Somerset

Cricketer Of The Year
Pretty good effort in that 2002 season with a side not considered super strong. Hopefully your side can turn things around after that first up loss in the CC in 03. :)

Changes: Pearce in for Khalid.

A disciplined bowling effort saw us restrict them to a somewhat disappointing total, the turning point being Lungley's dismissal of Coetzer. In the next over, Pearce took three wickets.
Haha, Stuart Coetzer playing for Scotland.

17th April - National League: vs Somerset (H)

Derbyshire Team

Pearce
Khalid
Casey

Katich
Goddard+
Razzak
Jones
Brabin
Sherbourne

Experiment with Pearce opening paid off, as he got us off to a flier. He was dismissed in the 34th over, and from then on all batsmen were given a license, with a few quickfire cameos supporting Khalid, who made his 93 from 85 balls in a fine innings.

A disciplined early bowling effort saw the required rate climb, and from there on the spinners did the work. Pearce, as per usual, went for runs, but always takes wickets doing it. The total was too much for Somerset to contend with.

20th April - County Championship: vs Lancashire (A)

Changes: Head for Clinton.

After winning the toss on a pitch with a bit in it, it was another disaster in the first innings as we were routed, losing the whole side 13 minutes before lunch. After reaching 1/49, the rest of the day was washed out, maybe this will be our hope!

The following day, clear skies greeted us, and despite Lancs passing us only two down, a great spell from Razzak and Brabin brought us back into the game. This was finished off by Sherbourne, who took 4 as well.

After a steady start, we went from 0/30 to 4/37. A mini revival was headed by Khalid and Katich, but the former was dismissed with two overs left in day 2, to kill any momentum, as we were 5/97 overnight, a lead of 3. This wasn't helped when Goddard was out first ball next day. Somewhat of a procession followed, and only Razzak provided any resistance.

We were left only defending 37, which was never going to be enough. Once again, our first innings batting cost us dearly, and changes will have to be made.

Readjusted my aims. Wanting to create the nucleus of a team that can play for the next few years. Will give my youth plenty of opportunities, rotating them through the side when possible to see who shows enough potential. Hoping to avoid relegation. Am regretting not selecting an opener from overseas, not sure what benefit Katich will bring.

27th April - County Championship: vs Essex (H)

Changes: Hopps for Brabin.

Head scored his first half century, but despite that we were four down not after lunch. Nethercott came to the rescue, with support from Katich and Goddard. After the fall of Nethercott, the rest of the wickets fell reasonably quickly, with Test pacer Terry Collins doing most of the damage.

In reply, Jones displayed a welcome return to form, whilst Razzak applied a lot of pressure. All the bowlers performed reasonably well on a good batting wicket.

Pearson stood up with a massive captain's knock, and after being 5/185, him and Razzak got us through Day 3, and allowed the declaration to come early on the last day, leaving 345 in just under 6 hours.

The compexion of the game changed when the ball was thrown to Razzak for the first over after lunch. He would bowl unchanged throughout the rest of the day, taking a masterful 6 wicket haul as we notched up what was, in the end, a comfortable victory.

1st May - National League: vs Worcestershire (A)

Changes: Head replaces Casey, and opens the batting. Sked debuts and takes the gloves off Goddard. Keeping Hopps in, give Brabin a continued rest.

Had them on the ropes, with Jones taking three early wickets. Dropped catches, and a poor spell from Pearce, saw the opposition gain the momentum, and they ended up setting a fairly challenging total on a difficult surface.

After a steady start, we lost 3/0 in three balls, and from then on never recovered.

4th May - Challenge Trophy: vs Suffolk (A)

Changes: Katich in for Khalid, Sherbourne replaced by White and Supple in for Wilcox.

Was all relatively smooth sailing, until a 120 run last wicket partnership got Suffolk dreaming. In the end, a comfortable victory.

11th May - County Championship: vs Leicestershire (A)

Changes: Head makes way for Supple.

A disciplined bowling effort, was somewhat thwarted by the innings of Dippenaar, and some late runs from Boyce. Razzak and Sherbourne were both excellent.

A wonderful captain's knock that lasted for the best part of a day saw Derby's take a lead. Support came from Katich and Khalid, as things swayed in our favour.

What followed was a very poor bowling display, which saw our two main strike bowlers Jones and Sherbourne leak runs everywhere. It was only thanks to the efforts of Hopps and, especially, Razzak, that we were in a position to chase anything.

Supple and Pearson started off the innings in good fashion, but after the dismissal of the former, things started to slow down. Just before tea, the two in batsmen (Pearson and Nethercott were dismissed) leaving us with 6 wickets in hand to chase down 128, with the pitch providing plenty for the bowlers.

France chipped in with a cameo, before Goddard provided the impetus in combination with Khalid needed for a win in the penultimate over
