Yeah it should. The only problem at the moment is that the rankings are starting from scratch, so one good performance sees you shoot well up the rankings. Once guys have played more tournaments, and their points generally aren't going up by anywhere up to three hundred in a given week as often, hopefully we'll see some more stability.

So i'm doomed to qualify for torunaments every now and then and back it up with first round exits while floating idly around the 150 mark...bugger.

Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters
Round of 56 - Monte Carlo

Draw - Top Half
Draw - Bottom Half

It was a winning start for many CWLanders in the opening round of the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters in Monaco overnight, as no less than five made will compete in the final 32. Whilst Oxenstierna had a bye; Randy Smeltz, Jamee Hancianu, Jefferson Drake and Jojo Mustard and will join them after having winning starts to their tournament. The German-born Smeltz managed to produce an upset of sorts against Spain's Ion Andueza. As the lowest ranked direct qualifier for the tournament, Smeltz looked to take control early against his higher ranked opponent and did so in a dominant opening set. With both men coming off good starts to their clay seasons, Smeltz looked to superior player as he worked hard to take the first set 6-2. Ever the grinder, Smeltz continued to chip away at his opponent in the second after going down a break early - breaking back late in the set to head to a tiebreaker. Smeltz would eventually prevail 6-2 7-6(5), but will face the toughest match of his career in the second round - Daniel Páez Blanco waiting.

Elsewhere, Mustard faces a tough second round clash against Illya Altman after earning a tough win against Belgian qualifier Mark Harmel. The Houston semifinalist was somewhat disappointing against his lower ranked opponent as the two traded sets to send the match to a decider. But after dropping the second set 3-6, Mustard looked to come back from the brink against the qualifier and did so in style as he raced to a 3-0 lead. Although Harmel pulled the match back to even terms, his steady yet slow serve was his undoing in the final game of the match as Mustard broke to take a 6-1 3-6 7-5 win. Mustard's next opponent, Altman, produced a comfortable win against CWLand's Brett Read. After taking the first set in straightforward fashion, the fourteenth seed was tested by and out-of-form Read who stuck with his higher ranked opponent right throughout the second set. But with the scores tied at 5-5, Read dropped a service game and Altman held on to complete a 6-2 7-5 victory.

Jamee Hancianu will go into his second round clash with a big chance of knocking off third seeded Czech Radek Špidla following a straight sets win over Bulgarian Ivan Genov. Hancianu looked far too good on the clay for his 29-year old opponent as he pulled off an expected 6-1 7-5 victory. Hancianu moved much better than Genov, and looked the better player as he booked a second round clash with Špidla on the big-serving Czech player's Achilles heel. In section four, Jefferson Drake came from a set down to dispatch Argentina's Juan Moreno. Despite not actively enjoying clay court tennis, the Casablanca champion has looked in superb form on the slower surface so far after his victory last week. But Moreno came out with fire and took a set-winning early break; Drake struggling against his Argentinian opponent. But Jefferson got the crowd involved with his ambitious tennis and ability to retrieve anything as he came back to smash Moreno 4-6 6-1 6-2 and set up a clash with Diego Hurtado of Ecuador.

It was little surprise to see Heath Davis fall in the top half as the big-server struggled to stick with American Dwayne Murdoch. Whilst Carter was always going to be too good for Davis around the clay court, Davis remained hopeful of at the very least serving well. He failed in that respect as he fired down eleven double faults to hand his opponent a comfortable straight sets win. Davis didn't even produce a break point opportunity, and, like Roy Daniels, will have a tough clay season - Murdoch advancing 6-2 6-3.

Qualifier Billy Spleen also suffered defeat as he fell in three sets to French wildcard Jean-Christophe Genghini. Genghini, who made the semifinals of the U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships last week, played good solid tennis throughout the match, despite losing the second in disappointing style. Despite the loss, the 19-year old Spleen impressed with his ability to match it with his veteran opponent - culminating in him taking the second set 6-2. But Genghini proved too strong for the man ten years his junior - setting up a second round clash with Sven Oxenstierna 6-4 2-6 6-2.

Seeds Out: 10-Davis Kennedy (CAN).

Blanco makes winning start

An appetising third round showdown between Daniel Páez Blanco and Sven Oxenstierna remains likely after the twelfth seed smashed Argentinian qualifier Paolo Mandonna in straight sets to start his tournament with a bang. Blanco bagelled Mandonna in the first set, and just conceeded one game in the second as he started on his path to confirm he is the greatest clay courter in the world with a victory. If Blanco can get past Randy Smeltz of CWLand in the second round, he will likely face sixth seed Oxenstierna next after the CWLander enjoyed a day off with a bye. Blanco, however, remained fairly coy about the possibility. "I am not focussing on him yet, I [am] focussing on my next match. Smeltz is a difficult player [to beat], so if I do I will then focus on Sven," he said in the post-match press conference for a Spanish television station.

Bollocks. Guess I'll stick around and see how winners play on clay and try and pick up a few tips. Bloody clay, its a crap surface and leaves your clothes covered in stains that I'll need to use Cillit Bang / Easy off Bam! on to get out.

Terrible.

Shouting encouragement for Drake again now.

Sven Oxenstierna and Daniel Páez Blanco will headline the third round of the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters after both recorded victories in their second round clashes. But it nearly wasn't to be for Oxenstierna as he struggled to a victory against French wildcard Jean-Christophe Genghini. Genghini, a finalist in Houston, took the first set in a tiebreaker against the rusty Oxenstierna and even went up a break in the second. But in his first tournament on clay in months, Oxenstierna bravely fought back from 0-3 down in the second to take the second set 6-4. The deciding set was, for the most part, even; but an early break from the lanky Ox helped him to a hard-fought victory 6(3)-7 6-4 6-4 and to a blockbuster third round clash. In contrast, Blanco made it look easy against unseeded CWLander Randy Smeltz. Smeltz came into the match confident of causing an upset, but soon found out the hard way that it takes a lot to beat the Spanish sensation. In little over an hour, Blanco had broken serve four times and hadn't even conceded a break point on his own - advancing 6-2 6-2.

Elsewhere, Jefferson Drake was the second CWLander to progress to the third round after he continued his dramatic return to form with a 7-5 7-6(4) win over Diego Hurtado. The Colombian really tested the thirteenth seed, but just wasn't good enough when it counted as he slumped to a straight sets loss. Drake's ability to win the big points will hold him in good stead for the rest of the season, but he'll have to be wary about his third round opponent - second seed Radivoj Daneu.

Third seed Radek Špidla certainly gave his critics something to think about after he advanced to the third round with a straight sets win over Jamee Hancianu of CWLand. Špidla, who has been roundly written off on clay courts, stunned Hancianu in the first set as he found his range with his big-hitting game. Although Hancianu managed to grind out the second set against the lumbering Czech player, he couldn't continue his good form into the third set as Špidla grew from strength-to-strength. His 6-3 6(6)-7 6-1 win will give him great confidence for his third round clash against fourteenth seed Illya Altman. The Ukrainian managed to produce a fantastic third set turnaround to defeat CWLand's Jojo Mustard after dropping the second 1-6. Mustard stunned the Monaco crowd by coming back from a 2-6 opening set loss to even the match up in style; but the fourteenth seed proved too strong in the deciding set tiebreaker to avoid a massive upset.

Seeds Out: 4-Darcy Cowan (USA); 5-Zhijun Sun (CHN); 8-David Champion (AUS); 15-Almen Benaglio (SUI).

Big names bomb out of Monte Carlo

Fourth seed Darcy Cowan and fifth seed Zhijun Sun have suffered disappointing finishes to their Monte Carlo Masters event as both bowed out in the second round. Cowan, a Wyoming native, came into his clash with Henry Charles as overwhelming favourite; but the British 25-year old proved the better player on the day as he advanced in straight sets. Elsewhere, fellow teenager Zhijun gave up a one-set to love lead against Hungarian Zoltan Varga to bow out in three sets. Varga produced some sparkling tennis against the talented youngster to advance to a third round clash with Croat Miroslav Brdar. Talking to the Monaco press, Varga told of his excitement of making it past a top ten player. "I think I can be good enough to make the top ten," Varga said. "To win today was very good for my confidence after some bad tennis so far this year."

Mustard gutted after going out in that round especially after coming back in the second set. Will need to work on third set play.

CWLand will be absent at the quarterfinals of the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters after their final two players were knocked out overnight. Sven Oxenstierna and Jefferson Drake failed to cause upsets in their respective third round matches; both bombing out in straight sets. It was always going to be tough for Oxenstierna as he faced red-hot Daniel Páez Blanco of Spain; but the sixth seed troubled the thirteenth seed early was some impressive tennis. But Blanco held firm and broke The Ox late in the set to take the first set 7-5. The second set saw a more convincing Blanco, as the man proclaimed the best player on clay eased towards a blockbuster quarterfinal clash with Jason Hall with a 7-5 6-2 win.

In another third round clash, Drake was also humbled by Serbian second seed Radivoj Daneu. Drake, whose clay form has been surprisingly superb as of late, didn't come into the match with the fire he has as of late against the South American players and suffered his first clay defeat in seven games. It's worth noting that this was Drake's first match on the surface against higher ranked opposition, and he was left wanting as Daneu surged to a dominant 6-3 6-2 victory.

Seeds Out: 3-Radek Špidla (CZE); 6-Sven Oxenstierna (CWL); 13-Jefferson Drake (CWL); 16-József Boros (HUN).

Twelfth seed Daniel Páez Blanco has confirmed his spot as the best player on clay as he smashed world number one Jason Hall in straight sets in the quarterfinals of the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters. Blanco
will face fellow European Illya Altman in the semifinals, and will come in as overwhelming favourite following a 6-4 6-3 win. Blanco rarely looked troubled by a frustrated Hall; the Spaniard forcing his American opponent to do all the running and little of the controlling as he strolled to an impressive victory. The Ukrainian Altman also looked good as he came back from a set down to defeat China's Li Wang in three sets. Altman dropped the first set 3-6, but stormed back in impressive style to secure an impressive victory.

Elsewhere, Miroslav Brdar will play his fourth career semifinal following an upset win over world number two Radivoj Daneu. Daneu, who had won the previous two Masters Series tournaments to start the season, was caught off guard by some impressive tennis from the Croat. In a tight tussle, Brdar set up a semifinals clash with unseeded Brit Henry Charles 6-4 7-6(2). The victory for Charles marks the first time he's made it past the quarterfinals after four previous losses - in Chennai, Dubai, Memphis and also Indian Wells. He took little time in dispatching Tiago Matias in straight sets as he moves into the semis as massive underdog.

Seeds Out: 1-Jason Hall (USA); 2-Radivoj Daneu (SRB); 11-Tiago Matias (POR).
