Bangladesh: A quest for glory. [Mediocre ICC 2005 tale]

First test v South Africa.

H Ismail had nearly the worst debut a player could have. He scored 7 in the first innings and only 1 in the second. At least he didn't get a duck.

We batted on a good pitch and wanted to build a nice total before days out.
After Ismail fell early Iqbal and Aftabd Ahmed looked set for a combined 62.
Iqbal fell and Ahmed hung around with 3 more batsman until he was out for 71.

At 7 for 165 in the final session for the day is not what we wanted. When Elias Sunny strolled out to the crease to join Arif Ahmed, you could sense he wasn't intending on getting out. Not today anyway.

Ahmed and Sunny batted out the day and a bit of the next with a vital 61 run partnership.
What came next was even more amazing. Arafat Sunny and Arif Ahmed hitting 120 for 9th wicket and taking Bangladesh past 350.

Ishraq Sonet made the odd choice of opening the bowling with Nazmul Hossain, due to a spin and batting heavy side.
This odd choice paid off though as Sonet bowled Puttick for 7.

Then things went sour as South Africa raced to 172 but soon we were on the backfoot as they lost two wickets for no runs and the spinners started to dominate.
Gibbs started well before playing a soft shot and out for 24, South Africa 4-231.
Bangladesh wouldn't see another wicket fall for 106 runs and the shoulders slumped as Ruldolph plundered the runs. He finally fell for 172, and when he was gone the rest steadily fell too, not without adding 70 more.


South Africa with a lead of 50 broke through early gettinh Ismail for 1 then Aftab Ahmed for a duck.

Then Ishraq Sonet did what hes been threatening to do for so long now.

He finally scored a hundred.

In all his games (as captain, too) this young batsman has been superb to watch, with excellent timing on the off side, and a dazzling pull.
But he's been the victim of his captaincy, trying to score too much too quickly.

Now he was patient, playing the perfect captains knock, making sure Bangladesh went embarressed.

His partnership of 205 with Iqbal is the second highest for Bangladesh. They could've added more if their momentum wasn't interrupted by the rain. When they came back on they were both soon out along with Atiqur Rahman. But the rain was long and the match ended up as a draw.

2nd Test Match.

We batted first again and seemed to be going fine at 3-130. Arif Ahmed was promoted to opener with Ismail being dumped not because of his performance, but for an extra pace bowler.
He was the only player to make something in the innings with 83 trying to hold the top order together.

We were bundled out for 184 in the end..

South Africa batted solidly after the first wicket fell for 3. Runs flowed steadily and the wickets didn't fall together like Bangladesh.
Gibbs missed out on a century with 94.

The second innings looked worse when Bangladesh were 6 for 97. A partnership like the first game was needed and it was delivered by Rajin Saleh and Elias Sunny with a marathon stand for a day which saw 162 addded for the 7th wicket.

It wasn't enough though with South Africa needing just over 100 for victory, though losing 4 wickets in the process.

And that concludes the 2007 season. Disappointed we lost the home series to South Africa. Next is a tour of the West Indies.

After that season Arif Ahmed is ranked 3rd in the world batting ranks and Nafees Iqbal is 5th with Aftab Ahmed next at 16 followed by Rajin Saleh at 17.
Manjural Islam is 5th in the bowling department.

Nafees Iqbal is 12th in the ODI list and Aftab Ahmed 15th and Manjural Islam at 15 for bowling.

Next is the 2nd test match.

Struggled in the first innings of the 2nd test which was saved by Manjural islam's trademark tail end saving slogs of 86 with a partnership fo 74 for the 9th wicket with Syed Rasel.

C Baugh is to date the most annoying batsmen I've bowled to. And he was extremely lucky. In his innings of 99 he had 11 dropped catches and 13 turned down LBW appeals.

I wish we could improve fielding skill.

Anyway, as WI batted so long (after they lost two quick wickets to be 5 down they scored only 30 in a session) time was running out and once we got a sizeable lead to defend there wasn't enough time to bowl them out (I wasn't prepared to back myself) so I selfishly let my batters play out for a draw.

Ahmed nearly got Bangladesh's first double century. Easily player of the series with 427 runs @ 106.75.

Atiqur Rahman is aged 22 and has 1146 runs @ 33.71 in 19 tests and 35 innings with 12 fifties and zero hundreds. Highest score of 89.
The nation awaits his maiden test century.

Meanwhile, Naeem Islam scored his first maiden century - 101 not out - to silence critics who called him a 'one day wonder' and a 'flash in the pan'. Selectors had favoured shuffling Manjural up the order and bringing Arafat Sunny into the side or another batsmen from the 20 man squad. in an unpopular move, manager Greg Thomas put his faith in the young batsman.
In 5 tests and 9 innings he had scored 60 runs with a high score of 33. In the first innings he scored just 23 and everyone thought he had failed again...but he fired when Bangladesh had lost quick wickets and needed a gritty innings, which he did, off 184 balls.

If Aftab Ahmed wasn't injured...hey may have scored 1000 runs in a year. 849 in six games, 12 innings, 2 not outs, 3 centuries and 5 fifties at an average of 84.90.

We batted for ages as they bowled tight (202 overs!). Any aggressive play got the batsman out immediately So we relied on our bowling which nearly broke through...but the last 3 wickets cost around 70 runs so bowling them out quickly in the 2nd innings didn't eventuate. A drawn series in South Africa betters our result from there last time (lost series).
