  • The seeds keep on tumbling in Florida as 28th seed Heath Davis came from a set down to oust Indian Wells champion Sven Oxenstierna in an all-FRC third round contest. Davis knew that he needed a quarter final appearance at least to defend his fourth round points from last season, but wasn't anywhere near it early as the World No. 4 dominated the first set. Dropping the first set 2-6 seemed to kick Davis into gear, though, and the Westerner started playing his shots and got his first serve percentage up at least ten points. Oxenstierna, meanwhile, wilted under the shot-making pressure from Davis and handed him a service break on a platter with two unthreatening second serves which were struck for clean winners. That earned Davis the second set, but Oxenstierna would not be shaken off as the match entered a third. Davis secured a 2-1 lead thanks to a break in the third game, but blew a 40-15 lead to give Oxenstierna a path right back to 2-2. The two traded holds of serve as the match looked destined to be decided in a tiebreaker before Oxenstierna gave Davis a sniff at 5-6 0-30. While Oxenstierna drew level on serve, he horribly misjudged a reaching volley from the lower ranked player - leaving a ball that just clipped the back corner of the court. That gave Davis a match point, but he needed a second one to secure a 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 upset as Oxenstierna sent a forehand into the netting. Davis equals his performance from last year by moving to the fourth round (where he lost to Almen Benaglio), but must win through to the quarters to avoid dropping points. On a brighter note, his opponent won in a huge boilover as Danijel Micic, the 18th seed, again lost his temper in a frustrating 4-6, 4-6 loss to Tal Cohen. The Israeli has come a long way from his form late last season which saw him be rarely competitive on the PTA Tour.

  • After a dynamite second round win against Dwayne Murdoch, unseeded West CWLander Scotland Rivers was blown away by 19th seed Diego Hurtado. Rivers came in rating himself a big chance to knock off the aggressive Colombian, but met him on a bad day as the South American struck winners at ease. He was in one of those moods, but Rivers perhaps helped him by foolishly giving him too many chances on the forehand side. Hurtado needed three match points, but the result was never in doubt as he took a 6-2, 6-4 win. His form looks very dangerous, and he'll put it to the test against seventh seed József Boros. Boros came back from a disastrous first set to defeat Sergio Joaquín 0-6, 6-3, 7-5.

  • Elsewhere, the top two seeds are out before the fourth round as Daniel Páez Blanco was beaten 2-6, 6-7(8) by 30th seeded teenager Zhijun Sun. Blanco's loss leaves many believing he might well have come back too early as two third round exits in two tournaments have been characterised by limited movement and surprisingly inconsistent groundstrokes. With huge points to depend in the clay season, Blanco has a big job ahead of him to get himself right.

  • Rob Bowenburg & Jarkko Maxum have made a winning start to their doubles campaign with a dominant 6-3, 6-2 win over Artem Krohmal & Merab Shvelidze. The East Europeans were smashed by Gai/Lu in Sunrise last week at the semi final stage, and looked no better here as the CWLanders were clinical in victory. They move onto a bigger test in the second round against sixth seeds Tal Cohen & Raz Teper who eased past Gryzlov/Malachenko in their first round contest.

  • While no CWLanders were in singles action, there were some surprisingly results on Monday's play. In a rematch of their third round clash in Indian Wells, World No. 3 Radek Špidlá reaffirmed his favouritism by avenging his California loss by beating Becker Haas in another hotly contested match 6-4, 7-5. Elsewhere, Indian Wells finalist Darcy Cowan followed the winner out of the draw as he was beaten 4-6, 6-4, 3-6 by Morgan Carter, while Jason Hall's conqueror Ivars Emsis was humbled in a dull serve-fest by 31st seed David Champion 7-6(7), 6-7(4), 7-5.

  • Heath Davis is getting good match practice ahead of his fourth round appearance tomorrow as he and partner Jojo Mustard survived a tough three-set affair against Morton Blundell & Oneil Stewart. The West CWLanders had six different match points in the third set before they finally converted to secure a confident 6-4, 3-6, [12-10] win. It was a much sterner test than their dominant first round win, and holds them in good stead for a quarter final showdown with Henson/Henson or Machado/Rodrígues.

  • Davis' fourth round opponent Tal Cohen continued his good form in Florida as he and Raz Teper ousted Rob Bowenburg & Jarkko Maxum. The Trans-CWLand team, who were so good in the first round, played unsophisticated tennis against the Israeli duo and were punished for key mistakes on big points. Cohen and Teper, whose form has blown hot and cold for nearly a year now, were calm and confident at the right moments as they took all four break point opportunities to seal a 6-2, 6-3 win.

  • They play fourth seeds Jefferson Drake & Martti Korpinen who were taken to three sets for the second time - this time against Gai Kai & Lu Xun. The Chinese pair took the title in Sunrise, and the 6-2 scoreline in the second set suggested that they'd romp it home in the match tiebreaker. But after opening up a 4-1 lead, the Chinese duo were reeled in by the explosive forehands of Drake and some quick thinking from Korpinen at the net as the Easterners escaped with a 7-6(3), 2-6, [10-7] win.

Heath Davis has missed a big opportunity to advance to the quarter finals of a Masters Series event as he was upset in straight sets by giant killer Tal Cohen.

Davis, who was fresh off one of the biggest wins of his career against Indian Wells champ Sven Oxenstierna, came out in the hot Florida sun with more court time than his Israeli opponent despite playing one fewer match. But scheduled to play first on the Tuesday, Davis looked lethargic after a drawn out doubles affair yesterday. Where he served brilliantly against Oxenstierna, here he was at least 10 km/h slower while his first serve percentage dipped.

Cohen gave him opportunities with four break points in the first set, but Davis only took advantage of one and was left to battle with some aggressive returning from Cohen who looked more than comfortable to stand up to his second serves and look to come forward at all opportunities.

Davis gave Cohen seven break points in the first set, and that was all the World No. 42 needed for two service breaks to take the first set 6-4. Davis, who was on the receiving end of a worse scoreline in his first set against Oxenstierna, needed a much better start to the second set but sought assistance from the trainer between sets and was obviously less than comfortable on his right ankle.

Nevertheless, he had the chance for a 2-0 lead as Cohen was wrongfooted by a deep forehand and sent the ball flying into the crowd. Despite that hiccup, Cohen held serve through some clinical volleying and then took a 4-3 lead by earning a big break of serve. That seemed to cripple Davis who has no way back from there as Cohen took four games in a row to secure a dominant 6-4, 6-3 victory.

Cohen now plays his fourth seeded player in a row after seventh seed József Boros looked in imposing form as he touched up Colombian Diego Hurtado. Like Cohen, Boros has dropped just one set this week - his first - which he was bagelled in. While Hurtado looked so strong in his first two matches, he offered nothing here and was sent packing 3-6, 0-6.

PTA Masters Series 1000 - 4th Round (Tuesday) - Miami, FL - Hard (Outdoors)

  • For the first time, three Hungarians will be competing in the quarter finals of a main tournament after Boros was joined on the winner's list by János and Zoltán Varga. János produced the biggest upset of the day as he ousted sixth seed Radivoj Daneu in three sets despite an awful start. The defending champion took the first set 6-1, but was outlasted by the Hungarian who compounds the Serbian's poor form which is almost certain to see his ranking fall to at least No. 9 next week. Varga's older brother Zoltán also came from a set down as he saved three match points to beat Australian David Champion. Champion's style has suited the fast Miami courts, but he couldn't make the most of his opportunities as the Wimbledon semi finalist advanced 5-7, 6-2, 7-6(2).

  • He plays tenth seed Illya Altman who has quietly gone about making a dominant return from injury with a 6-1, 6-3 thrashing of eighth seeded Dane Rasmus Olesen. Also through were third seed Radek Špidlá who remains a big favourite following a tight 6-4, 7-6(5) win over Lari Färkkilä. Špidlá plays Björn Donaldson who ousted 26th seeded local Morgan Carter in the night session 7-6(1), 6-3 in a very surprising result.

  • Former World No. 5 Zhijun Sun seems to be making a run at the right time as he came from a set down to beat Pierre L'Estrange 5-7, 7-5, 6-1. Zhijun also had to save a match point in the second set, but after doing that cruised past the Frenchman in three to set a quarters showdown with János Varga.

  • Top seeds Hugh James & Ralph Robinson were beaten in three sets by French duo Jean-Alain Depuis & Patrick Pascaul 6-4, 6-7(3), [10-4]. The two-time Grand Slam champs saved three match points in the second set, but were still blown away in the third by the unseeded pairing.

  • In one of the most unlikely wins of the year, Israel's Tal Cohen has continued his amazing run in Miami by knocking out a fourth straight seeded opponent - this time World No. 7 József Boros. Despite three straight set wins over seeded opposition, Cohen was a distinct underdog against the red hot Hungarian. But in a tough match, the Israeli serve-and-volleyer moved through to a PTA Masters 1000 semi final with an amazing 7-6(1), 6-4 upset. It is a big improvement for Cohen who was forced to qualify last season, and lost first round to Anothy Ficher 4-6, 6-1, 2-6.

  • He plays Chinese 30th seed Zhijun Sun who beat the other Hungarian in Wednesday's quarter final action János Varga. Varga, who upset defending champion Radivoj Daneu yesterday, put up a fine fight as he saved match points at 3-5, 4-5 and in the tiebreaker in the second set, but Zhijun managed to prevent the match from going to a third set as he secured a 6-3, 7-6(7) win to go one further than his quarter final last season. There he was beaten by Jason Hall 4-6, 3-6, but with a win over Daniel Páez Blanco the Chinese teenager has every reason to feel confident of a maiden PTA Masters 1000 final.

  • In a distinctly bizare doubles quarter final, fast-starting West CWLanders Heath Davis & Jojo Mustard have been sensationally beaten in three sets by eighth seeded Brazilian duo Carlos Machado & Dênis Rodrígues. The second seeds and two-time Grand Slam champions asserted their favouritism early as they raced through the opening set to love and were already looking at a semi final place. But in a dramatic turnaround, the Brazilian pair stuck with the second seeds and snatched a shock break of serve at 4-3 in the second set before Machado serve it out to send it to the roulette of the third set tiebreaker. Davis and Mustard were still fancied to take the victory, but lagged behind the Brazilians who made very few errors in relation to the number flowing from the favourite's racquets. They brought up a match point at 9-8, but a big ace from Heath Davis saved that one. But after the change of ends, the big man double faulted to hand the Brazilians a match point on the Rodrígues racquet. His second serve down the tee brought a framed backhand from Mustard and an easy put away from Carlos Machado as the eighth seeds advanced to the semi finals 0-6, 6-3, [11-9]. They play the winner of tomorrow's quarter final between Cohen/Teper and Drake/Korpinen.

  • In tomorrow's first semi final, Wimbledon champions Sandro Bachunelli & Hicham Hadir meet Diego Hurtado & Paolo Mandonna. Both teams were on-site registrations here in Miami, and both had to come from a set down to win. Bachunelli and Hadir ousted Jean-Alain Depuis & Patrick Pascaul 3-6, 7-6(5), [10-8] while the South Americans stunned Indian Wells champs Hayden & Ross Onwye 5-7, 7-5, [10-4].

  • The surprises kept rolling in Miami as fifteenth seed Zoltán Varga ended the tremendous run of form of tenth seed Illya Altman in straight sets. The crowds were hoping for a cracker between the two in-form players, and it looked like they'd get it early as both players looked in prime touch with some typically clean hitting and some lengthy rallies. But it was Altman who snapped first as Varga had two break point opportunities at 4-3 and took the first with a clean forehand winner off his second serve. He continued his fantastic serving this tournament to take the first set 6-3, and set about finishing Altman early. It was the Ukrainian, though, who struck first in the second as he handed Varga just his second break of the tournament to take a 2-0 lead. But immediately the Hungarian broke back, and began to control the rallies against the World No. 10. Altman tried to keep with the Hungarian, but his chances went as he gave him two match points on his own serve. While Altman saved one, his serve failed him and he bowed out in an inglorious fashion with a double fault.

  • Varga plays third seed Radek Špidlá who continues to look scratchy but won in three against the talented Swede Björn Donaldson. It seemed that yet another boilover could be on the cards as Donaldson took the first set 6-4, but Špidlá began to get on top of his younger opponent and made it second Miami semi final in as many years with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win.

  • Incidentally, Špidlá and Varga met in the semi final stage at Wimbledon last year and produced an epic. It was the Czech player who escaped with a 5-7, 7-6(2), 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 win before blowing his favouritism in the final to be stunned by Darcy Cowan in straight sets.

  • Seeded players out:
    Illya Altman.
  • Meanwhile, it is certainly Tal Cohen's week as tomorrow he will play in a singles and doubles semi final after he and Raz Teper easily defeated fourth seeds Jefferson Drake & Martti Korpinen. Cohen and Teper haven't been troubled in a set this week, and that continued against the East CWLanders who put in a distinctly disappointing performance. Neither player served well and gave too many opportunities to the Israelis who made the most of most of them to produce a 6-2, 6-2 win. They tomorrow play eighth seeds Carlos Machado & Dênis Rodrígues for a place in Saturday's final.

  • Incidentally, that final will be against unseeded South Americans Diego Hurtado & Paolo Mandonna after they breezed past fifth seeds Sandro Bachunelli & Hicham Hadir 7-6(4), 6-1.
