two. Give the guy credit one way or another

Why people are so negative about something that doesn't even involve them. Why is it so hard to give credit where it is due.

And re his punching power - sure, perhaps those uppercuts thrown by a pro boxer would have hurt Floyd. No denying that. Just saying Connor's real power shot is the straight left thrown from range and he never threw that in this fight. He threw a lot of soft punches. It's not like he hit Floyd with all his power and failed to put him away. That didn't happen. He's definitely got some power in his hands but didn't use it. Probably some mix of wanting to preserve energy, trying to fight weirdly, and not being able to get any openings to land cleanly on Floyd.

But yes, if he was a cleaner boxer with better technique he might have caused more damage. But thats just stating the obvious and ignoring that if he was a proper boxer he might have gotten finished a lot quicker since he would have been easier to read (Floyd said he needed some time to deal with Connors 'angles', I personally didn't buy into this argument to Floyd himself said it)

It is a joke fight when someone who has never fought professionally in that sport gets put in the ring against a bloke who's had 49 pro fights and never been beaten, even though they've had two years off themselves. There was nothing at stake other than a pay day. Hell, they weren't even in the same weight division. That's a joke of a fight. Doesn't mean McGregor isn't exceptional at his sport, and if you reversed the roles he'd flatten Mayweather in an instant. But that too would be a joke because it's apples vs oranges. It's something which generates a lot of interest and was a great cash cow, but what did it really prove to anyone?

Fans of different sports + polarizing personalities + massive amount of casuals watching + jealousy of the money = some unjust criticism

For my part, the only things I didnt expect were that Floyd actually tried to stop him (let's face it, he hasnt tried to do that to anyone for 10 years) and Conor's complete lack of pop

Conor showed heart (as expected) but not much more BOXING skill than you'd expect from a guy with his background

He's a MMA fighter and it showed

Good luck to him for earning a massive payday (and he did earn it!) but he should give boxing away as he could potentially be seriously hurt should he get in the ring with a younger, hungrier guy with real power

There are probably people in the world with the physical dimensions (long leavers, fast twitch fibres) to hit a cricket ball further than Chris Gayle, having never played cricket in their lives. This not real power, this is theoretical power and is entirely irrelevant.

Wladimir Klitschko's straight right was one of the best ever because he could land it, and he could land it in such a way that people couldn't roll with the punch. He did this by meticulous judgement of range (requiring excellent footwork), disguising it with a jab, and timing it perfectly.

Conor McGregor does not have any of those skills. His ability to land his straight left depends upon setting people up with his kicks, and depends upon his opposition not being skillful enough to read and roll with punches.

A proper boxer would not have been finished quicker than McGregor. Mayweather hasn't properly stopped someone in decades, and if you watched this fight you'd see that he's definitely aged significantly (+he was taking the piss). Any top 20 welterweight would've comfortably beaten floyd last night - the top 10 would probably all knock him out.

It was a joke fight not because of anything to do with the athletes themselves but because it was a match created in response to internet and fanboy hype. It's one of those "Can Chuck Norris beat Rajnikanth" memes that go around the internet. Smart organisers picked on it and made an event of it and made a **** tone of money. The joke was on the people. The athletes did the job they were asked to do.

One thing about Floyd is that he does have an amazing chin and is always in incredible condition so I'd be surprised if he got ko'd BUT his hand & leg speed has definitely gone so guys like Thurman, Spence and Crawford could all potentially outpoint him easily

Based on the performance last night (and he was taking the piss tbf), i think Thurman, Spence, Porter, Crawford, Danny Garcia etc would all KO him, and guys like Amir Khan and Jeff Horn would probably outpoint him.
