Is my team the worst ever?

Barney Rubble

International Coach
I play cricket for my school at 3rd XI level, due to my extreme crapness, and believe our team may be one of the worst out there.

Last season we played 8, lost 6, won 1 by 9 runs, 1 abandoned.
Season before we played 6, lost 6.
Season before we played 9, lost 8, 1 abandoned.

Not a great record, is it? I am one of only three members of our side ever to score a half-century, no-one has ever taken 5-for. Our best bowler, who once scored 51 and took 7-20 in the same game, quit the game last year. No-one ever wants to open the batting, so I get lumbered with the job. Our captain sets Test match fields for 35 over matches, and half the team don't turn up for practices.

Are we the most unprofessional and generally awful team around?

The team I was in for my first year of high school in 1999 could offer some competition...

We lost every game in the season, although we were only really disgraced once. But that one time makes up for every close game. It was the first game of the year. Rosmini College batted first and got about 120/4 in their 30 overs. We managed a brilliant 16 all out in reply :D . I was the worst batsman in the team and I got 3rd highest score with 1 run.

That was my highest score of the season too, although I equalled it a couple of times, I think I got 4 runs in the season :p . Took about 16 wickets though.

Under 13s/15s at my club over the 2002-3 season managed 0/20 with one tie...

What you need is a new captain, and to get players in the team who want to play, doesn't matter how old they are.

Nah, a team I played with for four years ago lost 11 out of 12 matches.. Including having 320 hit off us in 40 overs...

I wouldn't say your team is that bad. Last year I moved clubs from a team I'd played for for three years to a new one because I was too old for their colts team. I played in my new club's U17s team and we lost every single game we played. In our last game we conceded 305 runs from twenty overs. But we didn't give up! we recruited a couple of classy allrounders from another team and this year we got to the final of the East Devon U17s Knockout cup and finished third in the league, behind Kentisbeare and Exmouth, beating my old team (which had moved it's colts up a group) after bowling them out for 68. My batting finally came on as well and I played regularly for the IIs and open the batting in friendlies. Never give up!

The League Records page suggests that it was 311 that we took you for... I believe Richard may have been playing that day, to boot. A quick look at this season's final tables suggests that you play for Upottery... where the heck's that? It seems like Kentisbeare were a class apart.

Shame about the implosion of our U15/17 setup this season, having to rebuild from the U13s (8th this year) and U11s (2nd this year). We'll be back!

Upottery is nearer my neck of the woods.. Basically on the edge of the Blackdown hills, take the A30 towards Honiton, and its between there and Chard...

Yeah, I do play for Upottery. I had no idea there were so many people from the South West on here. I used to play for Kilmington. That final was a bit disappointing. I didn't think we were going to win, Kentisbeare were too strong but i though it would be closer than that. The problem with Upottery is that they have one batch of colts who have gone up through the age groups. We only have 12 people in our squad, two of whom are under 15 and four are complete duffers. I'm not a complete duffer- I'm about halfway between them and the best of our team.
In the game against the ECS we had a poorer team than normal out and we were competely annihilated. It was a shame because the captain and his mate, who both play for the firsts now were playing their last game for the colts.

Reality check - you can't be unprofessional if you're not professional. When you play amateur sport, you're meant to play because you enjoy the sport, you enjoy socialising and you want to have fun. But some people take it too seriously, wanting to win the league...sure I could probably understand a First XI doing that but 3rd XI...jeez...

The idea is to let everyone have a chance, no matter how poor, how bad or how good they are. You pay your subs to play cricket...and an intelligent captain (at amateur level) would realise that a happy side plays well. What way do you keep them happy? You make them all feel valued, by giving them a go...and I don't mean in dead rubbers either.
