Not much of a match by me, 8 runs, with 2 4's, so the strike rate sucked. But i did like staying under 5 an over through my whole 10.

Hmmm, 27 off 21, certainly and improvement from my first outing... Would like to do better, however :(.

Oh well we won the game, that's all that matters.

Carmine vs Vermilion
at McLean Park

Scorecard
Ball By Ball

With 89 and 60, Manjunath Reddlapalli put in an application to be considered as specialist batsman for the upcoming season, especially as his bowling didn't contribute one jot to Carmine's eventually dominant 244-run win. It was instead Callum Thompson and S Raghav who stood forward as key support for David Kennett in the attack, while Muhammad Amir and Kingsley Clapham got five-wicket-hauls from the other side but were still bashed around the park by evidently confident batsmen.

The first day started well for the Red captain's side, as he put on 58 with Sharma and 60 with Dauth for a confident start. Mørk played a boundary-oriented game, littering cover and mid off with strikes, and it served his side well as they built their innings around the monumental 128. Matthew Sinclair played good support, making 49, but Reddlapalli's 60 was a particular highlight, even though he struggled early on.

Clapham, Dave Watt and Gaurav Nayak induced a collapse in the murk with the new ball, starting with Watt's beauty to remove Mørk in the 83rd over, past six o'clock. Reddlapalli and Thompson did slash 43 in half an hour, but then the last five wickets fell for 39. However, David Kennett used the second morning to remove both Luff (duck) and Geoff Barnett, and the Vermilion team cracked to 22 for two.

Big innings followed, however, as the weaknesses in the bowling attack became all too apparent. Raghav struggled with the long spells, but did show potential as an impact bowler, and will probably be utilised in short bursts; Reddlapalli was simply inaccurate, as was Thompson, while the spinners toiled on a typical New Zealand wicket. Kenny Dobson put in another solid application for the first-class opening slot with a one-day-esque 59, but it was really Jamee Gray and the South African Andrew Niblett who turned the game on its head. At 260 for eight, Vermilion had looked down and out, with the new ball still to come and Bennett, for a change, in wicket-taking form. But Gray dug in, striking cleanly and eventually hitting one more run than the more accomplished colleague in the Carmine side, and Niblett's 59, while not a pleasure to the eye, showed more batting talent than bowling talent in the near-30-year-old South African.

Kennett eventually ended the innings on the third morning, Vermilion leading by eleven runs, and with Mørk back in the pavilion for 54 things looked very precarious at tea, after neither Sharma, Dauth nor Sinclair had carried on with their starts. The last ball of the over just evaded Gray and went down to fine leg for four; Thompson went on to strike 54 in an ephemeral partnership of 88 with Reddlapalli, which turned the tables somewhat, while Bev Griggs helped his newfound side with 82 unbeaten runs. The running of Reddlapalli was really on a different level, however: before holing out to Robbins, he had slashed 89 runs off 104 deliveries, crossing a grand total of 120 times in a couple of hours. He admitted to exhaustion being the cause of failing to go on with a century: however, the big running was vital, as both sides looked to be running out of time.

Mørk chose to deny Griggs his century, opting instead to declare after another fielding error handed Kennett a four, and Vermilion chased an imposing 396 on a humid wicket. They got into immediate problems, as Dobson was trapped lbw by a Kennett beauty in the first over. The only highlight was the 60-run stand between Barnett and Robbins; once Thompson and Kennett had broken that, the remainder of the order fell over weakly. Kearsley's batting woes continued: the first ball landed on a length, seamed away, and took the gentlest of outside edges to Mørk behind the stumps.

Hmm, nice Mork, well played both innings :D... Keep it up .

A 22 and 33 for me... So seem to be getting settled in now in these practice matches... Need to look to step it up a bit and convert these starts into 50s and eventually 100s. :)

Wellington v Cricket Web Red
at Basin Reserve

Scorecard
Ball By Ball

The toss, friendly weather and an even friendlier captain made all the difference in the Basin, though the familiar weaknesses were present n a Dauth-less Red side. Eight batsmen were out caught in a first-innings effort of 340, with Håkon Mørk making 134 of those runs and five others being out between 25 and 30.

Wellington were put in to bat on a wicket and outfield soaked by the rain that had taken a day away from the game, reducing it to a three-day affair. They made useful shots against attacking field settings, hitting four sixes and a considerable number of boundaries, but were worked out by the Red bowlers on a helpful wicket. Raghav once again showed his worth as a strike bowler, taking four for 37 off seven overs including Fleming and a well-settled Neal Parlane, who was runner-up to Bell in the run-scoring with 44. As an added bonus, Red only conceded three extras in nearly 50 overs of first-day bowling, after bowling the hosts out for 190. Credit should also go out to Gaurav Nayak, who got considerable movement off the wicket and picked up three for 31.

The Red reply has already been treated; Kearsley looked a million dollars for a 30 once again before smashing a ball into Jesse Ryder's stomach, while Luff failed to impress as a stopgap measure for the number three role. Robbins and Clapham both stuck around, with Clapham in particular showing good mettle after a rather dismal bowling performance, while Raghav and Watt thumped 33 vital runs at the end.

With the wicket flattening out and the sun drying the outfield, the Wellington batsmen found the going easier on the third morning. Raghav only picked up the one wicket this time, and it was Clapham who was the pick of the seamers, with a couple of good balls to get the elder Parlane (Mike) and Fleming out. However, Fleming had eventually had enough of James Franklin batting, as he offered a declaration a little before five o'clock with a lead of just 65.

Fleming later explained the decision, saying that "I felt the need to test our bowlers with a difficult situation. The Reds wanted some rest and it was pretty obvious that we'd not get a positive result out of the game whatever happened, so we decided to go along." (out of report: I managed to make a non-bowler bowl, which would have resulted in an hour's work going out of the window. Instead of staying up till three, I decided on this option.)

Mørk responded in kind, with the softest of outside edges to the wicket-keeper, while Luff bashed 36 runs in a brief stand with Dobson. Mørk admitted that he "was looking for Luff to carry us home" and "show some restraint and will to see off the new ball." He more than hinted that Aseem Sharma will have a slight edge on Luff once the season starts, but noted that "there will likely be rotation for two batting spots, one seamer spot and one allrounder spot. Also, there's a couple of veteran batsmen whose spots might be endangered if they don't pick up their game soon."
