I know it sounds like a stupid question, but it has annoyed me for quite a long time. Why do the commentators use those microphones that have that flat slab on top of them?

Could be a way to cut out some of the outside noise with the microphones/flat bit and face making a seal? - However iam going with the above idea by Deeps.

If it's cutting out noise, it failed miserably yesterday - with one mike on and the windows closed, could hardly hear the commentators!
