Press Conference

CW U/19 selector Jack McNamara was not present at the press conference that was called by the PA Rep, and instead a vertically challenged man dressed up as an oompa-loompa stood in front of the microphone and read:

"Ritchie - captain
Donald - vice captain
Arnold
Dunn
Forner
Griffen
Luff
McNamara
Pares
Read
Sharma
Su
Tyson

That is all."

It is assumed by all media outlets that this is to be the CW U/19 squad for the practice matches to take place before the beginning of the highly anticipated Season XIII.

Not sure what gives you that impression, I thought the post had flavour and charm.

Masters XI v Oceania Invitational XI

Scorecard
Ball by Ball

A blistering ton by Chris Nevin was not enough to save the Invitational XI, as they crashed to defeat by 10 wickets at the hands of a strong Masters XI. Nevin played the counterattacking role and even took on Shane Warne in reaching 146 from 173 balls with 13 fours and 2 sixes. His innings lifted the Invitational XI to 360 all out to avoid an innings defeat. But Ed Smith and Wavell Hinds raced to the target of 78 within 14 hours.

The opening act was shared by the West Indian duo of Hinds and Brian Lara. The former scored a solid century at the top of the innings and Lara lit up the CW Oval with his ton costing 113 balls. Lara stormed to 141 before nicking to Nevin behind the stumps. Wickets had tumbled around him in the middle order, but the former West Indies captain proved resolute and stunning in his efforts. At the tail-end Nixon McLean hit four boundaries in 29 to boost the score to 453.

The response was underwhelming in entirety. The new ball was shared by Heath Streak and Boyd Rankin and the two shared 8 wickets in the innings. The Invitational XI crumbled for 170 and only Rogers (39), Nevin (29) and Adams (34) showed any real resistance. In following on it was a better effort. Dale Benkenstein struck twice with 2 wickets after a solid opening stand, but the middle order played solidly in resistance. Warne was particularly ineffective through the 102.4 over innings, usually looking distracted and too often bowling short. His first wicket did not come until the 60th over of the innings, when he bowled Allan Border for 30 before tea. The Australian legend was bowled by a delivery that spun back through the gate.

Nevin marched on with his brave charge and stole some pride back to the side of his team. Unfortunately his bowlers could not do the same as Smith launched 3 early sixes in hurrying the end.

Masters XI 1st innings 453
BC Lara 141, WW Hinds 106, HJH Marshall 74, DM Benkenstein 40
AR Adams 5-91

Oceania Invitational XI 1st innings 170
