Another professional effort by Daniel Towns and Cricket Web Colts ensured a comfortable win over Cricket Web Red at the Oval. Towns paced himself well once again and looked keen on re-establishing himself as a one-day international contender. He was ultimately caught at point for 72, presenting David Kennett with his only wicket of the innings. A keen contributions from Fjermestad (35) steadied the competitive effort, then Myles Hutchinson and Kyle Wright hit 17 apiece to push on to a winning total of 273-8.
CW Red could hardly have started their innings worse. Three wickets tumbled in the first 7 overs, including Matt Luff for a duck, having moved to the middle order. But James Robertson and Zac Ritchie played positively enough to keep the chase alive. Robertson turned Hutchinson behind square for a single - his 50th run - and continued to play strongly. With 72 to his name he was undone by the returning Spinks, caught at a lone slip. Spinks then doubled his pleasure by bowling Sean Bennett (0) with an excellent yorker. Ritchie raised his fifty, but it was quickly evident that he would not have the support to guide the chase. His captain was bowled for 14 to confirm that fact, as Hutchinson went on to complete a wicket-maiden.
His replacement, Gaurav Nayak found problems adjusting to the pace of the game at the outset, and took 24 balls to reach double figures, at which point the required rate was almost 8. Ritchie's brave vigil was ended on 73 and Andy Pimpkins looked to wrap up the tail with a 3-wicket haul.

Matt Smith put in one of his most effective performances of the season and set up a hard-fought win for an under-strength Cricket Web Black. At times Masters XI looked in control of the fixture, but Smith claimed 4 for 37 to effectively win the game for his team.
With the bat, it was Alex Blackman who found heroic form. His 103 was central to a total of 240-4 on a slow pitch. Conditions were never primed for batting, and no one illustrated that better than Cameron Burge, who struggled for 88 balls to score his 38 runs. After he picked out mid-on in his attempts to dispatch Dale Benkenstein, Daniel Speirs arrived to add some semblance of urgency to the innings. Ultimately CW Black scored 124 runs from the final 19.2 overs. Speirs knocked 38 from 42 balls, while Blackman accelerated with 49 from his last 38 balls.
The Blacks then lacked the firepower of Kev Gough with the new ball, and Masters XI stretched to 61 before Lance Klusener fell in the 16th over. Matt Smith had bowled a maiden to start his spell, then the batsmen took him on to score 10 from the first 4 balls of his second over. But he stuck to his task and got Klusener pushing at a ball outside offstump, and later rounded off the over by bowling SS Das for 0. Masters XI should have been in further trouble, but for Smith's drop of Imran Farhat on 30. The miss was somewhat costly, as Farhat went on to score 71, but wickets fell at regular intervals at the other end to keep the Blacks on top. Smith returned to get Farhat caught at long-off, and ended the game in his next over with the wicket of Bond.

Cricket Web Blue were left stunned and defeated by a brilliant batting display from Cricket Web Green. The Greens chased a competitive total of 250-3 with an air of disrespect and effortlessness. Every batsman contributed with the win, and Martyn Corrin hardly broke a sweat in his unbeaten knock of 60 to see the game through.
The match began in rather tame fashion, with a careful opening stand between Rob Bowen and debutant Morgan Burridge. But in the 19th over Jack McNamara livened things up on his return to the team. The left-armer shook off the cobwebs of a long layoff and had Burridge caught at slip for 35 and Dinu DeSilva was brilliantly stumped a ball later by Ben Read. McNamara and his captain, Mitchell, then settled into an excellent spell of pressure, and runs dried up at both ends. Not until Pete Young took on Corrin in his first over did the Blues hint at breaking the shackles. In the next over, however, Bowen was caught at midwicket for 48. The Youngs were united and built steadily into a very effective partnership. After 39 overs the score was 168-3, and the Blues proceeded to score 82 from the last 11 overs. Stephen Young picked up a single in the 49th over to reach his half-century, then Pete Young knocked Forner down the ground to celebrate his hundred in the final over.
While the pitch was still good for batting, the Blue bowlers were particularly poor. CW Green raced to a century in the 15th over and both openers completed fifties soon after. Read chipped a low full toss to extra cover to walk for 64, and Nick Scott was caught in the deep for 63 in the following over. At that stage the Greens needed 107 runs from 168 balls, and any avenue of recovery for CW Blue was far too slim. There was no answer for the Green aggression, until the Greens won the game a ball into the 41st over.

Great work Colts. Disappointed to get a start with the bat and not continue it, but once again made up for it with my bowling. Well done to Spinks as well.
