Excellent way to start the season, looking forward to getting in another two or three matches at Kooyong before the Open.

Sao Paolo Challenger
Finals - Sao Paolo, Brazil
Singles

  • In a topsy-turvy final, 6th seed Anwar Juraev prevailed against Fernando Aguero. The first set was all Juraev as he was able to consolidate on an early break and a high error rate from Aguero to take it 6 - 1. However, Aguero fought tooth and nail to get back into the match and saved 3 break points in the second set, whilst also missing out on two of his own to force the second set to a tie break. At 3 - 6, Juraev had a fist-full of match points. Unbelievably, Aguero had a staggering passage of play to push the nervy Juraev hard. Aguero took the breaker 9 - 7. The final set was nip and tuck, much like the 2nd. With the 3rd set poised at 5 - 5, Juraev finally converted a break point (his 7th since the end of the first set). Holding his serve proved easy as Aguero caved in. Final score 6 - 1, 6 - 7 (7 - 9), 7 - 5

  • Seeded players out: Fernando Aguero (5)

Doubles

  • Unseeded Mat Mitchell and Matt Bre have caused quite a storm in their doubles outing at Sao Paolo. Granted, they hadn't taken out any seeded opposition en route to the final, but they'd persevered and made it further than more experienced opponents. The final, against Rodriquez and Rodriguez of Argentina was somewhat disappointing, however. The Argentines focused on the Bre serve, which held out against the initial onslaught. However, Bre's second service game collapsed from a dominant position of 40 - 15. The Argentines taking the first set 6 - 4. Despite having failed to progress far into the singles draw, Bre looked jaded during the 2nd set and was unable to help Mitchell to gain a foothold in the game. The Argentines prevailing in an easy 6 - 4, 6 - 2 victory.

  • Seeded players out: None

Worst effort, really needed to continue on from the first. Yet another wasted opportunity.
