Mertesacker played so always liable. Awesome game, someone needs to buy Granit Xhaka. How much damage would the Swiss done if their best player featured…

Also caught highlights of the Netherlands game, predictably even against “inferior” opposition the Dutch had no ambition and created almost nothing. Portugal also fired blanks against Macedonia at home while Denmark got beaten soundly by a Brazil side which average age was 22. Group of death?

    Italy 0 Russia 3

    That's a paddlin'.

No-one does footballing corruption quite as well as Italy, despite some pretty stiff competition from elsewhere but with the PM calling for football to be suspended for two years and the coach saying he has "no problem" with Italy being withdrawn something seems even rottener in the long boot than usual.

Opens Group C right up if Italy are going to be poo too.

It's odd really, normally some of their greatest moments come after another cheating scandal. Rossi is still revered after all.

There is still time, they have to do the starting terribly and somehow getting out their group first.

What odds can you get on Italy to go out in the groups?

Kompany out apparently. Injured in the warm-up.

England: Hart, Johnson, Cahill, Terry, Cole, Milner, Parker, Gerrard, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Young, Welbeck

Nice goal, though I'm still not a fan, but if he can carry on finishing it like that....

Wellbeck, Rooney and Young developing an understanding at club level can only help England.

Reckon I rate Wellbeck a lot higher than some on here.

I reckon this will be our XI V France unless he goes for Carroll ahead of Welbeck

Likewise. He's still raw and should score about twice as many goals as he does, but he's had a pretty good season and IMO is a far better player than plenty around these parts give him credit for.
