Why do they use those bloody microphones?

I know it sounds like a stupid question, but it has annoyed me for quite a long time. Why do the commentators use those microphones that have that flat slab on top of them?

    sup dipper!

I think it's so they know the correct distance between mouth and mic!

Could be a way to cut out some of the outside noise with the microphones/flat bit and face making a seal? - However iam going with the above idea by Deeps.

If it's cutting out noise, it failed miserably yesterday - with one mike on and the windows closed, could hardly hear the commentators!
marc71178 - President and founding member of AAAS - we don't only appreciate when he does well, but also when he's not quite so good!

Anyone want to join the Society?

Beware the evils of Kit-Kats - they're immoral apparently.

Whatever the reasons, I'm sure if there was a better option they'd use them!
