You kinda have to have seen Brearley bat well to realise what a superb player he actually could be.
He looked so fantastic when he got it right, he was a little like Solanki, you just kept thinking "he'll get runs sometime, he must". Sadly, he never did in Test-matches. But his captaincy, plus that ever-present promise, kept him in the side for as long as it did.
