Colts struggle against Wellington

After a an easy outing against Central Districts the Colts side headed to Wellington with confidence high.
The Colts made several changes and were looking to keep their tour of New Zealand unbeaten. Again the Colts'
captain won the toss, this time it was Towns who called correctly and had no hesitation in batting. Law back
from illness and Griffen were the opening pair. Griffen was the first to go, he was caught at second slip off
the bowling of Shreck which brought Rai to the crease for his first innings of the tour. Both he and Law batted
beautifully as they took the Colts past 100 and to a strong position of 1-102 at lunch. Law was the first to fall
after lunch she was caught behind off Ryder for 60. Captain Towns strode to the crease, also for his first innings
of the tour. Turning the srike over nicely he guided Rai to his half century and it wasn't long before the pair
brought up their half century partnership. The partnership ended on 81 when Rai was cut short of his century,
dismissed for 92. Towns fell 21 runs later just short of his half century and the Colts went to tea at 4-261 with
Bharat and Kerr at the crease. Partnerships were the order of the day for the Colts as Bharat and Kerr put on 90
for the fifth wicket. Kerr doing his best impersonation of Jasotharan as he attacked the Wellington bowling.
Bharat fell just short of her half century, but Kerr passed the mark not long after she was out. The lower order
all contributed as the Colts finished the day in a strong position of 8-398. The colts innings finished all out
for 419 early on the second day.

It was Wellington's turn to bat and they ran into the inform Bochat as he dismissed Woodcock early for three.
Parlane followed soon after as his pads got in the way of a brilliant ball from Thomas and Wellington were 2-46
with both Colts' bowlers firing. Bell's resistance ended soon after as Bochat found an edge for Kerr and
Wellington went to lunch in trouble at 3-50. The majority of the second session belonged to Wellington as Ryder
played with grace and enthusiasm. Towns mixed up his bowlers as Ryder and Parlane took their partnership to 100.
It was Thomas who got the breakthrough his captain was after ripping out Parlane's middle stump on 49. Ryder and
Elliot took Wellington to lunch at 6-168. Ryder and Elliot pushed their partnership beyond 50 as Ryder celebrated
his century. It was Pares and McNamara who combined to reduce the Wellinton late order just before stumps. They
each took two wickets, McNamara removing the dangerous Ryder for 115 along the way. Wellington ended the day at
8-304. Bowden and Quaterman frustrated the Colts early on and saw the lead reduced to under 100. However, Thomas
and Pares combined to finish off the tail and Wellington were dismissed for 361, the Colts were ahead by 58 runs.

Law and Griffen were determined to make the Colt's lead as large as possible and they did their job by combining for
a half century partnership. Griffen was dismissed just before lunch, but the Colts were still in a strong position
as they headed to lunch 1-76. Law and Rai extended the Colts' lead as they also contributed 50 runs together. Law
passed fifty for the second time in the game, but Rai could not do the same as he was dismissed for 22. Law fell
for 82, but Towns and Bharat combined for yet another half century partnership and they took the Colts to tea at
3-212. Towns brought up his fifty just after lunch and just before the players went off for rain. Towns lost
concerntration the first over after lunch as the Colts colapsed losing 6-91 and closing the day 9-321. Thomas was
the hero early on day four as he frustrated the Wellington bowlers and hung around for Wilson to pick up a half
century as the pair combined for 54 runs before Wilson was the last wicket to fall.

Wellington's target was 418 to win and the opening pair put on 25 before Thomas removed Woodcock, However Bell and
Parlane looked comfortable as they guided Wellington to 1-59 at lunch on day four. After lunch the pair brought up
another fifty run partnership, however Parlane fell nine short of a half century as McNamara had success. Another
half century partnership between Bell and Ryder saw Wellington edge close to 200, however, McNamara struck again
just before lunch after Bell raised his bat for his century was caught behind for 101. After lunch their was a
McNamara inspired mini-collapse as he and Bochat reduced Wellinton to 6-230 and the only thing that stood between
the Colts and victory was Ryder who was playing particularly well and looking for his 2nd century in the game.
He found support in Bowden as the pair put on over 100 and Ryder brought up his 100 along the way. Towns was
starting to look worried and changed his bowlers regularly looking for a breakthrough. It was part-timer Law who
raised to the captain's challenge as she dismissed Bowden lbw for 49 just before stumps on day four, with Wellington
requiring 70 runs with three wickets in hand on the last day.

Ryder began the day attacking, but it proved his downfall as he sent a catch back to Thomas, but a sneaky partnership
between Houghton and Quaterman was determined to defy the Colts bowlers. However, it was the Colts who had enough
momentum to close out the match as Bochat and Thomas removed the last two wickets and the colts a hard fought 12 run
win.

The man of the match reward was presented to Ryder for hundreds in both innings.

I can't believe I ate the whole thing
Some good performances in there, the batsmen all chipping in with some handy performances, ditto the bowlers. Thought McNamara was the clear stand out, though.

A win is a win. :) Ryder and Bell provided some very solid resistance, though.

Well done to everyone, it was a wonderful team performance.

Good game for us, everyone contributing something to the game. Personally very happy to get a decent score in first outing as a pure bat, shame I couldn't go the extra eight runs to the century but hey, can't complain too much. Enjoyed batting with Law and Towns :)

I can feel myself emaciating from lack of action...
Amazing win against CD and exciting stuff againt Wellington. I was torn between the two teams but I'm happier with a Colts win than a loss.

Just in case there's any admin stuff etc, I'll be away for the next few weeks without any access to the 'net. Good luck to everyone in the meantime.
