Funny how the highest score made is almost always against a minnow

(or not really surprising I guess)

The 1983 world cup is the strangest. Hadlee being the only bowler of real note getting into the top 5. Kapil's batting stats in that series are over inflated by his ridiculous innings against Zimbabwe.

It's amazing that India won that series with no other batsmen in the top 5.

The most ridiculous stats of all though are Sangakkara's stats from the 2015 tournament. He had cheats turned on or something. Averaging over 100 at a strike rate over over 100 with 4 centuries is an obscenity and probably banned in some places around the world.

The other real surprise was how good the bowling stats were from the top 5 bowlers in 2015. For such a batter dominated tournament, a few bowlers had a really good season.

it's not surprising at all. the good attacks in that cup (aus, nz, sa and india) had no or very few games where they were smashed.

wickets in hand at over 30 = end innings slaughter. keeping wickets in hand against the eventual semi finalists for 30 overs was almost impossible, but the likes of sri lanka and england just didn't have the penetration up front.

aus also had starc at the death, and nz removed the death bowling risks by bowling sides out before the death overs.

I used to think Kumar was an okay ODI player slightly overrated due to his excellent test performances. That one tournament made a huge difference.

No player has managed to crack a bowling and batting top 5(not just within the same tournament, but ever)

Funnily enough I think the blokes who came closest were Steve Waugh(in for his batting in '99, nearly in for his bowling in '87) Chris Harris(in for his bowling in '92, nearly in for his batting in '96) and Lance Klusener(in for his bowling in '99, nearly in for his batting in the same tournament)

If Dev took 1 more wicket at a slightly lower average, he'd have been the first to do so in the same tournament in '83

As a SA supporter what I find interesting when I look at those numbers, is that a few expected SA batsmen are in top 5 run scores, but what you would have considered the SA strength of bowling over the years have only 3 players of Morkel, Klusener and Petersen. With none of Donald, Steyn or Pollock (and a few other first choices) performing in the tournaments as you would want.

First, ha. Forgot he didn't play in 92' and played in 75'. Brain fart.

Still a remarkable stat though isn't it? McGrath too. That's absurd consistency. Can't mark that off as peaking at the right time.

Well you can if you just say that his entire career was his peak.

Is there an easy way on cricinfo to find out the most overall runs and wickets in WC K/O games? So quartefinals and onwards. Or would that take manuel searching.

I assume Ponting, Guptill, Gilly, Sachin and Aravinda would make up the top 5 in runs, not sure about the order though. Someone else could sneak in there however I'm sure Kallis and Mahela played a fair share of K/O games too
