Surrey 2002: A Cricket Captain Diary

SIX AND OUT

U19 12th Man
A CRICKET CAPTAIN DIARY

15 APRIL 2002
Surrey draft Michael Robinson from the Youth Team. Michael’s contract is for 2 years at $18,000. He is a 21 year old off-spin bowler who can be quite handy down the tail. “It is great to be playing with such a strong team, and in such a successful side”. Michael said. Coach Mick Rogers had this to say “With our senior players looking for International duty, and a long season ahead, it is good to have depth in our bowling department” “He should play his first game this season, but he will be regular for sure, in years to come”

17 APRIL 2002
Surrey captain Adam Hollioake is still recovering from a knee injury and will miss the first three weeks of the season. Mark Ramprakash will replace Hollioake as captain for the first 2 county championship matches, and 6 super cup matches.
Michael Carberry has broken his right index finger and will be out for 3-4 weeks.

18 APRIL 2002
Surrey name a 12 man-squad for the County Championship match against Sussex at The Oval - they are : Mark Ramprakash (capt), Mark Butcher, Alec Stewart, Graham Thorpe, Ali Brown, Sam Newman, Ian Ward, Martin Bicknell, Saqlain Mushtaq, James Ormond, Alex Tudor and Eddie Giddins.
Sam Newman comes in for his first-class debut, replacing Adam Hollioake.

19 - 21 APRIL 2002
Day 1: Surrey v Sussex, County Championship - SURREY - 332 (M Butcher 166, M Ramprakash 90, J Lewry 5/78) leads SUSSEX - 0/0 by 332 runs.
A great innings by Mark Butcher has put us in a position to win this match. We were sent in to bat and when Alec Stewart went out in the third over, we knew this pitch was hard to play. Ramprakash went out in the 90, and put on 187 for the second wicket with Butcher. Butcher and Thorpe added another 90 runs before the collapse, which resulted in 7 wickets for only 19 runs. With that in mind, we will be hoping the pitch can help us tomorrow and set us up for a win.
Day 2: Surrey v Sussex, County Championship - SURREY 332 leads SUSSEX 157 (P Cottey 46, S Mushtaq 7/21) & 150/3 (M Goodwin 73*, C Adams 42) by 25 runs.
What a day, the bowlers used the pitch to advantage as good as they could. Martin Bicknell got two early breakthrough’s at the start of play, but Saqlain Mushtaq rapped the game up with one of the best displays of spin bowling I have ever seen. He tied Sussex right down, and ended up getting 7/21 off 17.2 overs, forcing just over 1 run per over. We bowled them out before Tea, and sent them into bat again as we could enforce the follow-on. A better display by there top order put them out of danger, but two late wickets to Saqlain has put them back on the ropes. We need to get Goodwin early before he makes a big hundred.
Day 3: Surrey v Sussex, County Championship - SURREY 332 & 155/1 (A Stewart 80*, M Ramprakash 32*) beat SUSSEX 157 & 329 (M Goodwin 86, D Clapp 71, M Bicknell 7/65, S Mushtaq 3/73) by 9 wickets.
We wrapped this match up just before stumps. Sussex surprised us with an awesome batting display, but Martin Bicknell and Saqlain Mushtaq once again just didn’t stop trying. Bicknell got figures of 7/65, getting 9 for the game, and taking his first-class career tally past 900. Mushtaq got another 10 wicket match after taking 3 in the second innings. Alec Stewart helped us home scoring 80 off only 79 balls.

23 APRIL 2002
Surrey name a 12 man-squad for the County Championship match against Yorkshire at Headingley - they are : Mark Ramprakash (capt), Mark Butcher, Alec Stewart, Graham Thorpe, Ali Brown, Nadeem Shahid , Ian Ward, Martin Bicknell, Saqlain Mushtaq, James Ormond, Alex Tudor and Ian Salisbury.

24-27 APRIL 2002
Day 1: Yorkshire v Surrey, County Championship - YORKSHIRE 299 (D Lehmann 100, A McGrath 52, M Bicknell 5/69) leads SURREY 53/2 (G Thorpe 38*) by 246 runs.
A bad start to this match, even though we did better than what may have happened. Yorkshire made an impressive and quick start, firing at 4 an over to our attack. Darren Lehmann made a great hundred, helped by Ashley McGrath, but once those two left Martin Bicknell once again took control. Bicknell took another 5 wickets, and the ever-expensive Alex Tudor chipped in with 3 valuable wickets. We lost both openers, in the first two overs. A big partnership between Mark Ramprakash and Graham Thorpe is needed.
Day 2: Yorkshire v Surrey, County Championship - YORKSHIRE 299 & 91/2 (M Wood 39*) lead SURREY 263 (M Ramprakash 103, G Thorpe 81, G Hamilton 4/90) by 127 runs.
A big partnership between Ramprakash and Thorpe did keep us in the game, but they still lead us going into the third day. Ramprakash played shots all around the ground, and took him to keep an average of over 100 this season. Martin Bicknell took a wicket in the last over of the day, and that of Darren Lehmann, to put us in a position to let Saqlain rip through the middle-order and tail on a wearing pitch.
Day 3: Yorkshire v Surrey, County Championship - YORKSHIRE 299 & 310 (M Wood 64, G Hamilton 47, M Bicknell 4/80) leads SURREY 263 & 71/0 (A Stewart 37*) by 291 runs.
Pretty disappointing day, we didn’t bowl well at all, except for the one and only Martin Bicknell. Bicknell took 4 wickets, and worked tirelessly hard. The middle-order all scored consistent 30 and 40 to take a second innings total to over 300. We require 363 to win, a big task and it will take a huge effort, but we are one step there, with a good end to day 3, losing no wickets and scoring freely, but with rain threatening, we need to keep our wickets in hand and may need to force a draw.
Day 4: Yorkshire v Surrey, County Championship - YORKSHIRE 299 & 310 drew with SURREY 263 & 127/3 (M Butcher 46)
We lost Stewart in the first over of the day, and Butcher shortly after, but rain secured a draw. 3 wickets were lost for 56 runs on a damp pitch, and if it wasn’t for the rain we would have lost it. We could only play 90 minutes of the day which would of really upset Darren Lehmann and his team mates. Martin Bicknell was named Man of the Match as a reward for his efforts, but we have lost top place on the table to Hampshire.

Surrey name a 12 man-squad for the Super Cup match against Middlesex at Lords - they are : Mark Ramprakash (capt), Mark Butcher, Alec Stewart, Graham Thorpe, Ali Brown, Nadeem Shahid , Ian Ward, John Ratcliffe, Martin Bicknell, James Ormond, Alex Tudor and Michael Robinson.
Michael Robinson comes in for his one-day debut, as Saqlain Mushtaq is rested.

28 APRIL 2002
Middlesex v Surrey, Super Cup - SURREY 269/5 (M Ramprakash 81, G Thorpe 54*, A Stewart 54) beat MIDDLESEX 215 (O Shah 53, D Nash 49, M Butcher 3/30, M Robinson 3/47) by 54 runs.
A good start to the Super Cup tournament, we won this tournament last year, and have continued our good form in the short form of the game. Mark Ramprakash has started with a flourish, making runs and making them count. He produced another high score, and we were helped by two half-centuries by Graham Thorpe and Alec Stewart. Middlesex needing 270 to win started well, but youngster Michael Robinson on debut took two vital wickets, those of Andrew Strauss and Abdul Razzaq. Mark Butcher was our fifth bowler as Adam Hollioake is still outed by injury, and he produced 3 wickets, and was on a hat-trick at one point.

30 APRIL 2002
Surrey name a 12 man-squad for the Super Cup matches against Hampshire at The Oval and Essex at Chelmsford - they are : Mark Ramprakash (capt), Mark Butcher, Alec Stewart, Graham Thorpe, Ali Brown, Nadeem Shahid , Ian Ward, John Ratcliffe, Martin Bicknell, James Ormond, Saqlain Mushtaq and Michael Robinson.

1 MAY 2002
Surrey v Hampshire, Super Cup - SURREY 262/5 (G Thorpe 84*, A Stewart 50, J Ratcliffe 44) beat HAMPSHIRE 172 (J Crawley 44, S Mushtaq 5/40, M Bicknell 3/37) by 86 runs.
Sensational victory against the in-form Hampshire and we put ourselves on top of the league table. We took in two spinners this time, Michael Robinson and Saqlain Mushtaq, who came back into the squad after being rested in the previous match against Middlesex. Mushtaq took 5/40 and completed a brilliant hat-trick. He bowled just as good as he did in the opening Championship match. Martin Bicknell once again bowled with good pace, and was rewarded with 3 wickets.

2 MAY 2002
Essex v Surrey, Super Cup - SURREY 293/5 (A Brown 75*, M Ramprakash 65, G Thorpe 62, J Ratcliffe 44) beat ESSEX 252 (D Robinson 65, J Ormond 3/65) by 41 runs.
3 in a row, and most have been quite a win, this one by 41 runs. Our batting was strongest than it has been all season. Ali Brown made an unbeaten 75 off 50 balls while Ramprakash and Thorpe once again chipped in with fifties. John Ratcliffe has made the most of his inclusion, with two powerful 40’s down the order. James Ormond was expensive but took 3 wickets, as Butcher and Ramprakash finished them off.

3 MAY 2002
Surrey name a 12 man-squad for the Super Cup matches against Kent at The Oval and Sussex at Hove - they are : Mark Ramprakash (capt), Mark Butcher, Alec Stewart, Graham Thorpe, Ali Brown, Rikki Clarke, Ian Ward, John Ratcliffe, Martin Bicknell, James Ormond, Saqlain Mushtaq and Timothy Murtagh.

4 MAY 2002
Surrey v Kent, Super Cup - KENT 254/5 (A Symonds 61, R Key 51) lost to SURREY 256/5 (M Butcher 83, A Brown 81*, G Thorpe 43) by 5 wickets.
We bowled poorly and let them get a good score on a pretty poor pitch to bat on. Andrew Symonds and Robert Key took full advantage of the fielding restrictions early and Mark Butcher got the breakthrough. Martin Bicknell was our best bowler, economically as well, by taking 2/35 off his 10 overs. Chasing 254 we lost Stewart quickly and then Ramprakash followed shortly after, but a 85 partnership by Butcher and Thorpe helped us, and then a quick fire 81 not out from Brown, once again, guided us to victory with 9 overs and 5 wickets in hand.

6 MAY 2002
Sussex v Surrey, Super Cup - SURREY 352/4 (M Ramprakash 145*, A Brown 49, M Butcher 45) beat SUSSEX 241 (C Adams 73, M Goodwin 52, S Mushtaq 3/50, J Ormond 3/71) by 111 runs.
A great display of batting helped Surrey to their fifth win out of five games. Mark Ramprakash made a brilliant unbeaten hundred, ending on 145. Ali Brown played well again as did Mark Butcher. Sussex chased well before collapsing half way through. Rikki Clarke and James Ormond were targeted and smashed for runs, while Saqlain Mushtaq bowled well for his three wickets. They continue to stay on top of the league table.
Surrey’s score of 352/4 is the third highest score by Surrey in a List-A Match.

7 MAY 2002
Surrey name a 12 man-squad for the County Championship match against Lancashire at The Oval - they are : Mark Ramprakash (capt), Mark Butcher, Alec Stewart, Graham Thorpe, Ali Brown, Rikki Clarke, Ian Ward, John Ratcliffe, Martin Bicknell, James Ormond, Saqlain Mushtaq and Michael Robinson.
Adam Hollioake is still unavailable for selection. Michael Robinson has been named for his first-class debut.

8-11 MAY 2002
Day 1: Surrey v Lancashire, County Championship - LANCASHIRE 169 (W Hegg 49, S Mushtaq 7/54) lead SURREY 141/1 (A Stewart 81*, M Ramprakash 33*) by 28 runs.
A big day for us as we are well ahead of Lancashire, even though we are behind. We bowled Lancashire out for 169, and Saqlain Mushtaq once again provided the wickets. Saqlain took 7/54, his second time this season he has taken 7 wickets in an innings. Alec Stewart batted very well till stumps, remaining not out on 81.
Day 2: Surrey v Lancashire, County Championship - LANCASHIRE 169 trail SURREY 445/9 (A Stewart 109, A Brown 107, M Ramprakash 49, C Schofield 5/102)
Two great hundreds from two great people. Alec Stewart needed one for his confidence, and bought it up with a boundary, before going out for 109. Ali Brown also batted very well, making his first hundred for the season, after great form in the Super Cup. We ended up batting the whole day, making a total of 8/304, a pretty good effort. Spinner Christopher Schofield took 5 wickets.
Day 3: Surrey v Lancashire, County Championship - LANCASHIRE 169 and 9/313 (C Schofield 81, S Law 63, W Hegg 61, M Bicknell 4/59, S Mushtaq 4/133) lead SURREY 476 (A Stewart 109, A Brown 107, M Ramprakash 49, S Mushtaq 48*, C Schofield 5/118) by 9 runs.
Saqlain Mushtaq played brilliantly with the bat to have us all surprised. We added 31 runs for the 10th wicket, with Saqlain stranded of a 50, making 48*. Lancashire batted throughout the day to end up with a lead, but have one wicket in hand heading into the last day. Schofield made 81, after a big 5 wicket haul, as it is the spinners match, but the experienced fast bowler Martin Bicknell once again took control. He took 4/59 while the tiring Saqlain Mushtaq finished with 4, but going for 133 runs. The game should be wrapped up tomorrow morning.
Day 4: Surrey v Lancashire, County Championship - LANCASHIRE 169 & 315 (C Schofield 81, S Law 63, W Hegg 61, M Bicknell 5/59, S Mushtaq 4/133) lost to SURREY 476 & 0/9 by 10 wickets.
Another big win for Surrey, keeping there form up. Martin Bicknell got the last wicket, and his fifth for the innings, taking his tally to 5/59. We needed 9 to win, and did it in two overs without losing a wicket. We are now at the top of the table after Hampshire lost outright in there match. We are expecting Adam Hollioake to return, it is going to be hard to find somebody to drop.

Surrey name a 12 man-squad for the National League match against Lancashire at The Oval - they are : Mark Ramprakash (capt), Mark Butcher, Alec Stewart, Graham Thorpe, Ali Brown, Nadeem Shahid, Ian Ward, John Ratcliffe, Martin Bicknell, James Ormond, Saqlain Mushtaq and Michael Robinson.

12 MAY 2002
Surrey v Lancashire, National League - SURREY 209/8 (G Thorpe 49, J Ratcliffe 35, M Robinson 34*, M Smethurst 4/90) beat LANCASHIRE 206/9 (S Law 53, D Byas 37*, A Flintoff 37, M Ramprakash 2/15) by 3 runs.
A very bad match, but we won, somehow. We got off on the back foot, Stewart, Butcher and Ramprakash all out quickly and we were going along slowly to keep the wickets in hand. Graham Thorpe made a manufactured 49 and Ratcliffe a helping 35 but it wasn’t enough. Michael Robinson made a quick 34 to help us to 209/8. Lancashire were going along nicely, and we were troubled as Butcher and Ramprakash had to finish off, but both claimed 4 wickets. Butcher bowled the last over with 4 required, and held it to only 1 run.

14 MAY 2002

19 MAY 2002
Gloucestershire v Surrey, National League - SURREY 214/6 (S Newman 43, I Ward 37, J Ratcliffe 37, J Averis 3/37) beat GLOUCESTERSHIRE 112 (I Fisher 23*, S Mushtaq 4/13) by 102 runs.
After rain, the pitch at Bristol was very bad to play on, but it managed to get the all-clear after all day to dry out, and with the lights on it, it was not an issue. Our batting was okay on the surface we played on, scoring at 4 and a half an over. With a new look side due to International duty, it was a welcome back to captain Adam Hollioake. He kept it together with 32 with the bat, but managed 3 overs before pulling out. Sam Newman came of age with 43, Ratcliffe continued his form to get the total. We bowled Gloucestershire out for a dismal 112, with Saqlain Mushtaq dominating with 4/13. James Ormond managed 3 wickets as well.

20 MAY 2002
Surrey name a 12 man-squad for the Super Cup quarter-final against Hampshire at The Oval - they are : Adam Hollioake (capt), Mark Butcher, Alec Stewart, Scott Newman, Ali Brown, Mark Ramprakash, Graham Thorpe, Ian Ward, Martin Bicknell, James Ormond, Saqlain Mushtaq and Michael Robinson.

21 MAY 2002
Surrey v Hampshire, Super Cup quarter-final - SURREY 230/8 (A Brown 63, A Stewart 56, A Mullally 4/36) beat HAMPSHIRE 176 (A Mascarenhas 74*, M Bicknell 3/28, M Robinson 3/36) by 54 runs.
You never like to lose a final after going the whole tournament unbeaten, well, that almost happened to us today. We managed to get a healthy score though thanks to the runs made by Ali Brown and Alec Stewart, who both batted down the order. Adam Hollioake put himself in to open and went out in the first over to Mullally, not a very good idea. Mullally ripped through the top order and snared Brown, but the late order were helpful scoring well needed runs quickly. Youngster Michael Robinson continuing to keep the lower order above standards. He managed another not out, quick score. When bowling, we got on top early with Martin Bicknell taking 3/28. Saqlain didn’t bowl fluently thanks to a back strain, so the youngster filled in, taking his best figures of 3/36.

Surrey name a 12 man-squad for the County Championship match against Somerset at The Oval - they are : Adam Hollioake (capt), Mark Butcher, Alec Stewart, Scott Newman, Ali Brown, Mark Ramprakash, Graham Thorpe, Ian Ward, Martin Bicknell, James Ormond, Saqlain Mushtaq and Michael Robinson.

23-26 MAY 2002
Day 1: Surrey v Somerset, County Championship - SURREY 369/5 (A Brown 158*, M Ramprakash 77, A Hollioake 60, I Ward 45*) lead SUSSEX by 369 runs.
What a magnificent start, and all set up by Ali Brown’s unbeaten 158. He has beaten every bowler and his hooking and pulling has been a feature. It was also set up by a 128 partnership between Brown and Ramprakash before Ramprakash went for 77. At one stage it was 3/13, another top-order collapse. A 98 Partnership was also scored between Hollioake and Brown. Hollioake making a quick 60 runs, coming off only 36 balls including one huge six over mid-wicket. Ian Ward is still at the crease, eying a half-century. If we can bat most of tomorrow it would be great to post 500 as this pitch will help bowlers day 3 and 4, were we only want to bat once.

Day 2: Surrey v Somerset, County Championship - SURREY 691 (A Brown 338, M Bicknell 120*, M Ramprakash 77, A Hollioake 60, I Ward 50, M Bulbeck 6/163) lead SOMERSET 29/0 (P Bowler 20*) by 662 runs.
Amazing. Brilliant. Ali Brown scored a superb triple hundred to take us to a huge score of 691. He batted so well and hit 38 boundaries, and not only was that huge, but a record 298 eighth wicket stand between he and Martin Bicknell was also outstanding. Martin Bicknell gave support to Brown, and got the reward of making his highest first class score of 120, and was unbeaten. A downside to the day was an unusual hat trick at the end of the innings, involving Brown, Mushtaq and Ormond. We didn’t manage a wicket at stumps.
Day 3: Surrey v Somerset, County Championship - SURREY 691 lead SOMERSET 337/9 (M Wood 74, M Lathwell 63, M Burns 52, M Robinson 4/102, S Mushtaq 3/102) by 354 runs.
Disappointing as we might not be able to win this match, but they will have to follow on unless there is a miracle. Good partnerships have kept them in this game and might fight for the draw, but our spinners, expensive, but were very good. Youngster Michael Robinson got 4 wickets, and is playing with great enthusiasm. Saqlain was quiet, but managed 3 wickets. Martin Bicknell failed with the ball after a long day yesterday, but will be fresh and ready to go tomorrow.
Day 4: Surrey v Somerset, County Championship - SURREY 691 beat SOMERSET 339 (M Wood 74, M Lathwell 63, M Burns 52, M Robinson 5/104) & 138 (P Bowler 37, M Robinson 5/37, S Mushtaq 3/39) by an innings & 214 runs.
Our first innings defeat will keep us at the top of the table. It was all about Michael Robinson today, he knocked Caddick off on the fourth ball of the day to force them to bat again in no time. He then helped Surrey knocking them over for 138, taking best figures of 5/37 and taking his total to 10 in the match, only his second first-class match. Martin Bicknell took two early wickets before letting the spin take over. Mushtaq took another 3 wickets.
Surrey’s score of 691 is the seventh highest score by Surrey in a First-Class innings.
Ali Brown’s score of 338 is the equal second highest score by an individual in a First-Class match for Surrey.
Ali Brown and Martin Bicknell’s 298 run 8th wicket partnership is the highest by Surrey in First-Class matches.

28 MAY 2002
Second Test - England Squad announced - they are: Nasser Hussain (capt), Michael Vaughan, Mark Butcher, Graham Thorpe, Graham Hick, Mark Ramprakash, Alec Stewart, Darren Gough, Andy Caddick, Allan Mullally, Paul Hutchison, Matthew Hoggard.
Surrey name a 12 man-squad for the C&G Trophy third round against Cumberland at Bristol - they are : Adam Hollioake (capt), John Ratcliffe, Ben Scott, Scott Newman, Ali Brown, Nadeem Shahid, Graham Thorpe, Ian Ward, Martin Bicknell, James Ormond, Saqlain Mushtaq and Michael Robinson.

29 MAY 2002
Cumberland v Surrey, C&G Trophy, third round - SURREY 379/6 (A Hollioake 108*, A Brown 89, J Ratcliffe 67, M Carberry 45) beat CUMBERLAND 100 (P Bryne 21, S Mushtaq 5/34, M Bicknell 5/54) by 279 runs.
We made two record’s today, The largest score and the largest victory. I guess these matches are always the easiest, and it always gives us a chance to see the other players play well. That happened today, as Michael Carberry came in and knocked the ball around to score 45, while Ratcliffe returned back and made 67. Ali Brown continued his awesome form by making 89 while Adam Hollioake made 108 not out of 70 odd balls. Saqlain and Martin Bicknell each took another 5 wicket haul for the season.
Surrey’s score of 379/6 is the highest score by Surrey in a List-A match
Surrey’s victory of 279 runs is the largest victory by Surrey in a List-A Match.

30 MAY 2002
Surrey name a 12 man-squad for the County Championship match against Lancashire at Old Trafford - they are : Adam Hollioake (capt), John Ratcliffe, Ben Scott, Scott Newman, Ali Brown, Nadeem Shahid, Michael Carberry, Ian Ward, Martin Bicknell, James Ormond, Saqlain Mushtaq and Michael Robinson.

31 MAY - 2 JUNE 2002
Day 1: Lancashire v Surrey, County Championship - LANCASHIRE 267 (G Lloyd 50, A Flintoff 41, M Bicknell 3/60) lead SURREY 5/0 by 262 runs.
A fairly good start, but there could be bad news on our number one strike bowler Martin Bicknell. He has had a great start to the season, and had bowled well before pulling up sore, and went off the ground late in the day. We only faced one over today, and Carberry look in good nick, hitting a great boundary. Hopefully the pitch can play well for our, below par, side.
Day 2: Lancashire v Surrey, County Championship - LANCASHIRE 267 trail SURREY 333/6 (A Hollioake 103*, S Newman 83, M Carberry 55) by 66 runs.
We took the lead, and that was helped by young guns Michael Carberry and Scott Newman, but Adam Hollioake made a fantastic century, his second consecutive century and is once again not out. It was a quick one, to end the day with his side in front. Martin Bicknell is confirmed to be out for a month, which is a big blow to the pace attack.
Day 3: Lancashire v Surrey, County Championship - LANCASHIRE 267 & 216/6 (S Law 87, G Lloyd 59) lead SURREY 415 (A Hollioake 124, S Newman 83, M Carberry 55) by 68 runs.
We still managed 80 odd runs today with Adam Hollioake adding his score to 124. Martin Bicknell was missed in the batting position, but the side still managed a score that can help them win outright. Bowling was tough, but we did very well. Hollioake and Ormond opened the bowling and bowled fluently, but it was the spinners who struggled on a pace surface. Robinson was unlucky, but managed to get both Law and Lloyd out.
Day 4: Lancashire v Surrey, County Championship - LANCASHIRE 267 & 269 (S Law 87, G Lloyd 59, S Mushtaq 4/67) lost to SURREY 415 & 122/3 (Sam Newman 79*, Adam Hollioake 31*, M Smethurst 3/28) by 7 wickets.
Another great win, but with a hiccup. Michael Carberry and then a first ball duck to last weeks hero Ali Brown following the wicket of Ratcliffe, put us in tatters. After the bad start at 13/3, we were well helped to victory by the young and in-form Scott Newman, who added an unbeaten 79 to his first innings score of 83, only in his second first-class match. With Scott only coming in for Mark Ramprakash, it is going to be hard to see where he finishes off the season.
Martin Bicknell suffered a knee injury in the field during the County Championship match against Lancashire. He will spend the next month on the sidelines.

3 JUNE 2002
Surrey name a 12 man-squad for the National League match against Northamptonshire at Northampton - they are : Adam Hollioake (capt), Mark Ramprakash, Alec Stewart, Scott Newman, Ali Brown, Mark Butcher, Graham Thorpe, Ian Ward, Eddie Giddins, James Ormond, Saqlain Mushtaq and Michael Robinson.

4 JUNE 2002
Northamptonshire v Surrey, National League - SURREY 200/8 (M Ramprakash 64, G Thorpe 41, K Innes 3/28) lost to NORTHAMPTONSHIRE 204/4 (M Hussey 72, G Brophy 46*, G Swann 35*) by 6 wickets.
Our first loss of the season in any competition, and it comes as a relief at the same time. It showed how much we missed Martin Bicknell whilst bowling. Northamptonshire tied us down right from the start. We scored at a slow rate and were losing wickets when frustrated. Ali Brown once again performed poorly after his big innings a couple of matches ago. Ramprakash was good, and held the innings together. Our bowling was a problem, Michael Robinson and James Ormond bowled okay but it wasn’t enough.

5 JUNE 2002
Surrey name a 12 man-squad for the Super Cup Semi-Final against Leicestershire at The Oval - they are : Adam Hollioake (capt), Mark Ramprakash, Alec Stewart, Scott Newman, Ali Brown, Mark Butcher, Graham Thorpe, Ian Ward, Alex Tudor, James Ormond, Saqlain Mushtaq and Michael Robinson.

6 JUNE 2002
Surrey v Leicestershire, Super Cup Semi-Final - SURREY 375/8 (M Butcher 110, A Stewart 82, M Robinson 71) beat LEICESTERSHIRE 158 (M Bevan 64, N Burns 49, S Mushtaq 5/48, J Ormond 4/34) by 217 runs.
A big win has led us to the Super Cup final. The game was on from the first over. After a disappointing last few weeks at the top of the order, Stewart and Butcher joined up there, just like the start of the season, and made up for it. A 179 opening partnership of off only 20 overs, at a run rate 8.9 an over. Mark Butcher made his first hundred in the one-day season and made it at a brilliant strike. Stewart’s 82 was well needed also, but the main talk of the batting was the youngster everyone is beginning to hear about. Michael Robinson made a career best 71, either with the ball or bat, he has been the draftee of the domestic season and he has made runs down the order and taken wickets. Saqlain Mushtaq and James Ormond each bowled very well to take 5 and 4 wickets respectively.
Surrey’s score of 375/8 is the equal second highest score by Surrey in a List-A match

12-15 JUNE 2002
Day 1: Surrey v Kent, County Championship - SURREY 330 (J Batty 100, S Newman 96, M Robinson 36) lead KENT by 330 runs.
Another helpful hand after a bad start helped us bat right throughout the day to the last ball. Our top order, once again, collapsed but it was a saving Middle Order partnership that made the day work out. John Batty made his first first-class for quite some time, and with Alec Stewart playing most games, this was John’s first Championship match of the season. His form in the seconds has been very good, scoring 3 centuries in his last 4 innings and he continued that form. The man at the other end, Scott Newman has made a successful start to his career by producing 96, after scoring 83 & 79* in his last match.
Day 2: Surrey v Kent, County Championship - SURREY 330 lead KENT 324/9 (R Key 124*, M Ealham 60, D Fulton 54, S Mushtaq 5/75) by 6 runs.
We were pretty disappointed with ourselves today as we couldn’t stamp our spot on this match. A superb unbeaten hundred by Robert Key has put them in a good position to stop our run in this competition. He was helped by useful lower-order batsman Mark Ealham and David Fulton provided a good fifty to also mark Kent’s name on this match. Saqlain bowled very well once again, taking another five wickets and has a chance for another tomorrow morning. Michael Robinson was outstanding, but very unlucky. He bowled well, but had 3 catches dropped and got a wicket off a no-ball.
Day 3: Surrey v Kent, County Championship - SURREY 330 & 283/8 (J Batty 87, S Newman 76, A Hollioake 52) lead KENT 352 (R Key 150, M Ealham 60, D Fulton 54, S Mushtaq 6/84) by 261 runs.
Robert Key added plenty of runs which made us unhappy to put them in the lead. Saqlain got his sixth wicket but had no support without Bicknell in the side. Once again our top order - Butcher, Ratcliffe, Brown and Ward made less than 25 between them, but John Batty and Scott Newman had another big stand, both falling short of there first innings scores but got us out of jail. Skipper Adam Hollioake made a strong 50 which supplied us with something we can manufacture a win from. We need to bat another 10 overs tomorrow morning and bat aggressively, or go all out, and our bowlers need to use the 4th day pitch to advantage.
Day 4: Surrey v Kent, County Championship - SURREY 330 & 371/9 dec. (J Batty 87, S Newman 76, A Tudor 52*, A Hollioake 52, S Mushtaq 39) beat KENT 352 & 86 (M Walker 22*, S Mushtaq 6/17) by 263 runs.
Who would of thought that a victory would come along like this. We added almost 100 runs in 10 overs with Tudor and Mushtaq making them, and Ormond adding his delicate shots to the boundary. Tudor bought up his 50 and then we declared. His first over was a ripper also, where he smacked David Fulton on the helmet, causing him to retire hurt. But after that, it was the Saqlain Mushtaq show. Saqlain bowled out Kent for 86 with his own arm, gathering 6/17 after taking 6 in the first innings. But after that performance, he wasn’t named man of the match, after second keeper to Alec Stewart, John Batty won the award.

16 JUNE 2002
Hampshire v Surrey, National League - SURREY 248 (A Hollioake 70, J Ratcliffe 69) beat HAMPSHIRE 134 (J Cook 27, J Ormond 4/21, S Mushtaq 4/29) by 114 runs.
We got to look at reasons why our two main players in the side are performing well below what they were at the start of the year. Mark Butcher was selected in the first two test matches, but didn’t play both and he has not performed to his capabilities as he is the experienced player in the side when Stewart, Thorpe and Ramprakash are outed. Ali Brown scored a brilliant 338 not so long ago and does make big hundreds, and has had a good season up till now. He has scored 28 runs in 7 innings since that big triple-hundred, and only 14 in the last 6 innings. We were going at a slow rate, and weren’t scoring much either and were losing wickets, but Adam Hollioake joined John Ratcliffe and both made 70 runs. The final score of 248 was a very good one, when looking back. James Ormond was fantastic whilst bowling and off his 9 he got 4/21 while Saqlain bowled as good as he has this season.

Ali Brown has asked to be rested after struggling with form.

19 MAY 2002
Hampshire v Surrey, C&G Trophy, fourth round - HAMPSHIRE 176/9 (R Smith 40, D Kenway 34, M Robinson 3/21, J Ormond 3/34) lost to SURREY 178/7 (M Ramprakash 52*, A Tudor 30*, S Udal 3/35) by 3 wickets.
A very tough pitch to play on, because it was the same pitch we used in the National League game, which was very, very unusual and the scores show that. Hampshire scored at 3 and a half an over, and the start from James Ormond was needed, and Michael Robinson bowled the best he has since he took 10 wickets in the county match. Batting was tougher than tough, but we ended up making the score, and that was helped by our great player Mark Ramprakash who made a much needed 50 for the side. Alex Tudor made a quick 30 not out to get the winning runs.

22 JUNE 2002
Surrey v Northamptonshire, Super Cup Final - SURREY 240 (G Thorpe 56, M Butcher 35, R Anderson 3/51) beat NORTHAMPTONSHIRE 195 (R Warren 63*, A Rollins 40, M Robinson 5/46) by 45 runs.
We done it, we won the Super Cup and will remain the reigning champions again. It all started as Mark Butcher hit a four off the first ball. We scored only 240, but it was a defendable score. In the field we started off sloppy as it was a bit damp, still after our innings and a shower in-between the change of innings. Graham Thorpe took control with his half-century while Mark Butcher, Mark Ramprakash and Michael Robinson got solid runs to contribute. James Ormond got a couple early wickets to help us off to a start, but a partnership in the middle of the order between Warren and Rollins put us in a spot of bother. Saqlain had bowled out so Hollioake turned to Robinson who had a good last match after a dropping form in the bowling department. Robinson bowled the best I have seen him bowl with a white ball. He took each ball by ball well, even when he couldn’t break the partnership early, but when he got through, he just kept going and going and ended up with 5/46.
Surrey win the Super Cup

24 JUNE 2002
Surrey v Sussex, National League - SUSSEX 246/2 (R Montgomerie 116, M Goodwin 90) lost to SURREY 247/6 (M Butcher 74, A Hollioake 45*, M Ramprakash 45)
We didn’t bowl at our best, as we just played a standard game, but used all 5 bowlers. But that doesn’t matter because we came away with the points. Montgomerie stroked through the off side on almost every occasion, as the outfield was quick it raced to the boundary and was well supported with Murray Goodwin in there double-century opening stand. Chasing a pretty good score we managed to get it after a few wickets, but as per usual, Adam Hollioake guided the side with his experience and resilience and was helped by the very quick score of opener Mark Butcher as he made 74.

30 JUNE 2002
Lancashire v Surrey, National League - SURREY 228/8 (M Ramprakash 126, M Smethurst 3/37) beat LANCASHIRE 181 (S Law 55, C Schofield 38, S Mushtaq 3/19) by 47 runs.
We didn’t make a lot of runs, and between our whole side we 7 of our batsman scored under twenty runs. Michael Robinson made our second largest score, of 26. But it was Mark Ramprakash that made our score defendable. He made a brilliant hundred and kept going and going, unfortunately a not out ended up off the cards as he was dismissed on the last ball of the innings. Lancashire once again got a start, using the pace of the out of form Alex Tudor, but Saqlain Mushtaq held them down and got rid of Stuart Law which was there only hope. Mark Butcher got two wickets in his 5 balls to finish off the match.

Surrey name a 12 man-squad for the County Championship match against Somerset at Taunton - they are : Mark Ramprakash (capt), Michael Carberry, Jonathan Batty, Scott Newman, Ali Brown, Mark Butcher, Ian Ward, John Ratcliffe, Timothy Murtagh, James Ormond, Saqlain Mushtaq and Michael Robinson.

3-6 JULY 2002
Day 1: Somerset v Surrey, County Championship - SOMERSET 343/6 (M Trescothick 108, M Lathwell 68, M Robinson 3/93) lead SURREY BY 343 runs.
Somerset won the toss and had no hesitation to bat on a strip that looked golden. We bought in Timothy Murtagh and he opened the bowling but had no impact at all, and James Ormond didn’t bowl as good as he could. We left both spinners in, and Robinson ended up taking 3 wickets with Saqlain Mushtaq getting two but were both expensive for not much in return. Marcus Trescothick gave the selectors that extra touch after he was left out of the Natwest series and he pulled off a magnificent hundred. If we can get them out before lunch we could make 300 on a pitch that will favour our top order.
Day 2: Somerset v Surrey, County Championship - SOMERSET 392 (M Trescothick 108, M Lathwell 68, M Burns 51, S Mushtaq 5/113, M Robinson 4/118) lead SURREY 341/4 (I Ward 113*, J Batty 60*, M Ramprakash 54, S Newman 54) by 51 runs.
A brilliant day for us, we got the tail despite an early partnership in the lower-order but Saqlain finished them off, and got another 5 wicket haul. We aimed to make 300, which would have averaged out about 120 in the second and third sessions as we had about 15 overs before lunch, but we got more runs than we wanted, and there is a big chance we can win this game still. We are only 4 wickets down, but 1 man down. Mark Butcher got one on the elbow, just the second ball of the innings, and we found out he has fractured the elbow and is expected to be out till mid-August. Ian Ward came back in the side after an inconsistent start to the season and has been in and out of the side, but he remains on 113 and with John Batty in the side, and continues to perform, we might need to keep both him and Alec Stewart playing later on in the year. Scott Newman provided yet another 50 in his debut first-class season.
Day 3: Somerset v Surrey, County Championship - SOMERSET 392 & 183/7 (M Wood 53, S Mushtaq 5/80) lead SURREY 498 (J Batty 146, I Ward 143, M Ramprakash 54, S Newman 54, A Caddick 4/120) by 77 runs.
John Batty supplied us with a superb display of batting. His partner Ian Ward, went on to 143, and Robinson went out for only 4 exposed the tail quickly, so John Batty kept strike and made runs as quick as he could, and ended up with a career high 146. We have stamped our spot on this match, and hopefully can come away with an outright victory as we have them at 183/7, with a lead of only 77. Saqlain Mushtaq got 5 more wickets for the match to take another 10 wicket haul in a match this season.
Day 4: Somerset v Surrey, County Championship - SOMERSET 392 & 198 (M Wood 53, S Mushtaq 7/88, M Robinson 3/57) lost to SURREY 498 & 94/0 (M Ramprakash 54*, J Ratcliffe 33*) by 10 wickets.
Simple as that, if you try hard, you will win and never give up. We got beaten on day 1 by a country mile, but with our spinners charging in every ball bowling there best, it really proved that they were our match winners on one account. Saqlain took 7 wickets, following his 5 in the first innings. Michael Robinson also bowled well to take 3 wickets in the second innings. We needed 94 to win and did it in style, losing no wicket, and John Ratcliffe putting pressure on the selectors. Mark Ramprakash continued his great season with the club, making another 50, his second in the match. Once again John Batty was robbed of the man of the match award, but Saqlain Mushtaq was a worthy winner.
Mark Butcher is out for the next 4 weeks with a fractured elbow, suffered in the first innings of the County match at Taunton.
Martin Bicknell has passed a fitness test and has fully recovered from a knee injury.

Surrey name a 12 man-squad for the National League match against Middlesex at Lord’s - they are : Mark Ramprakash (capt), Michael Carberry, Jonathan Batty, Scott Newman, Ali Brown, Nadeem Shahid, Ian Ward, John Ratcliffe, Martin Bicknell, James Ormond, Saqlain Mushtaq and Michael Robinson.

7 JUNE 2002
Middlesex v Surrey, National League - MIDDLESEX 178/5 (E Joyce 56*, B Hutton 46) lost to SURREY 179/4 (M Ramprakash 69, J Ratcliffe 61) by 6 wickets.
Another win means we are a chance to take the other one-day competition, the National League. But it came at a big hiccup, as we sailed along nicely, not worrying about the run rate, until we realised we needed 10 off the last two overs, we got 8 in the second last but we lost a wicket of Scott Newman, and then the first ball of the next over, Mark Ramprakash went, leaving two new batsmen to require 2 runs off 5 balls. We did it with just one ball in hand. Ramprakash made yet again, another 50 and was well supported by good mate John Ratcliffe who keeps selection. Michael Carberry though didn’t have success. We didn’t get many wickets when bowling, but we bowled tight which is the idea in one-day cricket.

9 JULY 2002
Surrey name a 12 man-squad for the County Championship match against Warwickshire at The Oval - they are : Mark Ramprakash (capt), Michael Carberry, Jonathan Batty, Scott Newman, Ali Brown, Ian Ward, John Ratcliffe, Martin Bicknell, James Ormond, Ian Salisbury, Saqlain Mushtaq and Michael Robinson.

10-13 JULY 2002
Day 1: Surrey v Warwickshire, County Championship - SURREY 340 (A Brown 96, I Ward 96, M Carberry 63, S Pollock 4/56) lead WARWICKSHIRE 17/0 by 323 runs.
A good start by us today, besides the two in-form batsman John Batty and Mark Ramprakash failing to score much runs, but with that, Ali Brown made his first score since his 338 in the County match on the 23rd of May. Ian Ward followed up his 143 with 96 also, just four short of consecutive first-class hundreds. Michael Carberry showed his form along with his potential. He has replaced Mark Butcher as the opener, as Alec Stewart and Graham Thorpe are on International Duty. We would like to bowl Warwickshire out for under 300, but they are a strong batting side. We do have a full attack in, as we have given Michael Robinson a well deserved rest, and have introduced experienced spin bowler Ian Salisbury his first go in the ones this season. His form has been good of late, but struggled at the start of the year in the seconds.
Day 2: Surrey v Warwickshire, County Championship - SURREY 340 lead WARWICKSHIRE 153 (I Bell 23, S Mushtaq 4/60, I Salisbury 3/36) & 176/4 (I Bell 74)
We bowled much better than I thought we could today. Warwickshire have a pretty good batting line-up and we bowled at it very well. Saqlain took 4 wickets, just short of another five, Martin Bicknell also bowled who is playing his first, first-class match since being injured. Ian Salisbury took 3 wickets and bowled well, but not his best. Warwickshire batted much better in there second innings, including a big 74 form Ian Bell, but we are in a strong position to win the match, only needing six wickets and then make the runs, before stumps tomorrow.
Day 3: Surrey v Warwickshire, County Championship - SURREY 340 & 51/2 beat WARWICKSHIRE 153 & 237 (I Bell 74, M Wagh 30, S Mushtaq 5/27) by 8 wickets.
Another win and we have pretty much secured the Championship this season. It was another great bowling performance by Saqlain Mushtaq, and he was robbed as Scott Newman took the last wicket, leaving Saqlain stranded with 9 for the match. Martin Bicknell pulled up a bit sore, but he didn’t lose too much form as he bowled pretty good. We remain top of the Championship table.

Surrey name a 12 man-squad for the C&G Trophy quarter-final Worcestershire at Worcester - they are : Adam Hollioake (capt), Mark Ramprakash, Alec Stewart, Scott Newman, Ali Brown, Ian Ward, Graham Thorpe, John Ratcliffe, James Ormond, Martin Bicknell, Saqlain Mushtaq and Michael Robinson.

17 JULY 2002
Worcestershire v Surrey, C&G Trophy quarter-final - SURREY 263/8 (I Ward 79, M Ramprakash 63) beat WORCESTERSHIRE 222 (G Hick 62, P Pollard 59, M Robinson 4/48, S Mushtaq 3/45) by 41 runs.
We don’t play Worcestershire in the County matches, or the other two one-day competitions, so it was good to play against them in this Knockout quarter-final. We opened with Ian Ward, who is in form as Mark Butcher is out with injury, and Ian managed a well crafted 79. Mark Ramprakash also chipped in with another fifty, this time he got 69 runs. Our spinners once again did the damage, this time there wasn’t really any help for them but they managed 7 of the wickets. Man of the match Michael Robinson came back in the side after being rested in the last Championship match, and he came back with 4/48. Saqlain completed another fine game with 3/45 off his ten overs.

18 JULY 2002

Michael Robinson will miss the next 3 weeks after injuring his knee at training.

19-22 JULY 2002
Day 1: Kent v Surrey, County Championship - SURREY 319 (S Newman 97, A Hollioake 86, M Saggers 5/62) lead KENT 26/1 by 293 runs.
A very good score on a pitch that is below standards. We won the toss and decided to bat first just for that reason, batting on it in day 4 will be hopeless. At one stage we were 12/4, with Brown, Ramprakash, Batty and Ward all out. Batty and Ward opened, and in form is the reason why, but they managed no runs each, and went out in the first two overs of the match. Scott Newman managed another fifty, but still hasn’t reached that hundred. Newman has scored 6 50’s in 8 innings, in a debut season, a very good record. Adam Hollioake had saved the innings once again today. Kent fast bowler Martin Saggers destroyed us with 5 wickets. Kent remain one out overnight, but hopefully Saqlain and Salisbury can hold them to under 300 or even 200.
Day 2: Kent v Surrey, County Championship - SURREY 319 & 113/0 (I Ward 59*, J Batty 41*) lead KENT 229 (P Nixon 93, D Fulton 79, I Salisbury 6/65) by 203 runs.
We didn’t manage to get a breakthrough until halfway through the second session, thanks to Ian Salisbury. Salisbury came back into the side for Michael Robinson, and is playing his second game of the season. He got the breakthrough and then put on a collapse, ending up with figures of 6/65. Nixon and Fulton put on over 150 before Nixon went, and then Fulton got hit by a James Ormond bouncer and had to retire hurt. We headed into stumps with a much better start. John Batty and Ian Ward played like they have in the last month and have got an unbeaten hundred opening stand. We will look for a 400 lead before declaring.
Day 3: Kent v Surrey, County Championship - SURREY 319 & 340/9 dec. (I Ward 65, A Hollioake 65, J Batty 44) lead KENT 229 & 101/3 (R Key 54*) by 330 runs.
Just over 300 are needed on the last day, it can be done, but I doubt it will happen. They are 3 wickets down, but Robert Key is there big chance to guide them to success. David Fulton won’t bat, so that is one less batsman down. We made runs today, with Hollioake playing another great innings, mastering 65, while Ian Ward and John Batty didn’t continue on there roll from last night. James Ormond and Martin Bicknell made a handy 10th wicket partnership which ended up undefeated.
Day 4: Kent v Surrey, County Championship - SURREY 319 & 340/9 dec. beat KENT 229 & 171 (R Key 60, S Mushtaq 3/51) by 259 runs.
Adam Hollioake bowled a treat after a magnificent batting display in both innings. Hollioake ended with 2/21 and set up the win in a short amount of time. Saqlain was the best bowler in the wicket department once again, this time getting 3 wickets. We remain clear leaders on the Championship table and are heading for a magnificent competition victory. We are yet to lose a match, and have drawn only once, which was against Yorkshire early on this season.

24-27 JULY 2002
Day 1: Surrey v Yorkshire, County Championship - SURREY 181 (I Salisbury 59, M Carberry 36, R Dawson 4/55) lead YORKSHIRE 155/8 (R Stead 41*, S Mushtaq 5/55) by 26 runs.
A bad wicket, let us only manage 181, but at one stage we were struggling for a score of 120. The tail was exposed, but Ian Salisbury combined with Michael Carberry to help the score along to 181, still pretty poor. Ian Salisbury made 59, and has become a valuable player since Robinson has been forced to the sidelines. We bowled tidy to Yorkshire, and that held them down to 155, and 8 wickets down. Saqlain Mushtaq once again starred with another 5 wickets. Roger Stead though has kept his wicket and could still help them into a lead.
Day 2: Surrey v Yorkshire, County Championship - SURREY 181 & 242/5 (S Newman 62*, A Brown 49, M Carberry 38*) lead YORKSHIRE 192 (R Stead 55, S Mushtaq 6/66) by 231 runs.
A good end to the day has once again put us in a position to win a match outright. The pitch is not getting any better, as we saw our players in the top-order fail to score big, but Ali Brown came away with 49 playing on-side shots rather than off-side shots, which lead him to that score. Roger Stead made a fifty before going out, but his fifty runs, mainly came on the onside also. Scott Newman, the inform youngster played a magnificent innings late, making 62 not out overnight. Michael Carberry also is not out, and looking good.
Day 3: Surrey v Yorkshire, County Championship - SURREY 181 & 400 (S Newman 71, S Mushtaq 62*, M Bicknell 52, A Brown 49, M Carberry 45, G Hamilton 4/88) lead YORKSHIRE 192 & 106/0 (M Wood 54*, A McGrath 50*) by 289 runs.
A very good batting performance, to make 400 runs is just amazing, on a bad batting strip on the third day. Scott Newman and Michael Carberry though weren’t the executors, it was the strike bowlers of Saqlain Mushtaq and Martin Bicknell. Saqlain made 62 not out, and batted all over the wicket while Bicknell made a 50, just where he left off when he was sidelined. One problem though was letting the Yorkshire openers Ashley McGrath and Matthew Wood get to 100 and stay undefeated overnight.
Day 4: Surrey v Yorkshire, County Championship - SURREY 181 & 400 beat YORKSHIRE 192 & 249 (M Wood 102, A McGrath 50, S Mushtaq 4/75) by 140 runs.
A brilliant victory as we got the 10 wickets we needed in just over 2 hours. Matthew Wood got to his century, but nothing more from Ashley McGrath or the rest of the side on the day saw us to victory. Saqlain Mushtaq took 4/75, taking him to another 10 wicket match, and make him man of the match. Yorkshire drew with us at the start of the year, thanks to rain, but this time the victory was ours, against our toughest competitors.
Surrey name a 12 man-squad for the National League match against Essex at The Oval - they are : Adam Hollioake (capt), Michael Carberry, Alec Stewart, Scott Newman, Ali Brown, Mark Ramprakash, Graham Thorpe, John Ratcliffe, Ian Ward, James Ormond, Martin Bicknell, Saqlain Mushtaq and Ian Salisbury.

28 JULY 2002
Surrey v Essex, National League - ESSEX 151 (J Stephenson 36, S Mushtaq 3/19, I Salisbury 3/31) lost to SUSSEX 152/3 (A Brown 47, A Stewart 45, M Ramprakash 36*) by 7 wickets.
Not a big game, and a small crowd as it was wet, but the game went on. Essex decided to bat and made only 151, with Saqlain bowling superb on the wet pitch, taking 3/19 while Ian Salisbury took 3 also. Ali Brown and Alec Stewart set up for a quick win while Mark Ramprakash finished undefeated on 36. With this win, it keeps us at the top of the table.

31 JULY 2002
Surrey name a 12 man-squad for the C&G Trophy semi-final against Durham at Riverside - they are : Adam Hollioake (capt), Michael Carberry, Alec Stewart, Scott Newman, Ali Brown, Mark Ramprakash, Graham Thorpe, Ian Ward, James Ormond, Martin Bicknell, Saqlain Mushtaq and Ian Salisbury.

1 AUGUST 2002
Durham v Surrey, C&G Trophy semi-final - SURREY 273 (M Ramprakash 87, I Salisbury 52, J Brinkley 3/54) beat DURHAM 191 (P Collingwood 78, J Daley 52, J Ormond 5/46) by 82 runs.
Another win, and we are through to the C&G Trophy final. We set our goal at the start of the season to win this competition and we have a 50-50 chance now. Mark Ramprakash set it up with a stroke making 87 and the new look Ian Salisbury managed another 50 to help us to a big score. Durham were tough with Paul Collingwood and John Daley making fifties, but James Ormond made sure they weren’t to get in our way, with him removing 5, getting figures of 5/46, and being rewarded Man of the Match.

Surrey v Northamptonshire, The Oval - NORTHAMPTONSHIRE 175/6 (M Loye 41) lost to SURREY 177/4 (M Ramprakash 56, A Stewart 53, A Hollioake 31) by 6 wickets.
Another easy victory for us, so we weren’t really jumping for joy out there. Once again we held down our opponents when bowling, restricting them to only 175 runs. When batting we did it quite comfortably in the end. Mark Ramprakash hit another fifty to go with his others, while Alec Stewart made 53, but the excitement came from skipper Adam Hollioake - where he made 31 off only 13 balls, going out caught on the boundary. We retain the top spot of the div 2 table, and hopefully can get back into the div 1 next season.

Surrey v Middlesex, National League - SURREY 315/5 (M Butcher 151, J Ratcliffe 61, A Brown 57) beat MIDDLESEX 225 (D Nash 54, E Joyce 52, S Mushtaq 4/56) by 90 runs.
A good win and we finally scored pretty well, after what was a form slump in the middle order. Mark Butcher was the certain highlight, returning after a fractured elbow, and was outed for a month, and he managed a huge score of 151. He had been inconsistent at the start of the season and this score kept him at the club some might say, and in the ECB selectors eyes. John Ratcliffe continues to perform when chosen and Ali Brown made a well needed fifty. Mushtaq bowled as good as he has, but he was hit to the boundary on several occasions.

7 AUGUST 2002
Sussex v Surrey, National League - SURREY 244/5 (A Brown 93*, S Newman 41*, M Butcher 36, R Kirtley 3/46) beat SUSSEX 127 (C Adams 84*, S Mushtaq 5/28) by 117 runs.
This game was one of our best victories of the season, and that was through players returning to form. Mark Butcher, despite only 36 runs, put on an early onslaught, making those runs off only 33 balls. Ali Brown has had the most inconsistent season you can imagine. He played very well today, using a new game plan of stroking the ball rather than watching it. He got early runs without any worries and moved to fifty. He then lifted the tempo at the end to remain not out on 93. It was his highest score of the season in the short form. Scott Newman also supplied help in the final overs. Martin Bicknell struck on his second ball, and was economical. His first spell was great, and Saqlain replaced him and produced the highlight. Saqlain got 5/28 to force Sussex to a dull 127, and we won another League match and continue our way to the top.

8-11 AUGUST 2002
Day 1: Sussex v Surrey, County Championship - SURREY 368/6 (I Ward 93, A Brown 89, A Hollioake 47, R Kirtley 3/86) lead SUSSEX BY 368 runs.
A brilliant display and team performance today. We managed a very good 368 and only 6 down in what we can call a long tail. Rain is expected so we are planning a big day tomorrow, looking for runs in the first session and bowl into the second innings. It might sound a bit selfish and ambitious but we know we can do it. Ali Brown batted well, but fell short of his hundred, but the most disappointed man was Ian Ward. Ward has broken into this team last month or so, and has had success, making a hundred in his first match of 2002 and has fallen short before. Hollioake made a good knock of 47.
Day 2: Sussex v Surrey, County Championship - SURREY 487 (I Ward 100, A Brown 89, J Batty 62, A Hollioake 47, R Kirtley 4/123) lead SUSSEX 207/7 (M Goodwin 85, J Carpenter 34*) by 280 runs.
A good start and finish to the day has put us in a big position to win this match. John Batty made quick runs after leading from the front last night and remained not out, and put on another 30 runs. Alex Tudor was good support as was Saqlain down the order which gave the total a boost. Sussex started well, before Alex Tudor got two breakthroughs in 8 balls, including Murray Goodwin.
Day 3: Sussex v Surrey, County Championship - SURREY 487 trail SUSSEX 241 (M Goodwin 85, J Carpenter 49, S Mushtaq 5/53) & 265/9 (W House 70*, R Montgomerie 61, P Cottey 45, S Mushtaq 4/67) by 19 runs.
Unfortunately Sussex took the lead late in the day, so we don’t want rain to settle in the morning, as we are hoping it won’t. We bowled Sussex out for 241, with Saqlain dominating, as he got the remaining 3 wickets needed overnight. A good second innings, but unable to win this match, Sussex had to follow on, and despite a great start, things went our way. William House has made a competitive 70 not out, and Richard Montgomerie once again has showed he is capable with the bat, but Saqlain and Martin Bicknell provided the wickets, with us needing only one wicket and not many runs, to win another game.
Day 4: Sussex v Surrey, County Championship - SURREY 487 & 24/1 beat SUSSEX 241 & 268 (W House 71, R Montgomerie 61, P Cottey 45, S Mushtaq 5/68) by 9 wickets.
We won and the weather had no part. Saqlain took the last wicket in his second over of the day, which meant another 5 wicket haul and another 10 wicket match. He has had a great season, from start to finish, and with a couple more to play, he is in control in the bowling department. Needing 23 to win, Mark Butcher got out in the first over, and was disappointed. Michael Carberry got us to victory after 7 overs.

14-17 AUGUST 2002
Day 1: Leicestershire v Surrey, County Championship - LEICESTERSHIRE 180 (T Ward 52, A Hollioake 3/20, S Mushtaq 3/48) lead SURREY 70/3 (A Stewart 33*, P DeFreitas 2/18) by 110 runs.
On a batting pitch, we lost the toss, but a light sprinkle of rain turned it into bowlers paradise. We bowled Leicestershire out for 180, and Tony Ward was the only threatening batsman. Adam Hollioake and Martin Bicknell were economical and took wickets, while Saqlain helped himself to three more wickets. Michael Robinson returned and only got 1 wicket, and was expensive of his 16 overs. Alec Stewart steadied the camp with an unbeaten 33 after Ian Ward, Mark Ramprakash and Graham Thorpe all had no impact. Phil DeFreitas did the damage with 2/18.
Day 2: LEICESTERSHIRE 180 & 6/0 trail SURREY 402 (A Stewart 197, A Hollioake 68, D Stevens 6/84) by 216 runs.
What a performance! Alec Stewart, nearing his final match for Surrey, made a sensational hundred, and carried on to 197. The great wicketkeeper for this great team made every run count, and the crowd and players loved every minute of it, whoever you were barracking for, because it was the last time the Leicester fans would see him like this. Adam Hollioake supported him as well as he could of, and youngster Michael Robinson did the same, but the others couldn’t quite do anything to lift the team even more. 3 overs were all we could get into their second innings.
Day 3: LEICESTERSHIRE 180 & 239 (M Bevan 76, S Mushtaq 4/59) lost to SURREY 402 & 18/0 by 10 wickets.
Leicestershire batted slow, and we had the patience as we won our eleventh match this season in the Championship. Michael Bevan showed true batting skill, but couldn’t help them win with his own bat, with Martin Bicknell quickly striking him when on 76. Michael Robinson got two early wickets but couldn’t carry on, and was losing rhythm after just returning from injury. Saqlain Mushtaq did the damage with the ball, taking 4 wickets. We got the 18 runs required for victory without losing a wicket.

Surrey v Derbyshire, National League - SURREY 243/5 (M Ramprakash 55, G Thorpe 50, A Hollioake 39) lost to DERBYSHIRE 244/7 (C Bassano 89, M DiVenuto 48, A Hollioake 3/55) by 3 wickets.
Only our second loss for the competition, but we want to hold first spot in the division 2 table. We started off slow, but Ramprakash and Thorpe got us moving. They both made half centuries before Adam Hollioake got a quick 39 off only 19 balls. We didn’t bowl as well as we could, despite a 1st over wicket to Martin Bicknell. Adam Hollioake got three wickets but couldn’t save it in the last over.

21 AUGUST 2002
Surrey v Hampshire, National League - SURREY 306/5 (A Hollioake 152, A Brown 89, I Ward 35*) beat HAMPSHIRE 203 (N Pothas 79, J Laney 43, M Robinson 4/45, S Mushtaq 3/44) by 103 runs.
A great win, after what was a disappointing loss earlier this week. Our top 4 batsman were all chosen to play for England, but we have shown how much depth we have in our batting, and bowling departments. Adam Hollioake decided to open with John Ratcliffe. Ratcliffe went early but it was Adam Hollioake that won the game, along with a huge partnership with Ali Brown. Adam Hollioake scored a huge score of 152, and came at a strike of 150, as he scored it off only 102 balls. We bowled Hampshire out for 203, despite them on track in early overs, Michael Robinson took control, getting 4/45 and bowling tight. Saqlain Mushtaq continued his good form by taking 3 wickets.

22-25 AUGUST 2002
Day 1: Surrey v Hampshire, County Championship - SURREY 395/3 (I Ward 134*, A Brown 88, J Ratcliffe 85, M Carberry 47*) lead HAMPSHIRE by 395 runs.
Probably the best batting performance in a day I have seen from the side this season. Every player got a start, and the amazing part was that it was our second best side once again as the third test is still going. Hollioake went early, but century partnerships have flourished. Ratcliffe and Brown put on 91, with Ratcliffe falling short of a hundred, and then Brown and Ward did damage. A 149 partnership put them right on top, but the unexpected came as Ian Ward made another century for the year, and was helped with an unbeaten 102 partnership with Michael Carberry who is looking in great touch. We might look at batting throughout tomorrow and declaring late if we don’t go all out.
Day 2: Surrey v Hampshire, County Championship - SURREY 627 (I Ward 146, M Carberry 95, A Brown 88, J Ratcliffe 85) lead HAMPSHIRE 102/6 (N Johnson 37) by 535 runs.
Only one thing was disappointing today, Michael Carberry went out on 95. He batted so well to lose concentration and hit the ball straight back to the bowler. Ian Ward added little to his overnight score, but still managed a big hundred. John Batty and Sam Newman each got 40 runs, and the lower order wagged as Robinson, Bicknell, Saqlain and Ormond all made over 20 runs. A score of 627 with our second best side is an awesome effort. We bowled very well today also. We have them at 6/102 and every bowler did something. Adam Hollioake put finishing touches on the day, after Ormond and Bicknell took the new ball and the spinners bowled out, but Hollioake bowled the final over to take a wicket on the last ball of the day.
Day 3: Surrey v Hampshire, County Championship - SURREY 627 lead HAMPSHIRE 167 (N Pothas 44, A Hollioake 3/24, S Mushtaq 3/36) & 182/8 (J Cook 33, M Robinson 3/55)
We took 12 wickets today, to take the game. We still need 2 wickets, but if the rain holds out in the morning, we will be finished early. Adam Hollioake was superb while Mushtaq bowled tight again. They both took 3 wickets to bowl them out for 167 in their first dig. In there second dig they all got starts but never went on. Michael Robinson was great by taking 3/55 on a pitch that hasn’t offered help to the spinners at all. Saqlain was the most expensive, which is unusual.
Day 3: Surrey v Hampshire, County Championship - SURREY 627 beat HAMPSHIRE 167 & 258 (R Smith 52*, M Robinson 3/88, S Mushtaq 3/90) by an innings and 202 runs.
A huge win today, but we finished at tea. An hour rain delay wasn’t just the problem, but Robin Smith tied us down, by blocking every ball and pushing for singles to retain strike. Hampshire knew the game was getting dark, and the skipper tried to block out the whole day, and let the weather be the man at the other end. But Saqlain got both wickets, giving him 3.

27-30 AUGUST 2002
Day 1: Surrey v Warwickshire, County Championship - SURREY 323 (A Hollioake 75, M Robinson 52, A Stewart 42, A Giles 4/91) lead WARWICKSHIRE 18/0 by 305 runs.
We scored quickly on a pitch that didn’t provide batsmen much at all. A great start by Adam Hollioake with 75 off 98 balls and Alec Stewart putting on 42, but a middle order batting slump put us behind, but youngster Michael Robinson stamped his authority on the game with his maiden first-class half-century. Robinson, known as a bowler has put himself on the map as an all-rounder with a great season in both departments. Warwickshire kept all wickets in tact overnight.
Day 2: Surrey v Warwickshire, County Championship - SURREY 323 & 142/3 (A Hollioake 77*) lead WARWICKSHIRE 174 (I Bell 39, M Robinson 3/48) by 291 runs.
We certainly won the day today. Warwickshire, who have a strong batting line-up fell to only 174, with Ian Bell there top scorer with only 39. Michael Robinson did the most damage with the ball, after Saqlain was unfortunate, but very economical. Adam Hollioake took 2/16 off 7 overs and followed up with his 75 with 77 not out overnight. Hollioake once again opened the batting with Mark Butcher being rested. Hollioake made 152 in the National League match last week, whilst opening.
Day 3: Surrey v Warwickshire, County Championship - SURREY 323 & 352 (A Hollioake 92, I Ward 73, A Richardson 3/81) lead WARWICKSHIRE 174 & 120/3 (S Pollock 31*) by 382 runs.
We batted half the day to make a target score of 500 for the Warwicks to win. We got 3 wickets to take us into a big position to win the game, against what we rate the second best side in the comp. Adam Hollioake failed to get to three figures, and Ian Ward also bowed out when on target. Shaun Pollock is our main threat with the bat, but there middle order is as good as any. Weather should play no part, but the pitch has give the bowlers the advantage.
Day 4: Surrey v Warwickshire, County Championship - SURREY 323 & 352 beat WARWICKSHIRE 174 & 339 (S Pollock 91, A Giles 56, M Wagh 56, M Robinson 3/83, M Bicknell 3/87) by 162 runs.
We won this match, but it was tough. Not only did the Warwicks play defensive all day, but there defence was solid, and runs came slowly, but came. Pollock and Wagh were fantastic, with them both scoring half centuries. Shaun Pollock was the danger and he made 91, but Robinson was the one that managed to get the wicket. Ashley Giles was great down the order providing a fight with 56. We head to the championship on record pace.

Surrey name a 12 man-squad for the C&G Final against Kent at Lord’s - they are : Adam Hollioake (capt), Mark Ramprakash, Alec Stewart, Scott Newman, Ali Brown, Mark Butcher, Graham Thorpe, Ian Ward, James Ormond, Martin Bicknell, Saqlain Mushtaq and Michael Robinson.

31 AUGUST 2002
Kent v Surrey, C&G Trophy final - SURREY 332/4 (M Ramprakash 115, G Thorpe 91*, A Brown 43) beat KENT 179 (J Hockley 66, S Mushtaq 6/37) by 153 runs.
What a win, another top of class effort in a One-Day competition. Lord’s provided a super batting strip, and there was no hesitation to bat when Adam Hollioake won the toss. Ramprakash got back to form with a beautiful century. He scored 115 off 89 balls while Graham Thorpe also got into touch with an unbeaten 91. Ali Brown also chipped in with a quick 43. James Ormond was the star bowler early, but Saqlain Mushtaq turned it on once again, by taking 6/37, another great performance in one of the best performances by a bowler in the modern era.
Surrey win the C&G Trophy.

2 SEPTEMBER 2002
Derbyshire v Surrey, National League - SURREY 385/4 (A Hollioake 152, A Brown 117, A Stewart 47) beat DERBYSHIRE 148 (D Hewson 44, J Pryemont 43, S Mushtaq 5/51) by 237 runs.
We have made many records, but none so much as today in the One Day competitions. We scored the highest score ever in a list-A match for our side, and we have got 3 of the top 4 scores in our rich history this season. Adam Hollioake also made the second highest score by a Surrey batsman, not getting over 203, set by team-mate Ali Brown. Hollioake made 182 off 136 balls, after scoring 152 in a One-Day match not so long ago. Ali Brown, the record holder, also scored another One Day hundred, this time 117 off 89 balls. Alec Stewart also chipped in with 47. Saqlain Mushtaq did the damage yet again with the ball, taking 5/51, after taking 6 wickets in the C&G Trophy final earlier this week.
Surrey’s score of 385/4 is the highest score by Surrey in a List-A match.

Essex v Surrey, County Championship - ESSEX 234/5 (A Habib 102*, J Stephenson 54) beat SURREY 235/5 (S Newman 82, A Brown 62, R Irani 3/63) by 5 wickets.
Another win, this time at the expense of Surrey. Aftab Habib made a great unbeaten hundred, but it wasn’t enough as we were guided to victory by sensible aggressive batting. Scott Newman opened with Adam Hollioake and made it worth it. He was dropped last week, for no reason except other players had to come in. His 82 was quick and hit plenty of boundaries. Ali Brown continued his good form of late after he was stuck in a huge form slump. His 62 was also aggressive. Only one more match and the National League comp for division 2 is ours and we can target first place in div 1 next season.

11-14 SEPTEMBER 2002
Day 1: Hampshire v Surrey, County Championship - SURREY 380/4 (A Hollioake 96, A Brown 95, I Ward 86*, M Butcher 71) lead HAMPSHIRE by 380 runs.
Well, a brilliant batting display in the dark skies of Hampshire. We scored runs as well as we have all season, but there was two disappointing things today. Adam Hollioake and Ali Brown once again failed to make a century, and went out in the nervous nineties. Ian Ward better hope he can get to those three figures after an expertise season with the bat after breaking into the side mid year. Mark Butcher made a convincing 71 to keep his spot as Mark Ramprakash has been dropped to twelfth man after a disappointing month.
Day 2: Hampshire v Surrey, County Championship - SURREY 648 (I Ward 99, A Hollioake 96, A Brown 95, M Robinson 95, M Bicknell 80, M Butcher 71, S Mushtaq 47) lead HAMPSHIRE 7/0 by 641 runs.
We won the game today, or even yesterday. We made 648, one of the clubs highest ever scores, and what was amazing was that there was no centurions, Ian Ward who continued his awesome season with an unfortunate 99. Thanks to three players bowing out in the nervous nineties, including Michael Robinson becoming the batsmen, with 95. Martin Bicknell also chipped in with 80, as Saqlain put the pads on and made 47. We have a huge chance to take another win if we can keep on our toes tomorrow and get 10 wickets in the day. This is a certain batting wicket though.
Day 3: Hampshire v Surrey, County Championship - SURREY 648 lead HAMPSHIRE 294 (J Laney 69, D Kenway 67, S Mushtaq 4/93) & 3/0 by 351 runs.
We got the required target, restricting them to under 300 runs, and getting them all out today. It certainly hasn’t deteriorated at all this pitch. Laney and Kenway each provided Hampshire with runs, but Saqlain’s four wickets and brilliant bowling helped us to win the day. Robinson and Hollioake each provided good work with the ball. We need to do exactly what we did today, tomorrow and win another championship match.
Day 4: Hampshire v Surrey, County Championship - SURREY 648 lead HAMPSHIRE 294 & 124 (J Ormond 4/36, M Bicknell 3/34) by an innings & 230 runs.
A huge victory today, thanks to fast bowling instead of the spin of yesterday. James Ormond started and finished off with brilliant bowling. He got the first breakthrough and ended up being on a hat-trick late in the day. Martin Bicknell was also brutal. Adam Hollioake was the hardest bowler to play though. His line and length was consistent and his figures were world class - 2/12 off 10 overs. Rain occurred just after lunch, but once it blew away the game was ours indeed.

Alec Stewart has officially announced his retirement from First-Class cricket. He will play his last first-class match starting tomorrow.

18-21 SEPTEMBER 2002
Day 1: Surrey v Leicestershire, County Championship - SURREY 412/4 (M Ramprakash 215, A Brown 83, I Ward 71*) lead LEICESTERSHIRE by 412 runs.
We made over 400 runs today, and it is not unusual that we would drop an in-form player, but it ended up the right decision. Scott Newman was in great touch, but we rested him and gave Mark Ramprakash the nod to play this last Championship match of the season and he gave us something to watch. He made a sensational 215, before going out mid way through the last session, he could have gone on to 250 in the day. Ali Brown continued his good form and bad luck and Ian Ward has just been remarkable as a batsman. The way we are going, 700 might be on the cards.
Day 2: Surrey v Leicestershire, County Championship - SURREY 805 (I Ward 272, M Ramprakash 215, G Thorpe 91, A Brown 83, D Malcolm 4/188) lead LEICESTERSHIRE 21/0 by 784 runs.
Magnificent, What more could you ask in a last match for a career, and even a season. We have broke many records this year, but this one is the best. We made almost 400 runs today, and made a total of 805, the highest first-class score ever by Surrey. Ian Ward followed up with a huge double-hundred after he compiled 102 last match. Ward broke into the side and has been fantastic this season. Graham Thorpe also contributed well, just short of a century.
Day 3: Surrey v Leicestershire, County Championship - SURREY 805 lead LEICESTERSHIRE 256 (D Brandy 85*, N Burns 60, S Mushtaq 5/81) & 121/1 (R Cunliffe 52*, M Bevan 35*) by 428 runs.
After an amazing batting display, we got all of Leicestershire’s first innings wickets, and reduced them to only 256. There second innings though, has started off well, but nine wickets isn’t out of our way. Michael Bevan and Robert Cunliffe has started in great fashion, and are two very dangerous batsmen, and they can both draw this match off there own bats.
Day 4: Surrey v Leicestershire, County Championship - SURREY 805 lead LEICESTERSHIRE 256 & 256 (R Cunliffe 72, M Bevan 42, S Mushtaq 4/77) by an innings & 293 runs.
We won another match, and made it, 15 wins and 1 draw, without losing a game. Robert Cunliffe and Michael Bevan both went out early, and we won the game in the last over before tea. Saqlain Mushtaq was the wicket taker once again, taking 4/77.

Surrey’s score of 805 is the highest score by Surrey in a First-Class match.

22 SEPTEMBER 2002
Surrey v Gloucestershire, National League - SURREY 328/6 (A Hollioake 135, M Butcher 85) lost to GLOUCESTERSHIRE 330/5 (I Harvey 135*, C Spearman 89) by 5 wickets.
An amazing suspense match, but we were the losers. Adam Hollioake once again did damage with the bat, and Mark Butcher supported him, but Alec Stewart got all of the attention when he remained not out on 16. It is Alec’s last match for this team, as he has announced his retirement. Even though we lost, it was us who got the attention. Ian Harvey made us look like the small men on the field and with the ball. He scored a huge 135 not out to guide Gloucestershire to victory. New Zealander Craig Spearman also helped out, with a useful 89.
