The Pursuit of Glory - A New Zealand Story

Michaelf7777777

International Debutant
Welcome to the year 2017. New Zealand a side on the up under coach Shane Warne who has been in charge since 2012 has seen a positive transformation into a side that plays above themselves, always backs themselves from any position and in Noel Steele has found a leg spinner which many experts say rivals Warne himself for his bowling abilities and performances. New Zealand are preparing to host Sri Lanka in a 2 test series at home with the tests being played at the Basin Reserve in Wellington and at the University Oval in Dunedin.

2017 Players in or on verge of international setup

Openners

Marcus Martyn (Northern Districts) RHB (c) - Age 26, 37 tests 4523 at 70.67 HS: 314 16 Centuries and 17 Fifties - A top class openner who struggled initally in test cricket taking 5 tests to get a century a 314 against Australia but since then has gone from strength to strength both with the batting and with the captaincy since the retirement of Jesse Ryder in 2015. He will miss the Sri Lankan series being out with a hamstring injury for four weeks

Vic ****er (Auckland) RHB - Age 25, 19 tests, 1654 runs at 50.12 HS:177 7 centuries and 5 fifties - An agressive openner who can get his team off to a flying start but gets out often through brain explosions and can be inconsistant.

Peter Fulton (Canterbury) RHB - Age 37, 29 tests, 1956 at 39.92 HS: 122 4 centuries and 10 fifties - Fulton has been one of the top consistant performers on the domestic circut over the past decade but has struggled to transfer these performances to the higher level of international cricket apart from his centuries in both the semi and the final of the 2011 world cup which makes him a popular player with the New Zealand fans.

Middle Order Batsman

Adam Dial (Auckland) RHB - Age 31, 60 tests, 5284 runs at 50.81 HS: 171 15 centuries and 27 fifties - One of the experienced veterans of the New Zealand side he is yet to lose his agressive intent and brillant strokemaking but is not the best at grinding out an innings.

Ross Taylor (Central Districts) RHB - Age 32, 44 tests, 2732 runs at 36.43 HS: 166 5 centuries and 11 fifties - Very agressive middle order batsman who can smash quick fire centuries but is also prone to brain explosions, has played most of his ODI's and some of his tests as an openning batsman.

Robert Nicol (Auckland) RHB - Age 33, 67 tests 6623 runs at 63.68 HS: 190* 22 centuries and 32 fifties - Highly gritty and defensive middle order batsman who has specialised in getting the team out of difficult situations. However with the recent upturn in results his average has declined as he hasn't needed to do the rescue job which he specialises at as often.

Nicholas Keen (Central Districts) RHB - Age 19, 2 tests 118 runs at 39.33 HS: 87* 0 centuries and 1 fifties - Highly agressive highly talented youngster who played a brillant explosive second innings 87* against Pakistan to see us home by 5 wickets on debut but has done little else so far in tests. Has also shown himself to be a handy death bowler with his part time leg spinners in Pakistan.

All Rounders

Mark Marsden (Northern Districts) RHB LS - Age 24, 31 tests 2121 runs at 43.29 HS:179 6 centuries and 9 fifties and 139 wickets at 32.55 with Best Bowling of 6/53 - A top class all rounder who does a decent job at number 6 and plays an important role as spin support for Noel Steele where although he doesn't take to many wickets himself he has a habit of getting top order batsman out.

Robert Duckworth (Central Districts) RHB RMF - Age 29, 12 tests 656 runs at 34.53 HS: 153 1 century and 2 fifties and 17 wickets at 51.94 BB: 4/105 - An allrounder who has been near the top of the bowling averages as well as being decent with the bat over many seasons at 1st class level but has proved to be mediocre at best in international cricket

James Franklin (Wellington) LHB LFM - Age 36, 89 tests, 3764 runs at 38.41 HS: 184* 3 centuries and 23 fifties and 292 wickets at 32.36 BB: 7/84 - A highly consistant top class seamer who has lead the New Zealand attack with great effort since the retirement. Has also played numerous useful supporting knocks in teh lower order

Wicketkeepers

Brendon McCullum (vc) (Canterbury) RHB WK - Age 35, 93 tests 6673 runs at 52.96 HS: 253* 16 centuries and 26 fifties 230 catches and 27 stumpings - A world class wicket keeper batsman now past his peek but his performances with both bat and gloves mean that many experts rank him as the greatest keeper-batsman ever.

Tim Weston (Central Districts) RHB WK - Age 34, 6 tests 350 euns at 35.00 HS:102* 1 century and 2 fifties 6 catches
- As McCullums backup has not had many opportunities but has been reliable on the few occasions he has gotten to play. Did a good job a few seasons back as an emergency openner on the tour of Pakistan after an injury crisis

Bowlers

Noel Steele (Wellington) RHB LS - Age 28, 42 tests 339 wickets at 23.55, BB: 10/41 - A world class leg spinner who many consider one of the all time greats. Has won us many games from the dead but is in a bit of a form slunp by his high standards at the moment.

Warren McSkimming (Otago) RHB RM - Age 37, 49 tests, 115 wickets at 43.79 BB: 6/38 - A hard workman like medium pacer who doesn't usually take to many wickets but can hold an end down well so that the bowlers at the other end get the glory.

Robin Atkin (Wellington) RHB RM - Age 29, 6 test 16 wickets at 34.19 BB: 5/40 - A decent medium pacer who got selected a year ago due a 6 wicket haul against a touring England team and has done a serviceable job keeping his place due to noone banging hard on the door in First Class cricket.

Coming up: 1st Test against Sri Lanka

ICC3 to tell you the truth although I think its partly luck and partly that my batting for a long time (apart from Marty, Nicol and to a lesser extent McCullum) have been having brain explosion collapses way to often which means that they (Nicol and Martyn) get more not outs than you would expect top order batsman to normally get. I also bought Martyn into the squad at the age of 20 I think and constantly gave him batting technique training unil he turned 25.

Lunch - Day 1 - New Zealand in Trouble at 81-6

Sri Lanka making a brillant start to the 1st test against New Zealand at the Basin Reserve reducing the home side to 81-6 with only Nicholas Keen in only his 3rd test getting more than 11 reaching 24 before being caught at slip going for an expansive drive off Vithirana. Most of the New Zealand wickets falling due to poor batting although Rob Nicol was highly unlucky to be dismissed LBW when the ball pitched a foot outside his leg stump. Malinga taking 3 wickets, Fonseca 2 wickets and Vitharana 1 wicket for Sri Lanka.

New Zealand 81-6
Keen 24 (55)
McCullum 2* (8)
Franklin 4* (10)

Tea - Day 1 - Franklin at McCullum steady the ship - New Zealand 157-6

James Franklin and Brendan McCullum are slowly edging New Zealand towards a steady total here at tea at the Basin Reserve. Franklin can count his lucky stars that he hasn't been dismissed yet however as he was dropped 3 times by the Sri Lankans and also had a very close LBW appeal go his way. Only 7 boundaries were scored without the loss of any wickets at the Basin Reserve. McCullum and Franklin will both be looking for their
50's when play resumes.

New Zealand 157-6
McCullum 43* (103)
Franklin 38* (102)
Malinga 3-61 (19)
Fonseca 2-33 (18)

Stumps - Day 1 - New Zealand back from the brink - New Zealand 258-9

New Zealand have ended the 1st day of the test between New Zealand and Sri Lanka in a decent position at 258-9 although they will reflect on the fact that it could of been a lot worse after being reduced to 77-6 before lunch on the 1st day before McCullum and Franklin put on a stand of 147 for the 7th wicket which wasn't broken until the 2nd new ball when McCullum, Franklin and McSkimming fell in quick succession before Atkin and Steele saw New Zealand through to stumps.

New Zealand 258-9
McCullum 72 (153)
Franklin 69 (184)
Atkin 12* (22)
Steele 9* (23)
Malinga 4-79 (27)
Fonseca 3-55 (25)

Thanks mate, I thought I'd made a mistake deciding to bat first when I slipped to 77-6 but hopefully I've now got enough runs on the board that my 2 front line leg spinners (Marsden and Steele) with a bit of help from Keen (who the game considers a leg spinning all rounder but has a first class bowling average over 40) can bowl me to victory in the 4th innings.

Lunch Day 2 - New Zealand 262 all out, Sri Lanka 56/2

Honours even in the 1st session of day 2 in this test between New Zealand and Sri Lanka. New Zealand could only add 4 to their overnight total before Malinga got Atkin for 16 to complete his 5 for. Franklin and McSkimming took a wicket each as Sri Lanka reached 56/2 at lunch.

Sri Lanka 56/2
Anurassri 21 (54)
De Alwis 15* (39)
Ranath 8* (26)
Franklin 1-20 (8)
McSkimming 1-15 (9)

Tea Day 2 - Marsden and Steele spin New Zealand to 1st Innings Advantage - Sri Lanka 159 all out

A combination of top quality leg spin from Noel Steele and Mark Marsden has seen Sri Lanka collapse to 159 all out giving New Zealand a first innings lead of 103. Steele ripped through the middle order finishing with 4 wickets while Marsden took 3 wickets with Franklin returning to the attack to take the final wicket in the last over before tea. A lot of batsman got starts for Sri Lanka but no one really got going.

Sri Lanka 159 all out
De Alwis 29 (59)
Steele 4-54 (20)
Marsden 3-41 (12)
Franklin 2-20 (8.3)

End of Day 2 - Dial and Nicol rebuild after shocking start to 2nd innings - New Zealand 99-3

Adam Dial and Rob Nicol have reclaimed the inititative for New Zealand at the end of day 2 after Fonseca and Abeywansa had left New Zealand 39-3 before Nicol joined Dial who had already played and missed a lot after Taylor, ****er and Keen had all gotten out playing stupid shots. Dial and Nicol then batted New Zealand through to stumos safely in the good but still perilous position of 99-3 with a lead of 202 a lead which New Zealand will be hoping to at least double tomorrow.

New Zealand 99-3
Dial 46* (83)
Nicol 23* (67)
Fonseca 2-40 (10)

Love seeing Weston in there :p

Stupid question: how many of those newer players exist and how many are made up?

The only real life players in my squad of possibles are Peter Fulton, Ross Taylor, Robert Nicol, James Franklin, Brendon McCullum, Tim Weston and Warren McSkimming.

Weston, I'm sorry to disappoint you is a backup as McCullum has been doing to well to even be considered a possible candidate for dropping (The only time McCullum has actually been injured was on a tour of Bangladesh where I took a 20 year old back up so that he could gain experience).

About your earlier query I had actually started and played this career a while back and reading some of the stories here inspired me to do my own with this as my starting point because it was where I was up to and I wanted to start mine at a different date to the other New Zealand stories on here.

Lunch Day 3 - Nicol and Marsden put New Zealand on top - New Zealand 179-4

Rob Nicol and Mark Marsden have put New Zealand in a position of strength. After Dial suffered from Daniel Flynn syndrome nicking Malinga to be dismissed caught behind for 49 early in the days play Nicol and Marsden have put on a partnership of 72 with Nicol glancing and accumulating with Marsden hitting some terrific drives.

New Zealand 179-4
Nicol 58* (157)
Dial 49 (101)
Marsden 38* (82)
Fonseca 2-55 (18)

Tea Day 3 - New Zealand collapse but still lead by 369 - New Zealand 270-8

New Zealand have collapsed to 270-8 at tea on day 3 due to some good bowling from Sri Lanka and an irresponsible shot from Nicol being caught on the boundary for 85. Franklin and Atkin habe now put on 25 unbeaten to see New Zealand through to tea at 270-8 with a lead of 369 and with 7 sessions left any result is still possible

New Zealand 270-8
Nicol 85 (215)
Dial 49 (101)
Franklin 22* (56)
Atkin 11* (19)
Fonseca 4-82 (27)

Stumps Day 3 - Tail extends New Zealand lead to 416 - Sri Lanka 20-0 needed 397 more to win

Franklin, Atkin and Steele have ground out 43 more important runs after tea on the final day with Franklin being left not out on 43. New Zealand look to be the more likely side to win this match but the Sri Lankan openners got through the 8 overs before stumps without any real problems.

Sri Lanka 20-0
Anurassri 7* (20)
Rajapaske 7* (28)
Franklin 0-9 (4)
McSkimming 0-5 (4)

Weston FTW. Keep McCullum up for 100 tests though:happy:

In a great position here. Should hopefully have the match won

How many years ahead does ICC go out of interest?

Can I skip ahead to year 2300? :p
I don't think theres any limit on how far the game goes - I've heard of people getting up to year 2300 or something ridiculous like that but personally prefer to play 10-20 years with my teams before taking up a new challenge.

Lunch Day 4 - New Zealand get 3 wickets - Sri Lanka 134-3 needing 283 more runs to win

New Zealand have placed themselves in a good position at lunch on day 4, Franklin got the Sri Lankan captain Anurassri out early in the session before Rajapaske and De Alwis continually played and missed at the New Zealand quicks. Steele then came on and grabbed the wickets of both Rajapaske and Ranith before lunch.

Sri Lanka 134-3
Rajapaske 46 (115)
De Alwis 45* (88)
Samartha 3* (7)
Steele 2-32 (10)
Franklin 1-32 (11)

Tea Day 4 -Sri Lanka on top - 250-4 needing 167 more runs to win

De Alwis has completed a fantastic hundred to leave Sri Lanka in with a great chance in the 1st test. Steele got the wicket of Samartha eraly in the session for 12 caught behind by McCullum who had earlier dropped Samartha when he was on 8. After that Steele and Marsden never really looked like taking any wickets apart from the LBW appeal on De Alwis which was wrongly denied by the umpire. De Alwis continues after tea on 107 and he is the key wicket for New Zealand to get.

Sri Lanka 250-4
De Alwis 107* (184)
Jaymon 42* (92)
Steele 3-73 (25)

Stumps Day 4 - Sri Lanka collapse - 340 all out New Zealand win by 76 runs

Sri Lanka have lost their last 6 wickets for 69 runs as New Zealand win the 1st test against Sri Lanka by 76 runs. The 1st wicket to fall in the final session was that of Jaymon who was brillantly caught at short leg by Steele for 47 off the bowling of McSkimming. The next wicket to fall was that of of De Alwis who nicked a Franklin out swinger to first slip where Mark Marsden took the crucial catch. Robin Atkin and Noel Steele then ripped through the tail to give New Zealand a victory in the 1st test

Match Summary
