Masters XI v Oceania Invitational XI - OD

Scorecard
Ball by Ball

The Masters XI grinded out a 6-wicket win over Oceania Invitational XI on a difficult PDV Dome pitch. With prodigious bounce and movement at their disposal, the Masters XI bowlers tore through the Oceania top order to leave them struggling at 26-4. Tyron Henderson and Boyd Rankin were stunning with the new ball and shared 6 wickets in the innings. Though Chris Nevin (49) and John Rogers (58) battled hard to revive the innings, the Oceania XI managed only 177-9 in their 50 overs.

They struck early to remove Wavell Hinds, chopping a full delivery onto his stumps, but Brian Lara joined Hamish Marshall in getting the Masters XI off to a solid start. Lara (20) began slowly and took 31 balls to hit his first boundary, then lobbed a simple catch back to Andre Adams a ball later. Damien Martyn came to the crease and struggled for 8 runs and then perished to the bowling of Allan Border. But Marshall stood firm and his 74 provided the platform for a relatively trouble-free chase. He was out with 32 runs still needed, and that allowed Dale Benkenstein to compile a comfortable 18 and accompany Inzamam-ul-Haq (37 not out) to the target without further loss.

Oceania Invitational XI 177-9 (50)
JW Rogers 58 (108), CJ Nevin 49 (108), AH Delmont 21 (21)
T Henderson 3-25 (10), WB Rankin 3-54 (10), L Klusener 2-32 (9)

Masters XI 178-4 (41.3)
HJH Marshall 74 (110), Inzamam-ul-Haq 37* (69), BC Lara 20 (32)
AR Adams 2-42 (8.3), RR Sherlock 1-26 (10)

Masters XI won by 6 wickets.

They'll have nothing when it comes to facing some real dev league competition imo. Hamish Marshall won't make it past 50.

Another tremendous hundred by Chris Nevin helped rescue the Oceania XI from defeat against a powerful Masters XI showing. The Masters declared twice for the loss of 12 wickets and set their opponents a target of 632 in the fourth innings of the match. But Nevin scored a stunning 107 and combined with Andrew Delmont (100) in a match-saving partnership of 184.

Hamish Marshall set the game up with another big score - 142 - and four other players scored half-centuries, including the unlikely Mahendra Nagamootoo. A total of 519-8 declared was quickly made more imposing on the afternoon of day two, as Boyd Rankin and Tyron Henderson combined to tear through a tentative Oceania top order. Ultimately all the bowlers chipped in and Oceania XI made just 203 largely due to Matthew Bell's gritty 355-ball innings of 120. Rather than enforce the follow-on, the Masters XI elected to bat again and reshuffled their batting order to accomodate batting practice.

The innings stumbled at 76-3, but Lance Klusener (62 from 81 balls), Dale Benkenstein (101* from 111 balls) and Marshall (74* from 94 balls) counterattacked brilliantly to carry the score to 315-4. The declaration came shortly into the afternoon session and the Oceania XI batsmen set out on their mission to survive more than four sessions for a draw.

Masters XI 519-8 dec.
HJH Marshall 142, ET Smith 73, GO Jones 62, DM Benkenstein 56, MV Nagamootoo 52*
JS Patel 2-73

Oceania Invitational XI 203

MV Nagamootoo 3-21, WB Rankin 3-47

Masters XI 315-4 dec.

MR Gillespie 1-61

Oceania Invitational XI 390-7
CJ Nevin 107, AH Delmont 100, MD Bell 64
T Henderson 2-51, L Klusener 2-61

Yet again Chris Nevin did his best to help his team overcome the Masters XI, but his unbeaten 41 (33 balls) came up just short on a sluggish pitch at the Fardin Qayyumi CC. Nixon McLean and Heath Streak bowled exceptionally at the death of the innings and Oceania Invitational XI lost by 10 runs.

Earlier Wavell Hinds set up a competitive total with an innings of 102 not out. He started slowly and accelerated down the stretch, receiving support from Brian Lara (46) and Geraint Jones (41) primarily. And the total would have been greater than 243-5, but the Oceania bowlers rallied to allow only 25 from the final 5 overs, after 52 had come from the previous 6.

Similarly the Masters XI bowlers applied themselves with the new ball, using the tricky surface to their advantage. After the seamers started well, Shane Warne again struggled to find form, and Border began to establish himself at the crease. But upon reaching 32 he lost concentration and slogged a short ball from Hinds to McLean in the deep. His dismissal actually enabled the most promising period of play for the Oceania batsmen. Rogers and Todd put on a quick 46 for the fifth wicket, but wickets fell too frequently from that point onward. Nevin again attempted to rescue the chase, but for the second time in the series, his best was not enough.

Masters XI 243-5 (50 overs)
WW Hinds 102* (150), BC Lara 46 (49), GO Jones 41 (45)
MR Gillespie 2-39 (10), JS Patel 2-50 (10)

Oceania Invitational XI 233-8 (50 overs)
CJ Nevin 41* (33), CD Cumming 38 (71), JW Rogers 37 (39)
T Henderson 3-47 (10), NAM McLean 3-48 (9)

Masters XI won by 10 runs.
