Points here help you solidify a spot in the top five, but from what I remember Ox had a strong start to season I and can't really make up points until after RG. Best chance of ousting Daneu is if he doesn't do well in Indian Wells or Miami (where he has 2000 points to defend).
Only made R3 or R4 in the Aus Open iirc. (Was a strong result considering seeding, but certainly possible to pick up more when seeded sixth.) Have a lot of points to defend in February though.

Fourth round loss to Spidla, naturally. Qualified though, which leaves 330 to defend and its only 360 for a QF.

Read to suffer the biggest free fall as he won all of his points before the clay season.

Quarter Finals Singles - Sao Paolo, Brazil

Following 2 days washed out at Sao Paolo, a congested fixture schedule took place on an extended Saturday.

  • Marcuss Deane entered the quarter finals as the only remaining unseeded player. His opponent, Anvar Juraev had overcome a tough 3rd round match against Sam Lazzeri, but was looking for revenge on Deane given an untimely ball from Deane's doubles match had caused him to lose a point in his 3rd round match. Deane played well in the first set, causing Juraev continual problems on his serve. However, Deane failed to convert no less than 4 break point opportunities. Deane had a 5th, 6th and 7th opportunity on the Juraev serve with the set poised at 5 - 5. However, after again failing to capitalise, Deane responded badly in his subsequent serve match, double faulting to present Juraev with his first break opportunity of the match. The greater experience of Deane's opponent told, as he lured Deane to the net before unleashing a great lob shot to take the set. Deane's spirit was broken, and it was no surprise that he gave an early break in the second set and capitulated 7 - 5, 6 - 2. However, his display in the first three rounds should serve him well in the next few weeks.
  • In the pick of the other quarter finals, Argentina's Emelio Cobos took on 5th seeded Spaniard Fernando Aguero. Only two breaks of serve resulted in the whole match, one to Cobos and one to Aguero. The 3rd set went to a tie breaker which Aguero stole following a contentious line call at 3 - 2 in his favour. Aguero prevailing 7 - 5, 4 - 6, 7 - 6 (7 - 2)

  • Seeded players out: Felipe Menon (2), Emelio Cobos (4), Michael de Kinsele (7)

Semi Finals Singles - Sao Paolo, Brazil

  • Number one seed, Johan Ortiz was sensationally ousted in straight sets by Fernando Aguero. If people thought that Aguero would be exhausted after his 3 setter earlier in the day against Emelio Cobos (which, the opening odds clearly reflected) then they were to be proven wrong. A single break in each set was enough for Aguero to progress 6 - 4, 6 - 3
  • In a tough match, Anvar Juraev overcame losing the first set to defeat Slovenian Mario Timko in three sets. The match never really lit up, with a number of atrocious errors from both players. Juraev looked a little shocked to progress 4 - 6, 6 - 4, 6 - 3

  • Seeded players out: Johan Ortiz (1), Mario Timko (11)

Excellent result for Smeltz, should be favourite given the names left in the draw.

Semi Final Doubles - Sao Paolo, Brazil

In a subdued doubles draw after the early exit of the top 3 seeds, the remaining 4 pairings were in bullish mood as they took to the courts once the rains had stopped falling.
  • CWLanders Mat Mitchell and Matt Bre faced tough opposition in the form of Brazilian duo Rafael Carioca and Felipe Menon who had ousted the top seeds in the first round. However, it was the inexperienced CWLanders who made the Brazilians look amateur with a comprehensive victory. Bre in particular seemed to be taking out some of his frustrations of an early singles exit on the hapless Brazilian pair as he made considerable distance over the court to win some crucial points. One break was enough in the first set to take it 6 - 3, and an early break in the 2nd was built on to progress 6 - 3, 6 - 2.
  • In the final, the East CWLand duo will face 4th seeded pair Diego Rodriques and Julio Rodrigues. The Argentine pairing were pushed hard by French outfit Franck Brunet and Jeremy Chateau. The French pairing looked fresh after a facile victory over the hapless Marcuss Deane and Koal Kao in the 2nd round, and continued to show form as they pressed the Argentine serve. However, a costly double fault with the scores level on the Brunet serve gave the Argentines a first break point, which they duly converted to take the first set 7 - 5. Despite looking short of their best, the Argentines made the most of the opportunities that came their way, and again converted their only break point in the second set. A tough result for the plucky French pairing, as they were knocked out 7 - 5, 6 - 4

Semi Finals - Doha (Qatar)

  • True to his word, world No. 5 Sven Oxenstierna has leveled his career record against top seed Daniel Paez Blanco to 2-2 as he came from a set down to run down the Spanish World No. 2. Blanco started strongly and earned a decisive break of service in the twelfth game to capture the first set 7-5. After losing his last meeting against Oxenstierna, he looked keen to atone but failed to capitalise on his first set form as Ox ramped up the pressure to claim the second in a cakewalk. Blanco never really regain his early intesity as Oxenstierna continued to force the issue; keeping his hopes of a second tour title alive with a confident 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 win.
  • The big test now comes in the final as he faces legitimate bogey played Radek Spidla. The second seed holds a 4-0 record over Oxenstierna, and managed to survive a brutal three-set epic against fifth seed Miroslav Brdar. The 22-year old Croatian served brilliantly, but could not keep out the Czech giant who pressed his claims on the World No. 2 position with a 7-6(7), 4-6, 7-5 win.

  • Seeded players out:
    Daniel Paez Blanco;
    Miroslav Brdar.
  • It was a double disaster for Blanco as he and partner Sergio Joaquin were denied a final in the doubles draw as they were easily beaten by fast-improving team Dusko Milosevic & Savo Petkovia. The unseeded Serbians had little trouble in the night session as they cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win to set up a final against top seeds Tal Cohen & Raz Teper who overturned a one-set deficit to beat Mark Harmel & Yves Parmentier 3-6, 6-1, 10-6.

  • Seeded players out:
    Mark Harmel &
    Yves Parmentier.

Semi Finals - Chennai (India)

  • As expected, CWLand's Scotland Rivers was unable to produce another upset as he was easily beaten in straight sets by third seed Davis Kennedy in the semi finals of the Chennai draw. Rivers had come off a victory against the World No. 11, but it was another top 15 player that proved all too much for him as he fell 6-3, 6-3. The Canadian finished season I with a bang following a horrific middle to the season, and looks to start his second season with a tournament win - an important one considering the points he has to defend in the first quarter.
  • He'll face American fifth seed Morgan Carter in the final following his 6-4, 7-5 victory over Luxembourg's Oliver Engel. With his championship points for Sydney set to drop off next week, the victory is of great importance to Carter if he wants to stay in touch for an Australian Open seeding. The big Luxembourg player had already produced a great week, but could not win through to a final as he fell in straight sets.

  • Seeded players out: None.
  • The doubles final will be a much-anticipated showdown between the top two seeds as both teams won their semi final matches. Jefferson Drake & Martti Korpinen proved too good for mixed CWLand pairing Rob Bowenburg & Jarkko Maxum; coming from a set down to clinch a match tiebreaker. Bowenburg and Maxum were irresistible in the first set tiebreaker, but dropped the ball in the second with three breaks of service. They recovered to be 7-5 in the tiebreaker, but dropped six of the last eight points to bow out 6-7(2), 6-2, 11-9.
  • Meanwhile, top seeds Hayden & Ross Onwye were more convincing in their 7-5, 6-4 win over third seeds Lee Inmin & Qingdong Tsai. The Moroccans have made it clear that they intend to finally break through with a Grand Slam title at Melbourne Park.

Brisbane International II
Semi Finals - Brisbane (Australia)

  • Randy Smeltz is in prime position to earn a second tour title as he yet again overcame a slow start to mow down in form Chinese player Li Wang. Li, fresh off ousting top seed Darcy Cowan in the quarters, started rapidly as he claimed the first set off Smeltz with a second service break. But, much like his quarter final against Lari Farkkila, the slow start seemed to spring Smeltz into gear and he earned a well-deserved first break of service in the eleventh game of the second set. That allowed him to level the match against the flow of play as the Chinese No. 2 began to falter. Such faltering was seen as he failed to hold either of his first two games in the third, and although Smeltz failed to serve out the match once, he did it the second time for a 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 win.
  • In the second semi final, Smeltz's opponent was decided as Antonio Bachunelli disappointed an expectant home crowd in his straight sets win over Rod Bosnar. The local qualifier had previously dumped Oneil Stewart and Henry Charles, and late money saw many back the Aussie. But he lacked the weapons to counter Bachunelli's game; the Italian continually wearing him down with spin and setting him up for the big forehand winner in contrast to the seemingly gung-ho style of the Jamaican and Brit before him. Bachunelli eventually proved too good in an uninspiring display as he sleepwalked to a 7-5, 6-4 win.

  • Seeded players out:
    Li Wang.
  • There was some consolation for the Australian crowd that cared about the doubles final as Toby Brookes & Henry Charles advanced to their first final. Not a regular duo, they made the most of a good draw and booked their finals spot with a 6-3, 6-7(8), 10-5 win over Oneil Stewart & Shaun Poole. In the final, they face new team and fourth seeds Morton Blundell & Wayne Boyd who proved too much for Sergiy Malachenko & Alexey Yarkin.

Super result over Drake, disappointed though to fall to a lower ranked player than he afterwards. Was thinking of doubling up with a tournie in Week 3 before the Aus Open, but glad I chose not to now having gone so deep into this week. Super.

Gah, Maxum and Bowenburg need to lift, gutting to come within 4 points of a maiden doubles Final, even still, a semi-final appearance a good lead-in to the Open.

Final - Doha (Qatar)

  • Third seed Sven Oxenstierna has blown another opportunity to get one over rival Radek Spidla as he was beaten in three sets by World No. 3 Radek Spidla. Holding a horrible 0-4 record against the Czech big man, Oxenstierna seemed determined to both rectify his poor history and take a second tour title. His campaign started well as he claimed a massive break of service in the third game of the opening set and, although he was broken back straight away, took out the opening set 6-4 with some good returning. The relationship between the two has been tense at the best of times due to a number of disagreements - both on court and off court - and Spidla was not about to give up easily. He ramped up his serve percentage to more than 75 in the second set and it proved all too much for Oxenstierna to handle as he wrapped up the breaker 7-1. Oxenstierna needed to reverse the trend early in the second, but was denied two break points by some big aces as the second seed cruised through the decider to seal the title 4-6, 7-6(1), 6-3 to send out a message to his Australian Open opponents.

  • Seeded players out:
    Sven Oxenstierna.
  • At least the Ox's day wasn't as bad as Dusko Milosevic and Savo Petkovia as they failed to win a game in a bizzare doubles final. Top seeds Tal Cohen & Raz Teper came in as favourites, but the surprise packets were expected to challenge the Israelis considering their good form over the week. That never eventuated, and even had there been an injury cloud over either of the Serbian pair they were embarrassed in a tour final 6-0, 6-0.

  • After quietly scything through the bottom half, American Morgan Carter has kept in touch with an Australian Open seeding following his straight sets win over Canada's Davis Kennedy. Kennedy was outclassed in the first set,, but got underway leveling the match in the second as he broke straight away. Carter faltered, and soon found himself down 2-5 before the Canadian double faulted to give him an opening back into the match. Carter stormed through the Kennedy defences and took five games on the trot to seal a 6-3, 7-5 win ahead of losing 350 points from his Sydney win next week.

  • Seeded players out:

  • East CWLand's Jefferson Drake & Martti Korpinen have given up a set-to-love lead to be chased down in the final of the doubles draw by World No. 2 pair Hayden & Ross Onwye. The Moroccan duo started sluggishly as the second seeds earned a crucial break of service in the very first game of the match. Eight games later they did it again, and had the first set 6-3 to leave the brothers playing catchup in the second. They did it effectively, too, and despite giving up a commanding 4-0 lead still managed to take the set 6-3. As has so often been the case, it was the match tiebreaker that would decide the title and it was neck-and-neck until 5-5. Then disaster struck as Korpinen double faulted and Drake sprayed a forehand wide to hand the Moroccans a minibreak. It was enough of a buffer for the Moroccans to close out the match and win the title 3-6, 6-3, (10-7).

Final - Brisbane (Australia)

  • Whilst yesterday Sven Oxenstierna and today Jefferson Drake & Martti Korpinen failed to win in their finals in Qatar and India respectively, fourth seed Randy Smeltz has added the Brisbane International title to his win in Warsaw with another come-from-behind victory over Antonio Bachunelli. Smeltz had started poorly in his last two matches, but was right out of the blocks here against the free-wheeling Bachunelli who spent much of the first set hitting the cover off the ball. Despite both players being dismissive of the threat their opponents posed in the lead up to the match, they had to be mildly impressed by the quality of tennis that was on display as Smeltz saved three set points. The fourth, however, proved too much as Bachunelli sealed the first in a tiebreaker, but the intensity was just as relentless in the second set as both served out six games in a row each to move to another tiebreaker. This time, though, Smeltz broke free from 5-5 to bring up set point with a classy cross-court backhand to set up the easy volley. Serving out the second set, it became a case of who would crack first and in the fifth game of the set Bachunelli sent one of his power forehands long to bring up two break points. Smeltz blew the first but took the second thanks to a netted backhand to set up what would become a 4-2 lead. Try as he might, Bachunelli could not get the break he needed and it was Smeltz who completed a third straight comeback 6-7(5), 7-6(5), 6-4.

  • Toby Brookes & Henry Charles have completed disappointing weeks in the singles arena to claim the doubles title 7-6(3), 6-3 against fourth seeds Wayne Boyd & Morton Blundell.
