Bangladesh: A quest for glory. [Mediocre ICC 2005 tale]

Somerset

Cricketer Of The Year
Great job with such an inexperienced side, almost could've been a 2-0 series win for the Bangladeshis if England hadn't managed to hold on in their second innings on both occasions.

Good start on the first day :) lost Islam early on :( Then Iqbal when he was looking set for a century. Aftab Ahmed becomes the first player under my regime to score 2 centuries!

All out just before the end of day 2 with a good defendable score. We need to bowl tight. It seems there is a bit of turn on this pitch but NZ didn't have any spinners to exploit it so it looks as though we could. :)

Atiqur Rahman's 69 was a good stable innings after we lost a couple of quick wickets. The captain Sonet was out 47 and his failure to convert starts into big scores worries me.
I guess he's just like his opposite number, Fleming :-O :-O :-O.

Manjural Islam once again provided late order resistence with 46...

NZ came into bat late on the 2nd day and looked wobbly. They lost Fleming and McMillan early on the third day to be 2-33. NZ batted slow and cautious and we didn't knock them over quick enough or exploit opportunity's.

Jacob Oram got to 103 with support from Fulton, Richardson and Sinclair. When Oram was out Astle and Sinclair hung around but once Astle (59) was gone it didn't improve much with McCullum hanging around (albeit for 22) while Sinclair went to 130. Manjural bowled well and a lot, taking 5-129 from 40 overs. NZ all out 381.

We didn't get them out quick enough so when we came back in to bat late on day four with a lead of just 86 we would have to bat quickly.
After a good opening partnership (59) we lost a few wickets and were 4-100, a lead of 186 before lunch on the final day. This wouldn't be enough to defend over two sessions so we played for a draw, not looking to pull off any spectacular win. Negative, maybe. Smart, yes.

Aftab Ahmed edged to another century (and a half!) with no less than 6 partners. Manjural Islam once again showed his all round class with 72. Ahmed was out slogging in the final few overs for 157, the first batter to get a century in both innings and 3 centuries in total for me. :)

In the end, a good draw for us.

Bangladesh won by 6 wickets.
MOTM: Aftab Ahmed.

What a game! We had NZ on the ropes in the 1st innings and would have knocked them over for a low score if it weren't for Fulton (who deserved a century).
We batted poorly though and no one could get set, except Sunny who on debut belted 43 to go with his 6 wickets for the match.
We had to knock over NZ quickly so we wouldn't be chasing a massive score and we did it early on day four!
Everyone shared in the wickets...with Manjural Islam the star once again.
We had plenty of time to run down the score but we could easily repeat the first innings.
Lost Iqbal with the score on 2 then Arif Ahmed at 16 followed by captain Sonet with the score of 51.
R Saleh who hasn't been having a great time lately, combined with the star man in form Aftab Ahmed. Their slow but sure 141 partnership for the 4th wicket set us up for the win. Though Saleh was out for 62, Ahmed continued with Rahman (37) to get the remaining 80 runs.

Aftab Ahmed scored his 4th century this season remaining unbeaten on 141, winning the match.

His position was under threat before this series. Last year he scored 172 runs in 8 innings at 21.50 with only one 50.

Currently he has 697 runs from 12 innings at 63.36 and four centuries!

:)

Hopefully he can continue his form into the ODI series.

That was our first series win against New Zealand! :)

Well, the World Cup has been and gone. To be honest, I don't feel like posting all the results as I'm not interested in ODI's at this stage. However we did make the Super 8 but only won two of our matches (vs South Africa, and a very unlikely and remarkable win vs England).

So now it's time for the home series vs New Zealand.

Good start! Didn't seem all that well, though being 5-200. I thought we'd make 300, tops. Aftab Ahmed (61) and Atiqur Rahman (54) both scored good fifties before losing their wicket. Manjural Islam went on and made his first hundred..something which he'd been threatening to do except for the fact he seemed to be always saving tests with 50's and 60's. Although the keeper's 100 was pretty classy. A very fine innings.

Syed Rasel was doing great lower order resistence when he got hit in the head on 29 and retired hurt, leaving us with one seamer.

I think this match will be a draw.

Edit: Maybe not. After the captain Sonet and his swinging medium pacers partnered Hossains fast bowling the Sunny boys came on to bowl and ripped the NZ batting line up to shreds...

Further edit: Wow. Easy. Far too easy. Seems this NZ team can't play spin at all. They did better than their first innings but we ended up winning by an innings.

Aftab Ahmed bowled some superb deliveries and was rewarded with 2 wickets for 34 runs. Hossain took 2 for 77 and Manjural Islam bowled 16 overs for 20 runs for no wicket.

Things are looking good to have another series win over NZ!
Bangladesh all out 473.

Shafaq Al-zabir in to replace Syed Rasel. I chose him over Nazmul Hossain because he's a left handed bowler and Rezaul Haque isn't doing well at all in FC.

Aaaargh! We were so close to a series clean sweep!

NZ quicks got revenge for the first test, knocking over our batsmen for 143 then their batsmen getting 364. We made a small lead but couldn't get them out so the series was drawn 1-1. Great knock by captain Sonet who hasn't had a crash hot 12 months to save us from an innings defeat backed up by Arif Ahmed then Elias Sunny.

Bangladesh all out 143.
