Heilbronn Challenger I
First Round - Heilbronn
Singles

It was a great first day at Heilbronn for competitors from the former CWLand Republic as a number of the seeds were dumped out of the tournament unceremoniously.

  • The result of the day was clearly enjoyed by the East CWLander Mat Mitchell. On paper, he had a tough draw against Anvar Juraev, the 4th seed. Mitchell has been in decent form at the start of this season, with deep progression in a couple of Challenger tournaments. Juraev was blown off court in just over an hour by a rampant Mitchell. Mitchell breezed through the first, barely breaking a sweat, and after an early break in the 2nd, was content to sit back on his serve as Juraev proved incapable of finding a way through. 6 - 1, 6 - 4.
  • Fellow Democratic Republic player Matt Bre found himself seeded 5th for the tournament, so he would have expected an easy victory against Swiss qualifier Marcel Kurz. Bre did not get the easy ride he wanted, as Kurz proved to be a tenacious competitor. Bre took an early break in the first, but eased off far too much and was broken by Kurz to level the set at four a piece. The wake up call for Bre came too late to save the set, and Kurz held his own serve to love and took advantage of a stuttering Bre service to take it 6 - 4. Bre came to the party hard in the 2nd, but again Kurz proved to have the game to keep him in the match. With the Bre serve struggling for accuracy, Kurz pushed a 3 consecutive Bre service games to deuce. Bre's form, however, saw him retain his serve on all three occasions, and helped him earn a break from Kurz. That was enough to push the match to a third, where Bre took an early break from the distraught German. Bre had learned well enough from the first set not to ease up the pressure and was able to absorb all that the German was willing to throw at him to advance 4 - 6, 6 - 3, 6 - 4
  • Jake Loughman had endured a tough route to qualification for Heilbronn, but that match fitness allowed him to ease to a victory over Wildcard Mario Beyer. A brutal first set was brought to a contraversial end with the Beyer serve sitting on advantage to Loughman, and on a second serve, a heckler from the crowd distracted the German and his 2nd serve went sailing out to had Loughman the set on a plate. Beyer lost his temper and control and lost the 2nd with barely a whimper. 6 - 4, 6 - 1.

  • Mat Mitchell and Matt Bre had progressed well in the doubles at Sao Paolo, but the East CWLand duo found themselves disappointed against the pairing of Mikhail Prokopenko & Roman Tshhovrebov of Russia. In a strange game, dominance swapped sides with alarming regularity with Tshhovrebov in particular struggling to hold serve. The first set was more about who was able to hold serve than win it, with a decisive service hold from Prokopenko earning them the set. The 2nd was dominated by an energetic Bre; whose movement around the court showed the developing understanding between him and Mitchell. Again with Tshhovrebov unable to hold, the East CWLanders took it to a deciding tie breaker which went the full distance before a superb reflex forehand from Prokopenko at the net earned them a match point at 10 - 9. Tshhovrebov then somehow pulled an ace out of his hat to win the match 6 - 4, 2 - 6, [11- 9]

Carson Challenger I
First Round - Carson, USA
Singles

It was a tougher day at the office for CWLanders on tour in the USA, however.

  • After a tough qualifying campaign, Pierre Rose would have hoped for an easier draw than coming up against 4th seed Jimmy Holland. Rose had a great opportunity to snatch a shock victory after taking the first set in a closely contested tie break. From that point on, despite Rose being in the match, Holland was able to win the key moments; saving 4 break point and taking 2 vital breaks from Rose to advance 6 - 7 (5 - 7), 6 - 3, 6 - 3.
  • Jason Lawley was dismantled in straight sets by a rampant Jordan Mutch. After a successful qualification, Lawley would have hoped to put up more of a showing, but Mutch was on fire from the off - taking the first set to love and giving Lawley barely time contemplate his defeat. Lawley struggled in the 2nd too, but was able to hang on to a couple of service games, and even break Mutch at one point but Mutch was still dominant and cruised to a 6 - 0, 6 - 3 win.
  • The one bright spot for the CWLanders in the crowd was the success of 7th seed Randy Banks in an absolute thriller against Kiwi Karl King. The first set took 40 minutes and contained some marvellous rallies and some hard fought games before Banks finally made inroads on the King serve, when up 5 - 4. Strangely, that was the only break of serve in an epic match. Whilst the first game took just 40 minutes, the 2nd and 3rd sets were both just shy of an hour as two players with similar styles struggled to find a chink in each others armour. King took the first tie break, and the tension mounted as the 3rd and deciding set also went to a tie break. This time, Banks was the player to assert himself - racing to a 5 - 0 lead. Despite a small comeback from King, Banks took the final two points to advance 6 - 4, 6 - 7 (5 - 7), 7 - 6 (7 - 3)

Heilbronn Challenger I
Second Round - Heilbronn
Singles

It was a great first day at Heilbronn for competitors from the former CWLand Republic as a number of the seeds were dumped out of the tournament unceremoniously.

  • Mat Mitchell enjoyed another win, this time against local wild card Peter Seel. The victory ensures a battle of East versus East and doubles partner against doubles partner as Mitchell will take on Matt Bre in the Quarter Finals. The match against Seel started well for Mitchell as he took the opening game on the Seel serve. Seemingly cruising through the first, Seel managed to pull a break back out of nothing as Mitchell lost a game from being 40 - 0 up. The tie breaker was close, but a couple of timely aces from Mitchell saw him draw away and take it. The 2nd set followed a similar pattern with a single early break from Mitchell. This time, however, there was no comeback for the German who couldn't repeat the break that he managed in the first. 7 - 6 (7 - 5), 6 - 3.
  • Matt Bre progressed after a tough battle against unseeded Andy Russell of the United Kingdom. After a tough match in the first round, Bre would have been hoping to have an easy two-setter, and he wasn't going to let a fall in intensity cost him again. Some brutal passing shots saw him dominate the first set in all but scoreline, only converting 1 break point from 7 earned to take it 6 - 3. However, Russell changed his tactics in the 2nd and adopted a more attacking style of playing; dominating the net and making significant inroads on the Bre serve. Bre was unable to find an answer and lost two service game en-route to a 6 - 2. The third set was even more aggressive, with both players searching for killer winners. The rallies were brief, the games were short and the match looked to be heading to a deciding tie breaker before Bre finally broke Russell with the set at 6 - 5. Russell looked flustered after conceding a foot fault early in the game and recovered too late to save two break points. Bre advancing 6 - 3, 2 - 6, 7 - 5.
  • Jake Loughman faced a tough match on paper against 8th seed Yevgeny Pushkov, and it was a match he was unable to take out. Loughman certainly wasn't outclassed, however, and with a bit more match fitness and experience he could have taken the Russian out. Loughman lost the key points in the match, and even though he earned a decent number of break points on the Pushkov serve, he failed to convert any of them as the Russian upped his game when required. Pushkov took a single break in each set to progress 6 - 3, 6 - 4.

Carson Challenger I
Second Round - Carson, USA
Singles

It was a tougher day at the office for CWLanders on tour in the USA, however.

  • Randy Banks hardly broke a sweat in an easy victory over South Africa's Robert Isaacs. Banks hardly got out of 1st gear in the first set, with Isaacs making a string of unforced errors; some of them comically bad, to capitulate 6 - 0. The 2nd set went to a tie breaker, but it still looked as if Banks was hardly pushing himself to dominate Isaacs, with the hapless South African only staying the match by hard and sustained running. It was no surprise that when the tie break came along, Banks was able to shift the gears and dominate Isaacs. Banks progressing 6 - 0, 7 - 6 (7 - 2)
  • 8th seed Sipko Wetzel looked to be nursing a hangover against local boy Jack Griffen as he looked all at sea, losing the first set 6 - 3. We don't know what he took in the set break - I suspect it was just a good drink of water, and I'm not suggesting anything else, but simply Griffen was annihilated in the rest of the match. You won't find too many 3 set matches where the loser fails to take a game in the 2nd and 3rd, but here was one. Wetzel progressing 3 - 6, 6 - 0, 6 - 0. Griffen getting booed off court by an upset local crowd at the end of the match.

  • There was a surprising amount needle for a tense match fought between two countrymen and doubles partners on centre court today. The bookies' odds reflected the fact that though Matt Bre might be ranked higher, Mat Mitchell was seen to be in better form as the match was pretty much even-stevens on the fixed odds. A cagey first set was punctuated with a couple of disputed line calls and an ugly moment when Mitchell played a blind shot at the net, which nearly decapitated Bre before sailing out the back. Break point opportunities came and went for both players before entering the tie break. Mitchell sailed into a 5 - 0 lead, but with incredible tenacity Bre surged back into the breaker, courtesy of the momentum gained from a pair of consecutive aces and some great winners from Mitchell 2nd serves. Mitchell audibly swore at himself as Bre earned, and then converted his first set point.
Mitchell entered the 2nd set aggressively, and as Bre has done throughout this tournament, he failed to work his way through the gears after the short break, and Mitchell took the break. That Mitchell managed to hold his serve for the rest of the set really understates the number of opportunities to break that Bre had in the set. As the match entered the third, Bre had failed to convert a single break point from 13 opportunities. However, with Mitchell seemingly tiring after two easy victories in the first couple of rounds, Bre seized his opportunity and finally broke Mitchell with the score at 1 - 1. That was Mitchell's cue to check out of the game, capitulating disappointingly 7 - 6 (7 - 5), 4 - 6, 6 - 1.
  • Bre will face the tough challenge of Number One seed Alex Peters in the Semi Final after the German eased to another straight sets win. Whoever wins that semi will feel confident heading into the final as the 2nd semi final does not feature a seed. Its a tough ask for Bre up next after a tough quarter.

  • Randy Banks suffered a disappointing exit in straight sets to 2nd seed Randy Bruce. The battle of the Randys had received decent billing in Carson, and the first set was a thriller. Banks appeared to have the upper hand, but was unable to convert enough of the chances that came his way. Bruce took an early break in the set, but Banks broke back immediately. After that, the set was all Banks, but he couldn't force another break. The tie break went with serve to 6 - 6 before an unforced error on the so-far impregnable Banks forehand gave Bruce the mini-break, which he duly took advantage of. Mentally, Bruce was now on top and Banks didn't receive any more of the opportunities that he'd managed to earn in the first. Bruce progressing 7 - 6 (8 - 6), 6 - 3.

  • On paper, Matt Bre of the Democratic CWLand Republic faced a stiff test against the well supported number 1 seed Alex Peters. Peters' progress to the semi final had been easy, and included a thoroughly workmanlike dismantlement of 6th seed Gjorgji Dinov in the quarters. However, Peters was himself outclassed by a Bre who clearly enjoyed the step up in intensity in his Quarter Final against Mat Mitchell. The form he gained in the third set of that win carried straight into the semi final. Some audacious and risky strokeplay earned Bre a break midway through the first set. That was enough to take it, and whilst Peters came back strongly in the 2nd, a weak service game with the score at 4 - 3 to Bre was the invitation that the Eastern CWLander needed; progressing 6 - 3, 6 - 3.

  • It was a battle of Americans at Carson in the semi-finals and both matches - Waylon Jones vs. Jimmy Holland and Sam Lazzeri vs. Randy Bruce followed a similar pattern. Both the supposed outsiders (Jones and Lazzeri) progressed in straight sets, in very keenly fought battles. A very loud, and full to the rafters Centre Court crowd cheered every successful shot from each of the four players on show, and there was a real party atmosphere in evidence. That Jones and Lazzeri will contest the final will be of little concern to the partizan fans who'll be most happy that they will yet again get the opportunity to cheer on American players.

  • After Matt Bre's easy win in the semi-final against the much fancied Alex Peters, many were expecting him to run through to a dominant victory over the less well known Dieter Bonhof. However, Bonhof proved to be anything but a push over, spurred on by a crowd that was only there to cheer on the German. Despite facing crowd derision from any poor shot he played, Bre clearly didn't let nerves get to him as his error rate and 1st serve percentage remained as high as at any point in the tournament. Bre struggled to make inroads on the Bonhof serve, which was also firing on all cylinders. However, with the score at 5 - 4 to Bre, he managed to steal a timely break of serve thanks to an audacious lob, which a tentative Bonhof left alone.
The second set was a stark contrast as errors started to creep in to both players' games. Bonhof looked to be in danger of losing in straight sets as Bre took an immediate break. At 3 - 2 up, however Bre's game started to come apart at the seams - losing 4 consecutive games thanks to a surfeit of unforced errors.
The decider was a tense affair. Bre fought off Bonhof well in his first service game, despite facing half a dozen deuces and 3 break points. That was the turning point for Bre. He didn't break Bonhof again, but that tense hold saw him grow in confidence and his serve was not again at risk. In contrast, the pressure started to get to Bonhof and his error rate grew as a result. A double fault at 3 - 3 gave Bre three break points, of which he took the third. At 5 - 3, Bre broke a dejected Bonhof for a second time to hoist the Heilbronn Challenger Trophy

  • Waylon Jones took out the final in straight sets at Carson over local rival Sam Lazzeri. In a closely contested match, Jones appeared to have luck on his side as a firm forehand struck the top of the net cord to drop onto Lazzeri's side to secure the break in the first. In the 2nd set, Jones played the better tennis and sealed a break to love half way through the set thanks to a run of aggressive forehands. The crowd were pleased that an American took out the prize. And the runners up prize. And the 3rd/4th playoff prize. And the prize for losing in the 3rd/4th playoff.
