enjoying getting back into the swing of things - nothing spectacular from me yet, but picking up a few wickets - time to up the pace before the season starts.

He's correct. There is a program written by Neil that has all the players and randomly generates injuries and times for said injuries. Most the time no one is picked, but some people have been quick unlucky with it.

Cricket Web Black v Masters XI
Pickford Reserve

Scorecard
Ball by Ball

The toss played a crucial role in a stunning result for Cricket Web Black, thrashing the Masters XI by an innings and 53 runs. Dan Smith called correctly and exercised his right to insert the opposition under cloudy skies, on a bouncy surface. His fast bowlers quickly responded, starting with Nick Borcich snapping up Ed Smith in the opening over.

Borcich went on to take 5 wickets before lunch, and could have had Lara too (on 14) had Nath Patrick not dropped a chance at midwicket. The Masters XI went to lunch at 61-6, and in the afternoon session Lara moved to 64 before chipping Dave Richards to mid-off. Richards followed up with the wicket of his opposing spinner Shane Warne (0), but Tyron Henderson and Boyd Rankin showed far more resilience in support of a battling Heath Streak. The Zimbabwean batted through the to end of the innings - 212 - and scored 95 not out in the trying conditions.

By the time CW Black got to the middle there was hardly a cloud in the sky. The pitch was consistent in bounce and the batsmen had the bowlers at their mercy. The openers started with care, but after the shine of the new ball was gone, they began to impose themselves. The opening stand had scaled the heights of 230 when Smith (87) nicked Streak to Geraint Jones down the legside. And a brilliant Warne flipper, followed by a needless run out left the Blacks in a mini-collapse and on 247-3. None outside of the opening partnership managed to cross 40, but as the Blacks batted into the morning of day four, Arnold remained unmoved.

But it was not for lack of effort. The young man was dropped nine times en route to 302 unbeaten, and after he had achieved the milestone, Smith called the innings to a close on 522-9. A lead of 310 and a deteriorating batting surface gave CW Black all the inspiration they needed in the early exchanges of the third innings. Borcich again removed Ed Smith (4) early and Richards spun one past the bat of Hinds (24) after lunch. Then 49-2 became 50-3 as Marshall chopped Richards' arm ball onto his stumps. But the biggest was to come less than 3 overs later. Brian Lara, on 2 looking to turn a ball to the legside, offered a return catch to Neil Pickup, who gleefully accepted it.

A brief revival was staged by Inzamam and Klusener, until Smith called Donald into the attack and was rewarded with the wicket of the latter. The shot that Jones (1) played 4 balls later seemed the meekest of surrender - a top-edged swat off the front foot against Patrick. And Streak was bowled for 2 at 138-7 after tea. Almost four session still remained in the game, but CW Black were faced with the quality of Lance Klusener. In all his left-handed brilliance, and ultimately with the impressive support of Rankin, Klusener pummeled 141 from 193 balls. But even with such a performance the Masters XI only got to 257 all out, supplying CW Black with a memorable win.

Cricket Web Colts v Cricket Web Red
Fardin Qayyumi CC

Scorecard
Ball by Ball

While the Blacks made best use of their home conditions against the Masters XI, Cricket Web Colts got down to business on their home surface and thoroughly outclassed the Reds by 7 wickets. It was a true team effort, with several players putting in their share of effort in the season opener.

Kyle Wright kicked off the good fortune by winning the toss and inserting Cricket Web Red on a quick pitch and with the ball nipping about. Duly Greg Thomas tucked into his role with the first two wickets within the first 5 overs of the match. Mork was comprehensively bowled offstump, beaten by pace, but Dauth was said to have gloved a sharp delivery to slip when the ball had come off his arm. Wickets fell at regular intervals throughout the day, and mostly around Callum Thompson who hit a counterattacking half-century. Thompson topscored with 74 in a total of 188. CW Red had lasted less than 64 overs and CW Colts were left to face an hour and a half of hostile bowling before the close of the first day.

The home side lost two wickets in the process, but young Griffen batted confidently into day two with 32. He added 10 to his overnight score before nicking Clapham to the gully. Clapham then removed Jasotharan (5) and looked to be working himself into a good spell. But in noticing this momentum shift, Will Kerr and Chris Butler took it upon themselves to anchor their team's revival. Butler scored 69 and gave way to Wilson at the top of a dramatic lower order fightback. It was Kerr who grabbed the headlines, finding the boundary 16 times in a career-high 132, but Wilson (25), Hancock (99) and Weber (60 not out) played exceptional hands.

Hancock was unlucky to miss out on his hundred. He was justly given out caught at deep midwicket off Sean Bennett, but his performance deserved the distinction of a second first-class ton. The Colts built their lead to 313 when they were dismissed on the afternoon of day three. The task of saving the game required much patience from CW Red, exemplified by the captain's 247-ball innings of 52. Others batted around him - Dauth scored 56 and Thompson got his second half-ton of the match - but no one played the required big innings. At the tail-end of the innings Clapham had a bit fun with 32 from 56 balls, pushing the target for the Colts past 50. Weber took 4 wickets to round of an award-winning performance.

The Red seamers showed more application the second time around. They managed to snap up the top three before Jasotharan went after Clapham to hurry the end.

Cricket Web Blue v Cricket Web Green
PDV Dome

Scorecard
Ball by Ball

Perhaps it was inexperience, but after an impressive start the Cricket Web Blue pace attack was denied potency by Cricket Web Green in an intriguing drawn match. After making the best use of the surface with the bat, the Blues seemed to be pressing toward a follow-on enforcement, but let the CW Green tail and team off the hook.

Pete Young started shakily in the shadow of Thamba Mamesh after the Blues batted first. Young was outscored 43 to 8 in an opening partnership of 57, then was mistumped off Halsey when he had just 8. The veteran opener, potentially on the verge of retirement, fought on and scrapped his way into some form. He offered chances on 135 and 148, but they were almost forgotten in an exhibition of hard-nosed battling. Relying mostly on the support of Alex Crampton (78), Young scored 249 of a total of 508 all out. His innings lasted an incredible 543 balls. In the exhausting effort Ethan McNamara was outstanding, bowling 35 tireless overs on his first-class debut and taking 4 wickets.

Despite their long run in the field the CW Green openers were refreshingly resilient after a couple of early chances. By stumps they had put on 79 and increased the partnership to 141 on day three. Manan Shah made the first breakthrough for CW Blue. He enticed Rob Malone jr. to drive outside offstump and nick through to Crampton for a debut 74. Nick Scott was caught hooking just before lunch, when the score slipped to 168-2. But in the afternoon session the Greens built solidly on their platform, helped by the Blue fielders dropping Lezama twice. The Green gloveman went to tea with 97 to his name and set his sights on a rare FC hundred. He would have had it too, but for a stunning reverse-swinging delivery from Shah. The ball was nipping around for him, so Shah cashed in to bowl Martyn Corrin for 24 soon after.

Left-armer Collins trapped Raftery lbw, then Sriram chipped in with his first two wickets - Garven (29) and Cunningham (0). Suddenly the CW Green innings had taken a looser shape at 282-7. But the revival was started by Darren Dubb-Lynch (57) and Tom Halsey (24) late on day three, then continued by Xavier Rose (14) on the fourth morning. When the Green innings finally closed, they had avoided the follow-on and drawn to within 125 runs of CW Blue on first innings. The conditions were getting more difficult for batting, and CW Green removed the top four of CW Blue before tea. Camps was caught behind for 27 in the final session, and Crampton joined Fuller in heading to the close on 203-5.

On day five Fuller was allowed to improve his personal tally to 65 and the team lead to 351 before the declaration was made. Travis Demeza took the new ball looking to win his first FC fixture in charge with 78 overs at his disposal. The signs were good early on when Malone slashed the ball to first slip, but the top order was more assertive for CW Green the second time around. A half-century from Scott consumed most of the day, but there were contributions throughout the innings. With 5 wickets down and Raftery (31*) and Dubb-Lynch (29*) at the crease the game was called a draw.

Bah. The Daves need to take full responsibility here.

(OK, not playing a shot to Geg might not have been the cleverest career move either.)

Also, have to say it, well done Black on a thumping win. Shows that it's possible to beat the Masters.
