Disappointing we couldn't close out the game, but it's just another thing we have to improve on. I'm impressed that I managed to make two good scores in consecutive games. Unusual for me.

Cricket Web Green vs Masters XI
5D - Manuel Ramprakash Trophy - CWBCC Stadium

Scorecard
Ball by Ball

A dead track was on hand to welcome Cricket Web Green and Masters XI to the season proper. The CWBCC Stadium was a devastating surface for bowlers, and only 20 wickets fell and almost 1500 runs were scored over a weather affected 5-day fixture. Masters XI started well enough, limiting CW Green to 69-2 at the fall of Thamba Mamesh for 46. But having already dropped Rob Malone jr. on 14, the visitors proceeded to drop the young man four more times over the course of a career-defining innings.

Malone ultimately checked out for 234 in an enormous total of 623-5. He was not the first to his hundred, however, as Andrew Garven rolled back the clock and surged past him to a chanceless 110-ball ton. There was no assistance for any of the Masters XI bowers, but they did not help their cause by falling away in line and length drastically over the course of the day. Jay Gonzalez replaced Garven at 269-3, but there was no slowing of momentum. He romped along without concern to 50 from 37 balls, and looked on course to be the third centurion of the innings, but pushed at a Klusener legcutter to be snapped up by Lara for 95. Malone was on 162 and he marched on fearlessly to take advantage of his sloppy opponents.

The final partnership of the innings pushed on late into day two, truly making Lara regret his decision to bowl on a cloudy first morning. Lezama and Malone put on 183, until the latter was finally held, caught in the deep by Upul Chandana. He left Lezama unbeaten on 105- the perfect start to his season. CW Green sought to make the most of the 30 overs remaining in the day, but were made to wait until the 28th over for the first sights of success. Shiv Sunder Das was caught behind off Mat Mitchell, and the Green skipper would have had Wavell Hinds in his following over, but for the slippy fingers of Cunningham.

It was not a crucial miss, with Hinds falling for 5 soon after, but even so the Greens could not press on and apply pressure. Much like their opponents, the home team struggled in the field, overwhelmed by disheartening conditions and the even less forgiving blade of Lara. The Masters XI captain was determined to make up for the backfiring of his call at the toss, and did so emphatically with 158 unbeaten. His team finished on 446 and comfortably avoided the follow-on, while reducing the deficit to 177 late on the fourth day. Mamesh launched Boyd Rankin into the midwicket stands for six, then was dropped a ball later. He then slashed Bond over point for four, only to be dropped by Ronchi a ball later. It was the last genuine opportunity for the Masters to keep the match alive, but CW Green went to stumps at 49-0.

A small crowd arrived for what was expected to be an uneventful final day. And though Warne shook things up earlier on with 2 wickets, including Malone for 4, the game fairly petered out to a dull finish. Garven added to his first innings ton with 30 not out of 142-4 declared, setting a target of 320 from 64 overs. Imran Farhat raced out of the blocks in the chase, but there was never a genuine challenge of the total, and Mitchell pushed the field back for the last hour and a half to ensure that the result was never in question.

Cricket Web Black vs Cricket Web Red
5D - Manuel Ramprakash Trophy - Pickford Reserve

Scorecard
Ball by Ball

Cricket Web Black relished a crucial win at the toss and set up a commanding victory to open their campaign. Dan Smith called correctly and opted to bowl with a bit of movement on offer for the bowlers. Vindication was swift, as Cricket Web Red crumbled for 215 on a day that saw 13 wickets lost. But conditions firmed up for batting on day two and the Blacks went on to pile up a massive total and put their opponents under pressure on a wearing pitch.

All five bowlers shared the wickets on day one, for CW Black. However, the in-form Nath Patrick was the pick of the bunch, finishing with 4-41 in a tight spell. The Reds had enough starts to avoid being blown away, but managed to survive only 71.3 overs. It was not for lack of spirit, and Muhammad Amir forced that point home with the wicket of Smith, caught at slip, a ball into the CW Black response. The young livewire then returned James Stedman for 15 and the visitors were right back on par. Alex Blackman was out hooking before the close to leave the game delicately poised, with CW Black on 67-3 at stumps.

The sun was out the next day and its glory seemed to power a confident Black middle order in its duties. Amir accounted for Armstrong (43) short of a half-century, but hardly deterred the celebrated Andrew Cloete. He bossed his way to 140 from 192 balls, then left Ash Chaulk in the spotlight. The Black wicketkeeper took his responsibility seriously in conjunction with the lower order. His innings of 135 was spread across partnerships of 71, 134 and 54. The latter came with help from fast bowler Gough, who added the insult of 41 from 25 balls. The Blacks rallied to 529 all out and a lead of 314.

The pressure was on when CW Red began their second innings shortly before tea on day three. Heads offered a chance without a run, but Pickup put it down at mid-off. The patient Reds then pushed into the final session with time a non-issue. Still the Blacks charged in and beat the bat often enough to preclude the result. Patrick and Gough then opened up the innings by removing both openers in quick succession. And by the time stumps were called, CW Red had lost two more wickets, including Dauth for a fighting fifty. Day four kicked off and backs were firmly against the wall for the visiting camp.

First to depart was Chris Dwyer, missing a swinging delivery and struck in front of offstump for 1. From the heights of such an explosive first ball of the day, things settled down with a last ditch rearguard partnership. Kearsley and debutant Singh shone briefly in combination of 58, but there was no miraculous escape. The former chipped a simple return catch to Richards on 31, and the latter was a first victim for Donald in the innings. Only the tail remained to offer some mildly frustrating resistance, but 3 more wickets to Donald wrapped the game up in timely enough fashion.

Cricket Web Red 1st Innings 215 all out
Dwyer 47, Singh 39, Patrick 4-41, Donald 2-36
Cricket Web Black 1st Innings 529 all out

Cricket Web Red 2nd Innings 229 all out

Cricket Web Black won by an Innings and 85 runs.

Cricket Web Blue vs Cricket Web Colts
5D - Manuel Ramprakash Trophy - PDV Dome

Scorecard
Ball by Ball

Cricket was the winner at PDV Dome in the first classic match of the season. Neither team was able to gain a significant lead, and the tight contest went deep in the final day before reaching a thrilling finale. The scenes were much different early on day one, however. After they chose to bat, Cricket Web Colts failed to get the measure of Travis Demeza and crumbled to 118-5.

They required all their batting reserves to battle back to a competitive score. As if stuck in Season XIII, Will Kerr was nerveless and classy and stroked an unbeaten 90 to hold his side together. The solid support he received from the lower order ultimately came undone to the bowling of Manan Shah, but at 254 all out, the Colts felt they were in the game. Their effort the following day was flawed with some sloppy fielding, but despite the fact and a Pete Young half-century, they limited CW Blue to 128-5 in the 52nd over.

The struggle continued for CW Blue when Bowen pushed at a Thomas delivery and was dropped by Weber in the gully. That miss encouraged his typically aggressive style and he was dropped twice more in 81. With Alex Crampton (46), Bowen put on 124 for the 6th wicket and CW Blue threatened to move into a clear lead. But the twists continued to turn and Nick Hancock snatched 3 cheap wickets to hurry the end. CW Blue only led by 39 and almost three days remained in the match.

A messy session ensued and culminated with the run out of Chris Butler for a duck. CW Colts went to lunch at 57-3. They returned in the second session with more care, but after a double strike by Liam Camps, the visitors found themselves in dire straits once more, at 122-5 and with Towns the lone specialist remaining. He was unbeaten on 43 and advanced to a critical half-century and then played the anchor in a partnership of 129 with Wilson. Collins finally split the pair with the wicket of the latter, miscuing a drive. The Colts quickly firmed up again. Hancock was excellent at the crease and guided his colleague to a deserved hundred, which Towns celebrated heartily. When Towns was caught at short leg for 110 he walked off to a standing ovation and left Hancock to add more crucial runs with the tail.

The allrounder was the penultimate wicket for 78 and Colts left the Blues a challenging 339 to win. Time was on their side, but CW Blue looked uncertain on a wearing surface. Wright removed Pete Young (17) cheaply and then Weber snapped two more wickets before tea. The ball turned and the Blues were under pressure when they resumed for the final session on 70-3. The veteran pairing of Camps and Cribb were in for a careful battle after tea and, aside from a tough chance to second slip, they survived with impressive shape.

The final day began with CW Blue needing 205 and 7 wickets remaining in the game. Pressure was evident in both parties and something finally gave when Cribb was lbw to Weber a run short of 50. That lifeline was snatched brutally away by a chancy, attractive Bowen fifty. As in the first innings he responded to the pressure with an array of bold strokes and brought up 50 from 34 balls. Meanwhile Camps ground out a significantly slower half-ton, his contribution to a partnership of 94 runs bearing contrasting styles. The Colts' fortunes were entrusted to the seamers and both Camps and Bowen perished with that throw of the dice. With 72 needed and 4 wickets intact, Sudeep Popat needed to step up in support of the experienced Crampton. He did so with style, cover driving thrice for boundaries, then cutting Thomas over the rope in a game-changing knock of 37. Though he holed out to give Weber and Colts hope, only 9 were then needed. Wright almost swung the game dramatically again, but Rai dropped the last chance of the game, allowing Collins to remain unbeaten. Four overs later, Crampton punched the same bowler down the ground to finish the game fashionably.

Cricket Web Colts 1st Innings 254 all out

Draw first-up

Could have been worse, though. Bit of a non-event for me, didn't get a bat and was poor with the ball.

Oh, and good to see Black looking weaker this season
