The CWBCC is thrilled to announce the hiring of a new head coach of the Cricket Web XI. Taking over from the disappointing Maxwell Tufnel, Richard Dickinson steps into play. We expect this selection may surprise many as the only coaching credits possessed by Mr. Dickinson are at the Under-11 and Under-13 level with Exeter. Still, we believe that this is a bold step in the right direction and have total faith in his ability and commitment to the cause.
As some insight into the mind of the man, an excerpt from Richard Dickinson's job application form:
The most important thing for a coach is he has to get on with his players. You'll never get anywhere if you allow silly disputes from other walks of life to get in the way of the main objective. That said, a coach must not be a soft touch; anyone who lets his players walk all over him is writing a recipe for a lethargic and carefree approach to cricket - which as we know only too well cannot possibly work. For instance, fielding drills must be sharp, to the point, and not drawn-out so as to encourage joking around. One of the things I tend to be most stern on is no-balls. They're totally unnecessary and one of the things I'm most keen on with bowlers is working on eradicating them totally. Small, light-hearted punishments are a worthwhile tactic, but the single most important thing is to practice hard. It's not difficult - and as with everything, prevention is better than cure. It is essential, meanwhile, for a coach to realise that within his squad there is bound to be a varied complex of characters and personalities, and recognise that each individual requires slightly different treatment, has slightly different needs that must be addressed in slightly different ways. While learning this can be infuriating, once you've got the hang of it, it will make life that much easier. It will, vitally, give you the best chance of getting the best out of each player.
Coaching is like many walks of life - there are things you need to learn, and there are things you either have or haven't - the best coaches are those who command respect without needing to shout and scream. This enables them to give players help without risking planting the seed of dislike in the mind.
Perhaps the most important aspect of coaching is the realisation that cricket, while at the forefront of everyone's minds, is not the single most important thing in anyone's life. Cricket-related matters are the specialist subject, but unless a player is comfortable with all of the more important aspects of his life, he will never be able to give the best to the game at hand. Sometimes, the value of taking the mind off the game is underestimated. A coach must understand and know how best to help a player with personal difficulties.
While training is more than not associated with direct net practice and field-drills, it is also related to fitness maintenance, and a basic understanding of fitness (and a good physio) are an essential part of any coach's repertoire. A coach should do at least a little research on what is best for cricketers, rather than make assumptions based on other walks of life.
Mr. Dickinson will receive various powers within a limit and will fulfil his role as described below:
* Work with the contracted players and those selected in squad.
- comment on their performances, faults in technique etc. and produce a report of each period of training (eg the length of a tour, or a pretour camp).
* Suggest to the Panel players who you think should get a lookin for selection
- NB he will not have an official say on the selection.
* Work alongside the captain to select the CW XI starting XI and work out tactics.
- These tactical considerations include bowling orders, batting orders, changes to batting order in various situations, aggression settings with the ball, bat and in the field.
* Improve the CW XI's Test match record from the dismal 6 wins, 16 losses and 16 draws it currently stands at.
Richard Dickinson will receive an undisclosed amount for his services. He has been notified of the fee, but its disclosure is at his discretion. Work will begin bright and early tomorrow morning at the VB Series training camp held at the CW Oval.
