Jonah Lomu Comeback

I don't have a problem with wings who're "just" finishers; that was the justification in some quarters for leaving Cueto out of The Lions 45 (!). That he's a finisher or a specialist wing, well I'm sorry he doesn't cure cancer or find alternative fuel sources, but "just" scoring tries isn't a crime to me. Think Cueto's got 8 in 8 now, including tries against Springboks & Wallabies.

& if SCW can't find space for specialist players in a squad of 45, then what's the point of bringing so many?!
The difference being that in New Zealand, we have wingers who can create.

:D

Lomu was apparently very good in his latest game for Cardiff. He rolled his ankle near the end but it was without a doubt his best performance.

Good on him I say... Can he make it back to the top? I doubt it but I hope he can prove me wrong.

Like you say it's very doubtful. I haven't seen too much of him for Cardiff in all honesty, but the big fella's shown an awful lot of intestinal fortitude to come back from what he had.

Be interesting to see if an NPC team give him a go when our season finishes.

Shouldn't be a problem I would think?

But what he may want in moolah might be a factor?

I'm not much of a rugby man really, but it's great to see Jonah coming back - you've gotta love the Lomu, and to come back after what he's been through is a fantastic effort. One of my earliest sporting memories is being terrified at the mere sight of him trampling all over England in 1995. Good luck to him. :)

You should really be contributing a bit more in the NRL thread tbh Nibbs.

Luckily he'll probably only be out for six weeks - will give him a good rest going into the Air NZ Cup.

You think the big fella has any chance of ever playing for the ABs again, Volts?

With the riches at your disposal I can't quite see it, myself. Would be a fairytale if he could tho.

Honestly? Not really.

The big “if” is whether he can get his acceleration back. That was what separated him from a loosie his size. That acceleration led to power and momentum, which was a lethal combination.

At this stage, we have Howlett, Gear, Rokocoko and Sivivatu as our four main wing options. I believe he could be the fifth best in NZ if he got back to his best, but he’d really have to try and get ahead of the Rok and Sivi on the left wing - and his workrate is a lot lower than theirs. In saying that, he’s never played a game at the top level at 100% health, so who knows what he is capable of?

No, I don't rate Howlett as one of the top wingers in the world, even on form. He can be an excellent finisher, but he's not one to create a try like, say, Caucau, Shane Williams or Sivivatu. Still wouldn't disgrace an AB jersey mind you, and can cover fullback.

Robinson's not the player he once was. He never had top-end speed, but his acceleration was lightning-quick. But that appears to have gone.
A bit like Rokocoko at times?

I remember his first year or two for the Ab's and I remember the commentators waxing lyrical over him, and it was a case of he's just finishing off the great work by Spencer/Carter etc.

Not like Rokocoko anymore. No rugby follower can watch his try through the Saffa fowards at Carisbrook last year and tell me he doesn't create.
