Yep im back after a few weeks of hard work. Conviniently I disappeared after NZ got thumped by Australia but there was also other reasons for my non appearance.

I'll get to the point....Taylor is not ready for international cricket. He has not made 1 substantial score against either S.L or S.A in both forms of the game. Peter Fulton in my mind has got to be the next player to step-up along with Matt Sinclair (tests only).

It's not just how you think Vettori would go as captain, but who would you replace Fleming with in the squad?

Taylor has let me down a bit on the tour of SA, and Sinclair won't really gain much from being in a BC squad if he's only there to watch Papps open with Astle.

In spite of Ashley Ross' brain fade, I'd actually lean towards rewarding Fulton.
Well their isn't much options around, it is either Jacob Oram or Dan Vettori for me.

Martin Crowe has always said Vettori will captain New Zealand one day, maybe this is his chance.

I would go with Peter Fulton, his time will come sooner rather then later IMO.

Jamie How let me down badly in South Africa. A good series would have really put the pressure on Papps, but he failed to take his opportunities.

How is still only 22, but he needs to start pushing his case or else he'll get over-taken. Let's not forget that Tim McIntosh is still in the mix somewhere & at the beginning of this year he was almost certain to be the next opener for NZ.

Bell also struggled...although that came as no surprise really.

Oram effectively ruled himself out of Captaincy earlier in the year when he said he no longer wanted the job at this stage.

So that leaves few options. I still think Vettori is the best option anyway.

How very odd, I heard Fleming on the radio a few weeks back and he said he wasn't injured at all.

Fulton and Sinclair

Fulton again showed that he is the perfect candidate for the #4 spot in the BC lineup, as he is solid when all else is falling apart. NZA missed him in the first two OD matches. Was he injured? Fulton should be in Bangladesh so he can slot in before the AUS series. Not a better time for it to happen.

Goodbye McMillan!!!

Sinclair certainly deserves a spot also; possibly at the expense of Styris.

Like everyone else I was disappointed by How and Taylor, but it may well prove a valuable learning experience in the long term. Hopefully How and McIntosh can push Papps with significant runs in the near future.

I feel happy that Fulton has developed because I have raved on about him ever since he debuted 2 years ago for Canterbury.
He's one of the best middle order options we've had in a long long time IMO.

yes, peter fulton scores some runs on an 'A' tour. Good for him. But, i remember Fleming also scoring some runs about 1992, he never had an apprenticeship the result? He could score 50 at will but couldn't convert into centuries, and new zealand sufferred as a result.

I think we leave him in domestic cricket a wee while longer, let him serve an apprenticeship at that level and then when he does come in it will be seamless.

It may sound conservative. But we tend to get to carried away with 'the next big thing in new zealand cricket'. And as a result promote to early before they have served an apprenticeship.

I agree..I don't think another season for Canterbury would do him any harm.
This season Fulton needs to make sure he converts just about every half century he makes into a century...it's so important that the youth players coming through understand how to build an innings. Its something Ross Taylor is struggling with at the moment.

Mind you...Fulton has achieved something that only 3 or 4 other NZ players can boast..a first class 300.

Just read that Papps is out of the tour with a dislocated shoulder (a fielding injury at Lincoln).

The Dom Post's Jonathan Millow wrote that there was still backing for Jamie How ahead of Fulton for the OD squad, so it'll be interesting if that'll now also be the case for the tests.

I like Millmow's journalism (he certainly seems well-connected), but his comment that Fulton "is another more at home in the four-day arena" just doesn't wash with me. Averaging 76 in last year's State Shield and scoring 98 off 102 balls this week suggests he likes the shorter format just fine, and it's crazy to penalise someone just because they can play a range of tempos.

The naming of Papps' replacement as well as the OD squad has been delayed until tomorrow, presumably so the selectors can reconvene.

I'd agree in terms of developing stamina and the ability to dominate, but technique-wise I don't think staying at provincial level helps anything. In fact, getting an overdose of slow pitches, medium-pacers and spinners who can't get anything to turn often means a batsman's bad habits become even more ingrained.

For example, I bet Ross Taylor learnt more from his failures in South Africa than the State Shield will ever teach him. If he didn't, he should've.

Injured Papps to miss tour

Michael Papps will miss New Zealand's tour of Bangladesh after dislocating his shoulder during training.
Black Caps coach John Bracewell said the batsman would be unable to play for four to six weeks and a replacement would be announced on Thursday.
Just thinking about it, this accident pretty much forces Bracewell and co. to quickly decide between the lesser of three evils -

A) Bring in Fulton or Sinclair to bat at #3, doing a backflip on their "Fleming shouldn't open" stance.

B) Shaft those two and open with How. If he scores a test hundred over there....Rodney Redmond, anyone?

C) Play McCullum as a makeshift opener solely for the BAN tour, bringing in McMillan/Fulton/Sinclair to fill out the squad.

It'll be Sinclair who tours. Although NZ should really be taking a specialist opener, not a make-shift one in Fleming or Sinclair.

I wouldn't mind seeing Jamie How have a go, he might be one of those players like Marshall who performs better with the step-up.

Sinclair replaces Papps in the Test side.

ODI side is:

Daniel Vettori (captain), Andre Adams, Nathan Astle, Ian Butler, Chris Cairns, Peter Fulton, Chris Harris, Hamish Marshall, Craig McMillan, Brendan McCullum, Kyle Mills, Mathew Sinclair and Scott Styris (one to be added).

I think it might come down to either Jamie How, Paul Wiseman or James Franklin.

What i guess i was focusing on Kent, leaving a player of fulton's ability more to getting him in the habit of scoring hundreds regularly so when he comes in he can have the impact that a young Ricky Ponting or Micheal Clarke has had.

You may also have noticed thast micheal clarke was batting at no. 6. Australia have a habit of putting young players in this position. We could learn something from this. As we tend to put players in sides with too much responsibilty.

The one to be added position will probably go to Tuffey, he has to pass a fitness test and while the test team is in Bangledesh he will be working with Sir Richard Hadlee and Ashley Ross to eradicate his bad habits ( diving technique) and doing fitness tests. If he doesn't come through the tests its is likely that Franklin will take his spot.

I just hope that Vettori getting the captaincy will give him confidence in his bowling, so that results can go in a similar fashion as when he first arrived on the scene (ie before he knocked himself out during fielding).

I am happy that Fulton gets a shot and Sinclair gets a well deserved recalled into the black caps team.

I'm not sure Fulton will actually "get a shot" as such, with Bracewell suggesting he's in line to warm to bench, just like Papps did for our last two OD comps.

It's still good for him to get some kind of confirmation that he's on the radar I suppose.

Will Scarlet

U19 Debutant
Hopefully NZ open with Astle and Sinclair, with Sinclair playing the anchor role while Astle blases.

I don't see the point of Fulton warming the bench when we are only playing BAN. Aren't we trying to get players into form for the AUS tours? Making him wait just gives leeches like McMillan further opportunities he doesn't deserve. If so McMillan will become NZ's new Parore.

Franklin should take the last spot if Tuffey pulls up. The side is a bit short on bowling, with Butler wasting a spot. How does Butler continue to warrant selection?!!! Especially in ODIs?!!! Even BAN will score at a good run rate if he plays. :@
