Week 28: Newport

Super Challenger time! Defending champ is Jefferson Drake, but in his absence a pretty **** field looks to take home a 250. Notable appearance for Li Wang in his first match since like March.

Backing Big Bad Bowenburg.

Nearly typed "Big Band Bowenburg". That'd be a whole different kettle of fish.

Thought this was finishing?

Might've liked a good shot at a title, but I'd probs prefer a mug clay 250....

Why does Newport still have ATP status in this game anyway?

EDIT: Just realised I was playing Davis Cup. Carry on

Why does it still have this status in real life?

Season II Hall of Fame Tennis Championships
PTA 250 - 1st Round - Newport, RI, United States - Grass
  • Teenage sensation Marcuss Deane has continued his impressive grass court run with a straight sets drubbing of little known American qualifier Malcolm Peevy. In a vastly understrength draw, Deane has probably drawn the toughest quadrant but made an impressive start as he won within an hour. Peevy, the World No. 330, had a good qualifying campaign but had no chance as Deane carved through him 6-1, 6-1. The victory sets up a second round meeting with Chinese sixth seed Li Wang. In his first match since a hip injury kept him out of action since February, the former World No. 19 beat a disappointing Harry Thompson 6-4, 6-2.
  • Also into the second round was Rob Bowenburg who dispensed with Chinese Taipei's Tu Haifeng. Bowenburg is one of the pre-tournament favourites after his third round appearance at Wimbledon, and overcame a spirited display from Tu to reach the second round. Bowenburg led 4-1 in the second set, but watched as Tu broke back twice to be level at 4-4. The Lob kicked it up a gear to break immediately and close out the match 6-3, 6-4 before Wednesday's second round clash with Domingo Gómez who beat American wildcard Jesse Adams four and three.
  • Also in the top half, top seed Scotland Rivers started with a victory but had to do it tough against Russian Oleg Puder. Rivers, the World No. 42, had to serve to stay in the set twice against the Russian before taking the tiebreaker 7-0 to take the early lead. Serving first in the second, Rivers had two chances to serve out the match but was broken both times as Puder rallied to keep the match alive. At 5-5 in the tiebreaker, Rivers broke free to convert his first match point and set up a second round meeting with wildcard Justin Williamson 7-6(0), 7-6(5).
  • In the day's most dominant result, World No. 97 Rick Langley tore apart American Samuel Thorpe with a double bagel to record his first love and love victory. Thorpe, ranked 97 places lower than the West CWLander, was abysmal and looked disinterested as he failed to get on the scoreboard. Langley didn't do anything wrong and took all of his chances as he blitzed the American inside three-quarters of an hour to win 6-0, 6-0. He now plays second seed Jason Bradley who beat Marco Pellegrini 6-3, 5-7, 6-1.
  • After beating a top twenty player at Wimbledon, Ishan Narang was the sole CWLand casualty as he was upset by wildcard entrant Jack Griffen. Narang showed signs of a long month as he struggled to break the American; his own serve flagging as the match progressed. Narang led by a break in the third, but couldn't hold again as Griffen snatched a surprise 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 win over a top 100 player.
  • The only seed to fall was Argentinian seventh seed Paolo Mandonna who had an absolute Barry Crocker in a 1-6, 0-6 loss to Adam Murray.
  • Seeded players out: Paolo Mandonna.

Season II Hall of Fame Tennis Championships
PTA 250 - 2nd Round - Newport, RI, United States - Grass
  • Just when you think he has turned a corner, fourth seed Rob Bowenburg was sensationally bundled out in straight sets in Newport, RI by World No. 132 Domingo Gutiérrez Gómez of Puerto Rico. The World No. 52, having played a heap of tennis in the past two weeks, struggled for rhythm against the defensive Gómez who capitalised on the many mistakes of the West CWLander in a straight sets win. Bowenburg did lead 4-3 with a break in the second set, but was broken back immediately by Gómez who stole the match in a tiebreaker 7-5 to set up a quarterfinal with Dieter Bonhof 6-4, 7-6(5).
  • In the same section, Marcuss Deane got off to a great start against sixth seed Li Wang before being ousted in three sets. Picking up where he left off on Monday, Deane put a breadstick on the Chinese player who still looked rusty in just his second match back. After that, though, the big forehand began to cause difficulties for the teenager who was forced into playing defensive tennis as his movement was exposed. Breaking early in both sets, Li completed a fantastic turnaround to move into the quarters 1-6, 6-4, 6-3.
  • He will play top seed Scotland Rivers who also did it tough in a 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 win over Justin Williamson. Williamson, ranked No. 168 in the world, played out of his skin in the second set as he cracked twice as many winners as the dynamic West CWLander. Unfortunately, he could only keep up that pace until 5-5 in the third as Rivers, having saved six break points for the set, finally showed his class to edge out the American in three sets.
  • Finally, second seed Jason Bradley prevailed in a tough match against Rick Langley. Langley, who was so good on Tuesday, struggled against the increased calibre of opponent as Bradley showed great serve-and-volley to counter Langley's baseline game. The West CWLander, in a 4-6, 4-6 defeat, shows he needs to add more strings to his bow as Bradley, although lacking the power of the Westerner, had too much guile and too many tricks to be beaten.
  • Seeded players out: Rob Bowenburg; Sam Lazzeri.

Season II Hall of Fame Tennis Championships
PTA 250 - Quarterfinals - Newport, RI, United States - Grass
  • Top seed Scotland Rivers has crashed out of the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in Newport after a three-set loss to impressive sixth seed Li Wang. After nearly six months out of tennis, Li has come through two tough three-set matches against top hundred players as he looks to rebuild his shattered ranking which sits at No. 77. In a tight second set, Li had three set points returning at 6-5. Rivers survived that, though, and looked to have crippled the Chinese player as he took the set in a tiebreaker 7-4. After moving ahead 4-2 it looked rosy for Rivers, but Li managed to claw that break back and turn the tables on Rivers by overpowering him with some big groundies. Both players went for their shots, and this time Rivers could not survive as he fell out of the tournament in three sets. With four games on the trot, Li secured a semifinal meeting with Domingo Gutiérrez Gómez 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-4.
  • In other semifinal, fifth seed Randy Bruce meets unseeded Australian Adam Murray after both players knocked off higher ranked opponents.
  • Seeded players out: Wayne Boyd; Jason Bradley; Scotland Rivers.

  • Rain forced the semifinals and final onto the Sunday in a day littered with surprises. First, fifth seeded local Randy Bruce gave up a set-to-love lead as he was beaten by unseeded Aussie Adam Murray 3-6, 6-1, 6-1. • Seeded players out: Randy Bruce; Li Wang.
  • After looking cooked in the first set, Domingo Gutiérrez Gómez claimed his first title in the final with a 0-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Adam Murray.
  • Seeded players out: None.
