The dream run for both CWLand representatives in the Auckland draw came to an abrupt end today as Jojo Mustard and Sven Oxenstierna fell to the top and third seed respectively. For Mustard it was a tough prospect against the arguably the greatest player alive, but he made a good fist of it early to level the first set at four games apiece. But Jason Hall has the ability to lift his game when needed and made sure that his perfect record of not dropping a set in the tournament would remain as he managed a break of service in the final game of the set to seal it 6-4. From there it was all academic as Mustard, who wasn't performing as badly as the score suggested, was at times reduced to a mere observer of Hall's exceptional game. He raced through the last set in 26 minutes on the back of a booming forehand down the line to claim the match 6-4 6-1.

His opponent in the semifinal will be world number eight Zoltan Varga in a hotly anticipated encounter as the Hungarian made light work of qualifier Sven Oxenstierna. Varga broke early in the first set and again later to race to a 6-2 win, but things would get worse for The Ox who was obviously less fresh following two three set encounters. Varga seemed to only benefit from a hard slog against Murphy S'ua as he improved his game even more in the second set as he refused to drop a game to The Ox who capitulated in just over 25 minutes. The 6-2 6-0 win more than enough to set up a dream semifinal clash with Hall.

In the other semifinal, fifth seed Heinz Hainisch will face unseeded Ross Onwye in the semifinal after overcoming fourth seed Darcy Cowan in the third quarterfinal. Hainisch dropped the first set 5-7, but stuck close to the eighteen year old and forced the second set to a breaker. A clinical display in the tiebreaker set the tone for a breezy third set for the Austria to seal a 5-7 7-6(3) 6-2 win. His opponent in the final will be Ross Onwye who managed a close 7-5 7-6(4) victory over his brother Hayden Onwye. The Moroccan brothers put on an entertaining display, but the qualifier just couldn't match it with his older brother as Ross advanced to the second semi.

Seeds Out: 4-Darcy Cowan (USA).

The impressive form of qualifier Tom Vollan continued as he booked a semifinal showdown with top seed Radek Špidla of the Czech Republic with a three set win over fifth seed Johan Ortiz. In an odd match of quickly changing momentum, none of the sets were closely fought as the pair exchanged 6-2 sets to begin with. With Ortiz in red hot touch following the second, the Norwegian hit back with renewed vigour to seal a 6-2 2-6 6-3 win. In the first quarterfinal, Špidla came back from a set down to easily down Marcelo Alavos 4-6 6-4 6-0. On the other side of the draw, second seed Patrick Pascaul missed out on a semifinal spot as he was downed in three sets by seventh seeded American Morgan Carter. It is assured that at least one American will be contesting the Medibank International final as Carter was joined by Wayne Boyd who came from behind to defeat Pierre L'Estrange in the third semifinal despite dropping the opening set.

Seeds Out: 5-Johan Ortiz (COL); 2-Patrick Pascaul (FRA).

Unseeded Moroccan Ross Onwye has booked an unlikely finals showdown against world number one Jason Hall following a three set victory over fifth seeded Austrian Heinz Hainisch. Fresh off beating his brother in the quarters, Onwye was in fine touch in the opening set as he broke Hainisch's serve in the fourth game before going on to claim it 6-3. But the Austrian, who knocked out fourth seeded wonderkid Darcy Cowan in the quarters, was not going down without a fight as he broke early in the second set to level the match at one set a piece. It was a blow to Onwye as he missed a couple of crucial break points, but he made up for it by holding his nerve in a tiebreaker in the decider - sealing a 6-3 4-6 7-6(4) win. Onwye faces a much larger challenge in the form of Hall who continued his unstoppable form with a 6-2 6-2 thumping of Zoltan Varga. Hall has not dropped a set in the tournament so far and nothing suggests that it set to change.

Seeds Out: 3-Zoltan Varga (HUN), 5-Heinz Hainisch (AUT).

In Sydney, another top seed made it to the final as Radek Špidla came from behind to overcome a brave performance from qualifier Tom Vollan of Norway. Vollan, who had already defeated two seeded players en route to the semis, looked in impressive touch in the first set as he claimed it 6-3. But unlike Marcelo Alavos in the quarters, Špidla's opponent did not go away as Vollan stuck close to the world number six as the second set edged towards 5-5. But unfortunately for the Norwegian, he dropped what would be the penultimate game of the set to allow Špidla to level the game at one set each. It was a carbon-copy in the third set as the Norwegian dropped the identical game to hand the top seed passage into the final with a 3-6 7-5 7-5 win. His opponent will be American Morgan Carter who defeated countryman Wayne Boyd in the second semifinal in straight sets. It wasn't all one way traffic for the seventh seed as the 33-year old Boyd stuck close, but ultimately fell short as Carter booked a spot in the final with an impressive 7-6 (5) 6-3 win.

Seeds Out: None.

Cracking match between Ross and Hayden Onwye. I was glad to have purchased tickets to Court Number One via the legal channels. Some incredible shots played, but of even more interest was the sledging between the players. My favourite exchange was:

"You're a Bastard, Ross!"
"If I'm a Bastard, You're a Bastard too, ****!"

Massively late, and not even in the sign-up thread. Yay me. Hope you can fit me in.

Name: Martti Korpinen
Nationality: Suomi (Finland)
Date of birth: 23/11/1989
Right or left-handed: Right
Signature court (pick ONE): Hard
Short biography of person and style:
Standing at a modest 5'11", and as lean as a rake, Martti is fast, aggressive and precise. He likes to dictate the game by putting the ball exactly where he wants it, and has a wicked backhand. Unfortunately he lacks a game-breaking serve, and is often undone by smart powerful returns. Coupled with a weaker forehand and an inability to settle for the percentage plays, he can often be exploited by more experienced players. Many mistake his intense eyes and complete lack of a smile as arrogance on court, however Martti struggles to deal with attention and hides himself behind a shield which few manage to penetrate. Youth is on his side however and he may learn to overcome his negatives to become a great player.

If you need 10 players I can do them, but think it's a bit late?

World number one Jason Hall has taken a surprisingly hard-fought win over the unseeded Ross Onwye of Morocco to claim victory in the Heineken Open. Despite the straight sets scoreline, Hall had it tough against Onwye whose supreme endurance made many of Hall's normally unreturnable shots returnable. At times it seemed it would turn into a battle of athleticism as the equally adept athlete Hall managed to match Onwye at the expense of some real opportunities to break the first set open. But with the scores locked at five-all, Hall managed to finally break the steady serve of Onwye and claim a set-winning 6-5 lead. It was a similar tale in the second set as Onwye looked no chance on Hall's serve but surprisingly consistent on his own. Consistency didn't stop Hall managing to bring up four break points throughout the set before finally making the breakthrough in the fifth game of the set - a break which would never be made up as Hall romped to a 7-5 7-5 win.

Seeds Out: None.

Czech top seed Radek Špidla suffered a dramatic second set capitulation to forfeit the Medibank International crown as American Morgan Carter ran over him in a dominant 7-6(7) 6-0 win. In two sets which couldn't be more different, Špidla and Carter exchanged two breaks each in the opening set which was forced to a tiebreaker - neither man looking particularly convincing on their own service. But as the marathon tiebreaker was decided 9-7 in favour of the American, Špidla seemed to lose all confidence whilst Morgan only gained in form - particularly on his own serve - as he raced out to a 4-0 lead. Having Morgan breaking his serve twice in two games was just about enough to kill off any chance of Špidla getting back into the contest - a position made even worse as Špidla blew a 40-0 lead in the fifth game to fall behind 5-0. It took just three aces for Morgan to seal the championship with a pants down set - claiming the $73,900 prize.

Seeds Out: 1-Radek Špidla (CZE).

Reckon just quietly CWL could put its hand up to host the masters series final at the end of the year in the next few years. I can confirm that a $145m tennis centre catering for hard court specialists is being built in the heart of Fitzworthingham.

Not quite sure I have seedings right - is it the top 32 players ranked who directly qualify? Also there is a clean bill of health. I'm going to give injuries a miss until I can get myself a reliable injury generator.

In section one of the draw, Caresh Mahboob caused the big upset of the first round of qualifying with a straight sets win over top seed Mikel Fosdike of France. Fosdike looked off his game against the young CWLand representative and paid for it dearly as Mahboob romped home to a 6-3 7-5 victory. In the same section, Brett Read was not so lucky as he received a thorough smashing at the hands of Morton Blundell of the Bahamas. Blundell was too classy for the 28-year old and ended his Open campaign before it really began with a 6-4 6-3 win. Ryan Fredericks managed to come back from a set down against Swiss 24-year old Alex Karlen to advance to the round of 64. The pair were evenly matched in the opening set before Karlen took it in a tiebreaker, but "Ranga" found his touch and waltzed home to an emphatic 6(3)-7 6-2 6-4 win.

In the second section, Jamee Hancianu was disappointing in his three set loss to Serbia's Savo Petkoviä. Hancianu surprised all by making it to the second round of the Brisbane International where he narrowly lost to Australian David Champion, but the 22-year old Serb was a good match for the Romanian-born youngster. Hancianu had a fantastic opportunity to take the match after winning the second set 7-5 - the only thing stopping from the match finishing there was the fact he blew two set points in the first tiebreaker. He dropped a game on service early in the third and that was all she wrote for Hancianu as he lost 6(6)-7 7-5 4-6.

In the third section, Randy Smeltz also advanced to a second round showdown with Henrik Henrikkson of Sweden after a come-from-behind victory over nineteenth seed Scott Whitehouse. Whitehouse looked comfortable in the opening set with a 6-3 win, but Smeltz made a stunning comeback of the course of the next two sets to seal the match 3-6 6-4 7-5 in emphatic fashion. In an all CWLand showdown, Hamish McSporran proved too good for Suryakant Singh in an odd match of conflicting momentum. McSporran took the first set 6-3 but looked as if he'd fall apart at the seams as Singh raced back into the match by taking the second set 6-1. But somehow Singh took little to no momentum into the decider, being smashed 6-0 and finding himself knocked out of the tournament.

In section four, Jefferson Drake also got off to a winning start by overcoming Shaun Lesley of South Africa in a hard-fought slog. The three set thriller won't put him in the best of fitness for his clash against tenth seed Sam Cunningham despite a dominant opening set. Drake claimed the opener 6-2 before losing the second in slightly more competitive fashion than Lesley managed to drop the first. It took 45 minutes for a long third set to be decided 7-5 to hand Drake a pass into a second round showdown with the Kiwi Cunningham.

Despite winning the second set of his section five match, Andy Pimpkins' lack of fitness was costly against Chile's Patricio Sãnchez as the world number 149 took a three set victory. Sãnchez broke Pimpkins early in the first set and held his lead to claim it 6-4, before Pimpkins rallied to wipe Sãnchez off the court in the second. But the CWLander was still breathing heavily despite relatively little running and relied solely on his serve against Sãnchez who, admittedly, had some trouble in returning many of the powerful shots. But he did manage one break of service in the fifth game to seal a 6-4 2-6 7-5 win.

Section six was slightly less successful for CWLand as only Mat Mitchell advanced out of the three players. Mitchell was impressive against Israeli fourteenth seed Yitkhak Eban and took the first set off the 22-year old in nearly three quarters of an hour. But it seemed like the higher ranking of Eban may prevail as he blew away Mitchell in the second set following two breaks of service. But Mitchell rallied to break once early and once late in the third to claim the match 7-5 2-6 6-2 to book a second round match with Anothy Ficher of the US. Whilst Mitchell had some success, the same could not be said for Billy Spleen and Jean-Paul Valley as the both suffered first round exits. Spleen was never really in the hunt against China's Kim Gai as he bowed out in straight sets, but Valley managed to take Puerto Rican Brendan Tito to three sets before exiting 3-6 6-3 3-6 in a mathematician's dream.

Rob "The Lob" Bowenburg also caused an impressive upset for the Isle of CWLand as he upstaged David Lebègue of France in three sets. The sixth seeded Lebègue looked in ordinary touch early and, despite breaking the serve of Bowenburg in the first game, soon dropped serve twice in a row and conceded to first set 4-6. But the sixth seed quickly ran out to a 4-0 lead in the second set and, despite holding serve for a consolation two games, Bowenburg seemed intent on conceding the set and storing his energy. The tactic worked off as he traded solid service games with the sixth seed in the third set and prevailed in a tense tiebreaker 6-4 2-6 7-6(9). Rock Daniels also had a much-needed victory with a straight sets thumping of Portugal's Ricardo Couto. Couto couldn't break the serve of the steady CWLander and paid for it dearly in a 3-6 3-6 loss. Another CWLander to advance here was Sven Oxenstierna who continued his impressive touch with a straight sets thumping of Robert Franklin. The 26-year old journeyman couldn't match it with "The Ox" and soon capitulated in a pair of 4-6 sets.

CWLand cult figure Heath Davis had an enjoyable come-from-behind victory over Yan Zin Hlet of Myanmar. The sixteenth seed could have easily seen a different result on any other day such was the close nature of the match, but Davis was eventually the more solid looking of the two as he broke very late in the first set to take it 7-5. But the slightly built sixteenth seed hit back at Davis to break in the second game of the second set - a break he would hold for a 6-4 win. It seemed only fitting that the match went to a deciding tiebreaker, and it was the larger and stronger Davis who prevailed against the five foot eight inch Burmese veteran - advancing 7-5 4-6 7-6(6). Elsewhere, Spas Delev completed his first professional victory as he took a three set win over Ireland's Eoin O'Malley. The Irishman managed to win the second set 6-0, but his brief show of form wasn't able to make up for two poor sets as he lost 2-6 6-0 3-6.

Seeds Out: 1-Mikel Fosdike (FRA); 4-Michael De Kinsele (ITA); 6-David Lebègue (FRA); 9-Matthew Oertel (RSA); 14-Yitkhak Eban (ISR); 15-Ivan Genov (BUL); 16-Yan Zin Hlet (MYA); 18-Yevgeny Pushkov (RUS); 21-Max Eisenhauer (GER); 24-Luis Nadal (POR); 26-Miguel Sanchez (MEX); 30-Ali Irmak (TUR)
