A Finger injury to Sarwan has ruled out the VC for the 1st Test.

In his place comes Wavell Hinds as a straight swap into Number 5.

West Indies won the toss and batted.

Day comments - A tough days test cricket to start a very tough tour for this young side. A solid start by the openers was rocked when both fell on the hour. Shiv and Brian batted the side to 140/4 before Shiv was out to the impressive Kartik. The Elegent one Marlon Samules made a paitent 41 and played the spinners well in his return to test cricket. Captain Lara looked in ominous form beofr ebeing bowled by the ever hard toiling Kumble just 4 short of a 100. Samulea and Bravo fell late to the new ball but WI held on in the last 10 overs

Day 2 plan. Bat the first hour. Push up towards 330+. Bowl good lines and stay paitent with Powell and Collymore. Look to rock India early with a spell from Lawson. Braco, Gayle, Samules and Hinds will all be expected to chip in and contribute.

Powell 1/58 (15)

Day 2 Summary - The Wi tail went quickly, as has become the habit over a number of years. Overall the bowlers were a little wayward. Over 300 runs in 80 overs is not the plan we awere looking to execute. Bravo and Collymore were steady and Lawson produced some good deliveries. The wickets of Teldulkar and Laxman in the last hour has kept us in the game.

Day 3 Plan. Bowl India out for under 400 and wipe out the lead with a maximum of 3 wickets down. A lead of over 200 and we are a chance on a 4th, 5th day wicket

Day 3 Summary - WI bowled poorly on day 3. India were allowed to escape all the wya past 500 sue to the lack of firepower and ability to sustain pressure from the bowlers. Lawson looked the most threatening but he too looked underdone. After Gayle played a wild shot to be dismissed early Smith and Shiv batted mafullt for 35 overs to keep Wi in the game going into day 4.

Day 4 plan - Bat all day and build a lead of 150-200. Wont be easy on a wicket starting to take Kumble and Kartiks spin.

Day 4 Summary - Wi were on the back foot immediately as both Smith and Shiv were caught in close off the turning ball without addition. Hinds also fell looking a man a long way out of form. When lara fell after a falshy 53 WI were all but done despite some lower order resistance from young Ramdin.

Match summary - Most batsman made starts. Need to be more techniqally sound against the spin. Bowling was wayward and without penetration. Sarwan if fit will come in for hinds and Mcgarell or Banks will be considered in place of one of the 3 quicks or Bravo.

Day 1 Thoughts - Excellent effort by the WI slightly spoiled by Hinds falling to the last ball of the day. Gayle and Smith put on 100 for Lunch with Gayle at his free flowing best. Shiv would fall before tee but Smith battled on hard for a gutsy long innings which was finished after over 4 hours at the crease. Hinds made a watchful 29 whilst lara also was strangely subdued in a discipline effort by the WI

Day 2 and 3 Summary - Wi crumbled to be all out 330 with the lower order having little idea against a rampnat kumble and singh. Lara made another brilliant 100 and he is leading by example. Wi with the ball had their chances but put down some offerings and let India off off hook after being 100/3. Mcgarell toiled away well but lost his line late in his spell as his figures blew out. Powell looked dangerous early but fell away. Gayle bowled well. Wi lost Smith early in the second innings and are some in a very similar position going into day 4 as in the 1st test. With Kumble and Singh smelling blood i think only Shiv and Lara stand in the way of another big Indian victory but we will be fighting.

Again a horrible collapse after the top order against layed a strong foundation. Being 266/3 in the 1st innings and 210/3 in the 2nd innings shows WI put them themselves in good positions in this match. Unfortunetly the middle and lower order rmain cluless against the spin and once Gayle was unluckily out for 99 and Lara bowled for 54 Wi crumbled.

Sarwan will be fit for the 3rs Test. Other players in contention will be Pedro Collins and Fidel Edwards with Bravo also back in the mixer.

amtch comments - toothless effort by the bowlers on a wicket with assistance on the 1st day. Edwards bowled horrible, he has alot to learn. Powell was unlucky and plugged awat hard. Only Smith and Lara made runs amoung the bats in the first innings both batting with some paitence. Lower order partnership of 80 between mcgarell and powell was a highlight. WI made a much better fist in the second innings with shiv scoring a very determined 100 and sarwan, gayle and smith all notching half tons. However by then the match was long gone and with only 1 test to play India have wrapped it up in convincing style.

Edwards wont be selected for the final test. Bravo is back in the mix as well as Lawson and Collins.

I played a 7 match ODI series in India. This is due to my computers abiliuty to save the game at the start of the match, play the match, quit and then play it again. I keep all my own stats obviously as my fixture list is not that of whatr will show in the records of the game

Anyway India won the 7 match series 5-2

Sarwan and Chanderpaul were consistently very good at the top. West Indies made positive starts to a number of chases before falling away badly. The bowlers all toiled without having any wicket taking ability. India always made steady starts but exploded in the last 10 overs as they had wickets in hand at all times. Collymore, Gayle and Mcgarell were the 3 most ocnsistent bowlers without being great.

Lara at one stage looked like he might do the miracle as he haunted the SA team again just like in the first game of the tornament. Ultimately Wi lost a few close games in this WC due to the middle order of Hinds and Samules who never delivered when the heat was on. Summary - A close fought test match. With Hinds going off injured and not out in the first innings and unable to bat in the second it might of made the difference in the match. Hinds is now out for 11 weeks and will miss the whole Caribbean summer. I thought in this game my fast bowlers showed some promise. Young Taylor bowled very well beating batsman for pace on a number of occasions. Collymore was back to his best nagging away and producing wickets with deliveries that nipped around. Lawson also showed promise although he bowled inconsistently. With the batting the middle order remained the problem with not ewnoguh runs from Samules,Bravo and Ramdin. Lara played a really speical innings once more and seems to be in some of the form of his life.

Bravo 0/14 (5)

NZ win by 6 wickets

Summary - A dissapointing result. After grafting away with the ball with some discipline bowling from bravo and Mcgarell especially we batted with carelessness on a flat wicket in Antigua. A unacceptable collapse from the top order led to disaster of just 120. The openers applied themselves much better in the second innings and the top 3 all cashed in without going on. Again a retired hurt, Smith will miss the remaining two tests and him having to go off caused a sway in the mommentum of thematch, Laras double failure in Antigua came as a real surprise and dissapointment. Taylor was super impressive with the ball and the Wi might of just unleashed a new bowling star. On a wicket starting to turn mcgarelll did not cpaitalise when a sniff of victory was there on day 5.

Match drawn

Summary - The Wi held on for a draw here in Barbados in a long , grinding match. The stars for the WI was Chanderpual who batted for very long periods and played 2 unflappable innings bo5th under extreme pressure. Bond seems to have Lara on the rack and he is now looking very bad at the start of his innings and getting out. Samules again failed to deliver and chances are running out for him. A disspaointing match for Coolymore and Mcgarell with the ball.
