Finding a balance

One way is that you could have a list of set averages for people to choose from, maybe like the people who have been here longest choose which set of averages they would like first. That way there would be no more complaining...

I noticed that Vimes uses negative points for batting and bowling. He should do the same with fielding - 12 or 15 being 0 points.
Here is an attempt with 0 points and minus points. You have a max of 10 and you can spend 12 (effectively 14 as you can have minus 2). Also the highest fielding rating is dropped to 27, thats what keepers sign up with and they seem to be doing a fine job now.
Here is a run down of possible sign ups:

Top Batsmen ( 39(10) BAT, 99(-2) BWL, 21(4) FLD )
Top Bowler ( 24(10) BWL, 3(-2) BAT, 21(4) FLD )
Top Keeper ( 33(8) BAT, 27(6) FLD, 99(-2) BWL )
Batting All Rounder (BAT 30 (8), BWL 36 (4), 9(0) FLD )
Bowling All Rounder (BWL 28 (8), BAT 21 (4), 9(0) FLD )

I don't think those are half bad, keepers might need higher than 27 fielding though?
Well they currently sign up with 27 don't they? Also if you increase it to 39, with that system they can have batting averages of 21, which people say is too high for a gun keeper.

Please explain?
Say someone like Liam makes a table of about 100(more/less?) players with pre-set averages and have an order of registered/unregistered Dev league members(maybe chronologically ordered from CW joining date) to pick which set of averages they would like to have, heres a small example using only 5 members

Members in picking order with regards to the CW join dates(using the last 5 posters in this topic)
1.marc71178
2.bryce
3.chaminda_00
4.Robertinho
5.new_age_ar

Averages
1.Bat:40, Bowl:50, Field:17
2.Bat:35, Bowl:32, Field:16
3.Bat:30, Bowl:29, Field:12
4.Bat:15, Bowl:24, Field:19
5.Bat: 5 , Bowl:20, Field:15

So marc71178 would get the first pick out of the list of averages, then bryce & so on. Obviously there will be a much larger selection of players aswell as much more members involved but it's just an idea....

Haha nah I think not, because then it means that newer members will be crap, and not necessarily the sort of player they want. It's sort of missing the key point here, that to "find a balance" you need to reward more experienced players, and also limit rookie signups but still allowing them to choose if they want to be a good bat, or whatever.

Tharmi's idea does look good, but maybe keepers should have a different sign up thing? They'll have to compromise - gun keeper, dud bat - dud keeper, gun bat - good keeper, good bat. I think for a reasonable keeper, 25-30 is the highest batting should go. For a shoddy keeper, maybe 30-35, and for a gun keeper, as in world class in your rookie season, 10-15 (possibly up to 20).

Well that is kind of possible if you increase the highest fielding rating to 39.

Gun Keeper/Average Bat (21 BAT, 39 FLD)
Part-Tmei Keeper/Good Bat (39 BAT, 21 FLD)
Good Keeper/Good Bat (33 BAT, 27 FLD)

Its probably better if the 39 Keepers had batting averages of 18, but i don't think 21 is going to give them too much advantage.

Hmm, should part time keepers really be as good batsman as specialist batsmen?
A part time keeper are generally as good as a first slip, so i think its fine. Also it seems we need better quiality fielders to come through, there seems to be too many Drop Catches.

It's the compromise people make - they want to be as good as they possibly can as batting/bowling, even sacrificing fielding. It's too bad :-O

Alright, reading through this thread, the points system seems the way to go. :)
But if I may complicate things more...all new sign ups should (or could) have to play a season in club teams before graduating to the Dev League?
Or during the season (or the start), teams can draft in X amount of rookies into their side if they choose. Kind of like WCC where you can only keep so many players from the line up, and then include rookies/draftees.
The problem with playing in the club sides, though, is they could get inflated averages or turn them off CW Dev league...

I like Robertinho's idea for keepers.

Just some thoughts. Sorry if they've been suggested and/or stupid.
