Yessssss!

Should be able to make it to the 4th, but a match-up against Blanco there could be tough...

Disappointed to worsen my bagel record. However, good to get through the match. Will be tough going, especially with a packed doubles schedule, but hopefully can go deep in both competitions.

Second Round (Sunday) - Indian Wells, CA (United States) - Hard (outdoors)

Men's singles (Seeds - Finals - Section 1 - Section 2 - Section 3 - Section 4 - Section 5 - Section 6 - Section 7 - Section 8)
Men's doubles (Seeds - Finals - Top Half - Bottom Half)

  • World No. 55 Scotland Rivers has let a golden chance slip in his second round clash in Indian Wells as he was beaten in straight sets by World No. 5 Sven Oxenstierna. In a competitive fixture, Rivers was in prime position as he brought up a 5-3 lead - bringing up three break points and smashing the third round right down the line on his forehand side to pull off an awesome winner. But serving for the set, Rivers could not get the job done as he botched two set points with bad unforced errors to allow Oxenstierna back into the set. After his sluggish start in his first match since a shock second round exit in Acapulco, Oxenstierna was lucky to escape with the break but began to lift his game as he secured four games on the trot to take the set 7-5. Where Rivers was taking it to Oxenstierna in the first set, his confidence fell considerably in the second set as Oxenstierna began to dominate rallies as he found his stride. Rivers managed just two games as Oxenstierna secured two breaks of service to charge into a third round clash with 27th seed Morgan Carter 7-5, 6-2.

  • Mat Mitchell's last encounted against a top thirty player came in Johannesburg, and there Zhijun Sun dealt with him brutally. Here, though, he produced a much-improved effort against 22nd seed Patrick Pascaul but fell away as the match went to a second set. Mitchell matched it with the free-wheeling Pascaul in the first, but at 5-6 gave Pascaul his first two break (and set) points with a horrible forehand error. Pascaul, who had so far been struggling to really get a look at the solid Mitchell serve, benefitted from a double fault to clinch the first 7-5. But after a solid first set, Mitchell struggled to maintain the pressure on Pascaul and found himself a break down early. He had his chances to get back into the set, but was beaten to the punch by some great pressure winners from Pascaul who closed off all his chances and surged into the third round 7-5, 6-1. Despite the loss, Mitchell completed a successful week in North America.

  • In the biggest upset of the tournament so far, thirteenth seed Dwayne Murdoch was stunned in a straight sets boilover against Swedish qualifier Henrikk Henrikkson. Ranked No. 131 in the world, Henrikkson got off to a quick start and despite always being expected to fall away did well enough to secure a 6-2, 7-6(6) upset. Elsewhere, 31st seed Zhijun Sun was overawed by Ivars Emsis' monster serve 4-6, 2-6, and fifteenth seed Oneil Stewart was beaten by Hugh James 7-5, 3-6, 3-6.

  • Seeded players out:
    Dwayne Murdoch;
    Oneil Stewart;
    Zhijun Sun.
  • Due to a scheduling ****-up, there were no doubles matches today.

  • Seeded players out: None.

Damn, disappointing. Really looked forward to stretching it out to a third, but couldn't manage it. Well done to the Ox.

Third Round (Monday) - Indian Wells, CA (United States) - Hard (outdoors)

Men's singles (Seeds - Finals - Section 1 - Section 2 - Section 3 - Section 4 - Section 5 - Section 6 - Section 7 - Section 8)
Men's doubles (Seeds - Finals - Top Half - Bottom Half)

  • 23rd seed Jojo Mustard is through to the fourth round at Indian Wells as he continued the poor run of form for Australian 33rd seed David Champion. Champion made it through his first match by the skin of his teeth, but was totally outmatched against the fast-improving Mustard who raced through the first set of the match in forty minutes. The Australian has slumped to No. 37 in the world, and offered little against Mustard as he only brought up one break point all match. That cost him as his serving was nowhere near its best; Mustard taking three of thirteen break points to secure a big 6-2, 6-3 victory. He'll still have some work to do in the fourth round against sixth seed Darcy Cowan who monstered Italy's Antonio Bachunelli 6-4, 6-0.

  • Tenth seed Jefferson Drake looks a good chance of making the quarter finals as he produced a good victory over Colombia's Diego Hurtado. Hurtado has not achieved great results on the hard courts this season, but matched it with the East CWLander who was still smarting from a three-set battle in the second round. Whilst Hurtado was causing Drake many troubles with the big wind-up forehand, he was still making too many errors and that cost him as Drake snatched a second break of the set to secure a 6-5 lead. With that, Drake served out the set to fifteen to secure the decisive early lead. Hurtado needed a better start in the second set but did not get it; Drake surging to a 5-0 lead and in sight of the fourth round. Hurtado avoided the bagel with a break of serve to draw back to 1-5, but could not find his rhythm on serve as he served his fifth double fault to hand Drake a 7-5, 6-1 win. Drake now plays the Ukraine's Viktor Vuriak after the left-hander stunned seventh seed József Boros 6-3, 7-5.

  • After a fourth round appearance at the Australian Open, East CWLand surprise packet Spas Delev has continued his awesome form to make it to the same round in Indian Wells after he thrashed Finland's Lari Färkkilä 6-1, 6-2. In fairness, it was plainly obvious that Färkkilä was not one hundred per cent after his tough second round win over fourteenth seed Randy Smeltz but Delev was in fine form as he wrapped up victory inside of an hour. Delev let rip with thirty-two winners - the majority on his backhand side - and also added to that with six aces in a thorough domination of the Fin. Färkkilä, meanwhile, struck just eight winners in a defensive display as Delev surged to a big win. He avoided a showdown with second seed Daniel Páez Blanco after the World No. 2 was dumped out by World No. 51 Björn Donaldson. Like Delev, Donaldson hadn't dropped a set this week and took advantage of Blanco who was plainly not completely match fit yet as he secured a 7-6(5), 7-6(2) victory.

  • Seeded players out:
    Antonio Bachunelli;
    Daniel Páez Blanco;
    József Boros;
    David Champion;
    Ivan Genov;
    Diego Hurtado.
  • Top seeded doubles pairing Hugh James & Ralph Robinson have surged into the quarter finals of the doubles draw as they accounted for CWLand duo Rob Bowenburg & Jarkko Maxum. The local duo secured a 6-2, 6-3 victory but did not have it all their way as Bowenburg and Maxum created opportunities. After dropping the first set convincingly, the unseeded duo had a 2-0 lead and two break point chances to go ahead the double break. But they couldn't get either as they were met with near unreturnable serves from Robinson who then set about being unstoppable at the net to level the scores at 2-2. The CWLanders stuck close to be 3-3, but again were undone by the more seasoned pairing who surged from a level score to lead 5-3 as James took a half-volley from his toes to find the outer line; beating Maxum at the net to secure a massive break. That gave the top seeds a chance to serve it out, and they had no difficulty as they secured the straight sets win.

  • Second seeds Heath Davis & Jojo Mustard withdrew from their second round clash with Eric & Rick Henson due to Davis having to catch a flight for his first round clash in Sunrise tomorrow.

  • Seeded players out:
    Tal Cohen &
    Raz Teper;
    Heath Davis &
    Jojo Mustard.

Stoked! Huge chance of the quarters with Blanco out, but overcoming Donaldson still won't be easy.

  • World No. 5 Sven Oxenstierna will face the Danijel Micic juggernaut in the fourth round this Wednesday after he prevailed in a hotly-contested affair against 27th seed Morgan Carter. Oxenstierna was impressive in his first match on Saturday, but was made to work much harder against the determined local. Carter needed to improve on his performance against Mark Harmel in the second round, but struggled to hold serve in an error-ridden first set. Oxenstierna, too, was not finding his best form early as he was broken twice before finally securing the opener 7-5. Carter lifted in the second and brought up two break points at 2-1 in the second. Oxenstierna saved the first by dominating the rally to force the error, but could not return the game to deuce as his forehand clipped the net and bobbled out of court. That gave Carter a set-winning lead and pumped the pressure right back on Oxenstierna who has semi final points on the line here in Indian Wells. Both players continued to give chances on serve in an ebbing-and-flowing third set, but in the tiebreaker it was The Ox who converted his first match point with a cross-court backhand to move into the fourth round 7-5, 3-6, 7-6(4). He now plays 21st seed Danijel Micic who continued his awesome form this week by flowing twelfth seed Juan Moreno off the court for a 6-1, 6-1 victory.

  • In the big upset, Becker Haas went from saving two match points against qualifier Tu Haifeng to stunning World No. 3 Radek Špidlá. The 29th seed has had a poor start to the season, but his shock 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(5) victory might very well put his season back on track as he surged into the fourth round. He plays twentieth seed and defending runner up Almen Benaglio who continued his reversal of form with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Hugh James. Meanwhile, big serving Latvian Ivars Emsis went close to ousting eighth seed Rasmus Olesen, but blew a 6-3, 3-0 lead and then a 5-3 lead in the third to fall 6-3, 4-6, 6-7(4) to the Dane.

  • Seeded players out:
    Morgan Carter;
    Tiago Matías;
    Juan Moreno;
    Patrick Pascaul;
    Radek Špidlá.
  • In the surprise of the day, Cherbourg champions Mikel Fosdike & Christian Mary made the most of they recent form on the Challenger circuit to come from a set down to beat seventh seeds Andrej Konc & Evgeniy Maximov. The French duo dropped the first set 4-6, but came back to win 4-6, 6-4, [10-7]. Elsewhere, Aussie duo Toby Brookes & David Champion made up for disappointing singles exits to make the quarter finals of the doubles with a 2-6, 7-6(2), [10-8] win against Ashim & Seby Kumar.

  • Seeded players out:
    Andrej Konc &
    Evgeniy Maximov.

Fourth Round (Wednesday) - Indian Wells, CA (United States) - Hard (outdoors)

Men's singles (Seeds - Finals - Section 1 - Section 2 - Section 3 - Section 4 - Section 5 - Section 6 - Section 7 - Section 8)
Men's doubles (Seeds - Finals - Top Half - Bottom Half)

Seven of the eight fourth round matches were on show in a jam-packed Wednesday schedule.

  • In one of the most heavily anticipated round of 16 clashes, fifth seed Sven Oxenstierna of the Federal Republic of CWLand came from a set down to stun the in form Danijel Micic in three sets on Centre Court. Micic had dropped just two games in his fifty-three minute rout of Juan Moreno on Tuesday, and in a confident start had Oxenstierna on the ropes early with a break of serve. The Serbian, who did not play here last year, was eating up his opportunities as Oxenstierna gave him too many chances with the backhand down the line which were invariably answered by an answering forehand. But after dropping the first set 3-6, Oxenstierna smartened up considerably and held a break lead on two occasions before Micic replied with his own. But at 5-5, Oxenstierna finally took the third of his chances of the game to outgun Micic at the net by putting away an easy smash for the 6-5 lead. This time he served the set out, and an obviously frustrated Micic received a code violation for a broken racquet and threatening gestures made to a linesman. Micic continued his tirade between the sets to the chair umpire, whilst the calm Oxenstierna focussed his attention on the match. Micic, however, could not channel his aggression which was only increased by a string of unforced errors that had him 0-4 down. He had two chances to get on the board and could not take them as Oxenstierna claimed eight points in a row to steal a 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 victory and a quarter final spot on Friday. Micic delivered a token handshake after the match with all involved, but was scathing in his post-match press conference. Oxenstierna, meanwhile, received a boost with another big threat in season I finalist Almen Benaglio being ousted by German 29th seed Becker Haas 2-6, 4-6. Haas, whose record on hard courts coming into the match was a lacklustre 5-6, made a slight turnaround in form with a consolation win in the Davis Cup against Illya Altman before stunning World No. 3 and Oxenstierna's bogey man Radek Špidlá in three sets.

  • 23rd seed Jojo Mustard could not join his West CWLand compatriot in the quarters as he was handily beaten by sixth seed Darcy Cowan. After a setback in North Carolina a fortnight ago, Cowan is building nicely in Indian Wells and proved too good for Mustard in his 6-3, 6-4 victory. Mustard, who produced his best performance in the US this season at Memphis, could not consistently match it with the World No. 6 and struggled to provide chances on serve with just three break point opportunities. All of those were closed off by raking first serves as Cowan advanced to a showdown with defending champion Radivoj Daneu who continued his streaky form with a 7-5, 6-7(3), 6-3 win over Dutchman Maarten Berg.

  • The giant-killing run of Björn Donaldson came to a surprising end in the round of 16 today as East CWLander Spas Delev made Indian Wells his best career performance with a straight sets upset. Delev, who made it to the fourth round at the Australian Open, produced undoubtedly his best tennis of the week against a proven opponent in a 7-5, 6-3 win. Donaldson started strongly to be a break ahead, but was chased down by Delev who let loose with thirteen first set winners to take it 7-5. Donaldson dropped a set in his first match of the week and came back to win, but had no such luck here as the confident Delev continued to look good with his power game and moved into the quarters with a straight sets win. He plays compatriot Jefferson Drake who won by walkover against Viktor Vuriak.

  • Seeded players out:
    Almen Benaglio;
    Danijel Micic;
    Jojo Mustard;
    Rasmus Olesen;
    Zoltán Varga.
  • The biggest doubles result was the straight sets upset of eighth seeds Ion Andueza & Sanchez Emelio by wildcards Eric & Rick Henson. The Hensons, yet to drop a set this week, were irresistable as they made up for disappointing singles campaigns with a 7-5, 6-4 win. They now play Croatia's Miroslav Brdar & Nilikar Midid who upset Morton Blundell & Wayne Boyd 6-4, 6-2.

  • Seeded players out:
    Ion Andueza &
    Sanchez Emelio.
Will update the links later.

Delev-Drake will be fun.

Less so playing Haas, need to lift to avoid the usual creditable but pointless quarter-final.
